Sean Baker Wins Best Director Oscar for ‘Anora'

New York Times03-03-2025
Whoever won the prize for best director tonight was going to receive their first directing Oscar, but no nominee has labored as a filmmaker more single-mindedly for a longer time than Sean Baker. He was just announced as the winner for 'Anora.'
A Cinderella story that foregrounds hot topics like class, immigration and global capitalism through the story of a stripper who initially accepts money for sex, 'Anora' is in many ways typical of Baker's oeuvre. Like several of his past movies, including 'Tangerine' (2015) and 'The Florida Project' (2017), it blends comedy and drama, depicts sex workers sympathetically and makes copious use of nonprofessional actors.
But 'Anora' signaled Baker's mainstream recognition. Nearly a year ago, the film won the top prize, the Palme d'Or, at the Cannes Film Festival; more recently, it picked up top prizes from the directors and producers guilds. When the Oscar nominations were released earlier this year, Baker received his first nods — for picture (as one of the producers) and editing, along with directing and screenwriting — and the actress Mikey Madison, who plays the title character, also received her first nomination, for lead actress.
Baker beat out directors Jacques Audiard, for 'Emilia Pérez'; Brady Corbet, for 'The Brutalist'; Coralie Fargeat, for 'The Substance'; and James Mangold, for 'A Complete Unknown.'

Kirsten Dunst reveals son James suffered 'serious health scare' while shooting new film

Kirsten Dunst's next turn on the big screen may earn big laughs, but there was some harrowing drama off-screen. The Oscar-nominated actress, who shares two children with husband and fellow actor Jesse Plemons, revealed that her son James suffered a medical emergency while shooting her upcoming film, "The Entertainment System Is Down." The dark comedy, written and directed by Ruben Östlund, was shot in Budapest and stars Dunst, 43, alongside Keanu Reeves and Tobias Menzies. In an Aug. 20 interview with Town & Country Magazine, Dunst shared that the medical ordeal took place while Plemons, 37, and their children were staying with her in the Hungarian capital. Although Dunst and Plemons had rented a home, with plans of remaining for the film's production, things changed course when James, 4, had a "serious health scare." While the actress didn't go into details on James' medical ordeal, Dunst confirmed that "everyone is fine now." After the incident, Plemons took James and their other son, 7-year-old Ennis, back to Los Angeles while Dunst remained in Budapest. "I have never seen that movie, but I know the concept," Dunst added. "That's how it feels to be a mother at times." Dunst and Plemons welcomed their first child, son Ennis, in May 2018, followed by James in May 2021. The couple married in July 2022. The actress added that she and Plemons will soon be heading to The Bahamas for a family vacation. Why the tropical getaway? Dunst said James' request was simple: "I want to go to a beach where my sandcastle won't wash away."

Kirsten Dunst Says Son Had ‘Extremely Frightening' Health Scare in Budapest

Kirsten Dunst Says Son Had 'Extremely Frightening' Health Scare in Budapest originally appeared on Parade. Kirsten Dunst revealed she faced an 'extremely frightening' health scare involving her son while she was shooting on location in Budapest, but said 'everyone is fine now.' Dunst, 43, was filming an upcoming movie and her husband, actor Jesse Plemons, and their two sons, Ennis, 7, and James, 4, had traveled with her to live nearby throughout the duration of the shoot. Everything was going fine until James had 'a serious health scare,' and while Dunst didn't go into details about the incident, it was enough to cause Plemons and their sons to head back to Los Angeles so that extended family could help out. 'Final Destination, where you're imagining all the things that could go wrong, worst case scenarios happening to your child,' the Bring It On star said in a new interview with Town & Country published on Wednesday, August 20. 'I have never seen that movie, but I know the concept. That's how it feels to be a mother at times.' Dunst added that the nearly tragic situation brought her and Plemons, 37, 'together as a family in such a deeper way.' Now that everyone is feeling better, the Oscar nominee said that she and Plemons promised to take their sons on vacation 'anywhere James wanted to go,' and they're heading to the Bahamas soon. His one request? 'A beach where his sandcastle won't wash away.' Dunst and Plemons first met on the set of Fargo Season 2 in 2015, but they didn't start dating until the following year. In 2017, Plemons got down on one knee and popped the question, and one year later, they welcomed their first son. James arrived in May 2021, and in July 2022, the couple officially tied the knot. In March 2024, the Interview With a Vampire star opened about her relationship with Plemons and told Texas Monthly he was "one of the kindest humans [she had] ever met.' 'Immediately I felt safe, and he did too,' Dunst said, recalling how she felt when they met. 'I think that sensitivity makes him very astute when it comes to other people.' 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 Kirsten Dunst Says Son Had 'Extremely Frightening' Health Scare in Budapest first appeared on Parade on Aug 20, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Aug 20, 2025, where it first appeared. Through lean times, and there were many of those & green times. She fought like hell to give me a good life, a good education and every opportunity in the world. I wouldn't be where I am without her. I meant it when I said my Oscar 'is just as much hers as it is mine.' DeBose did say that when she won an Oscar for best supporting actress in 2022 for her role as Anita in Steven Spielberg's reboot of West Side Story. 'I'm gonna wrap this up and talk about my family. My mother, who is here tonight. Mama, I love you with my whole heart, and this is as much yours as it is mine.'
