Independence Day long weekend: Hotel occupancy, room rates set to surge
Rajesh Magow, Co-founder and Group CEO, MakeMyTrip told PTI, Independence Day has emerged as a key travel occasion over the years.
"This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend. With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday (13 August), giving early travellers a five-day window," he shared.
According to him, the top trending domestic destinations are Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Puri, Lonavala, Varanasi, Coorg, Mahabaleshwar, Ooty and Pondicherry, while the leading international destinations are Pattaya, Bali, Bangkok, Singapore, Dubai, Phuket, Colombo, Kuala Lumpur, Zurich and London.
Puneet Chhatwal, MD and CEO of Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the country's biggest hospitality firm, which owns the Taj brand, said, "The long weekend is looking very good. We have a lot of resort destinations, so we are very pleased to see all the buoyancy come back".
K B Kachru, President, Hotel Association of India (HAI) and Chairman, South Asia, Radisson Hotel Group, said this year, 15 August falls on a Friday, offering an ideal opportunity for staycations and short holidays. HAI member hotels are well-prepared to accommodate the surge, with many already witnessing a rise in advance bookings.
"Reports and trends indicate a rise in both occupancy and room rates over the long Independence Day weekend. Some properties are witnessing up to a 40 per cent surge in bookings compared to last year, with ADRs expected to be 10-15 per cent higher year-on-year," Kachru said.
Chander K Baljee, CMD at Royal Orchid Hotels Ltd (ROHL), said, "We are seeing steady interest for the extended Independence Day weekend from August 14 to 17. While the booking momentum is yet to fully pick up, we anticipate strong last-minute demand, which is quite typical for long weekends in the domestic market.
"Compared to the same period last year, we're observing an approximate increase of Rs 1,280 in rates. We expect the Average Room Rate (ARR) to close around Rs 6,450, which is a 7-8 per cent increase over last year's ARR of Rs 6,000 on the retail segment," he added.

New Delhi: In a significant Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Rs one lakh crore Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, a nationwide employment initiative aimed at transforming job opportunities for India's youth. 'There is big news for the youth of the country,' PM Modi declared from the Red Fort. 'On this day, we are starting and implementing a scheme of Rs 1 lakh crore for the youth of my country,' he said. The scheme, effective from August 15, is designed to incentivise both first-time employees and private sector employers. Under the initiative, any young person securing their first job in the private sector will receive Rs 15,000 directly from the government. 'The son or daughter who gets their first job will be given Rs 15,000 by the government,' PM Modi announced, emphasising the scheme's role in easing the transition into formal employment. To further stimulate job creation, companies that generate sustained employment will be rewarded with financial incentives. Employers hiring additional staff will be eligible for up to Rs 3,000 per month per new employee, with extended benefits for the manufacturing sector. India targeting tenfold rise in nuclear energy by 2047: PM Modi
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said India is rapidly working on 10 new nuclear reactors and has pledged to increase its nuclear energy capacity tenfold. Addressing the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort on Independence Day, he said India is taking major initiatives in the field of nuclear energy while keeping the energy needs of the future in mind. "Work is progressing rapidly on 10 new nuclear reactors and, by 2047, we have pledged to increase our nuclear energy capacity tenfold... We are bringing major reforms in the nuclear energy sector," he said. "In the field of energy, we all know that we are heavily dependent on many countries for our energy needs whether it is petrol, diesel or gas... We have to spend billions of rupees to import them. It is very important to make the country self-reliant in this regard," Modi said. The prime minister said that in the past 11 years, solar energy capacity has increased 30-fold. "We are building new dams so that hydropower can be expanded and clean energy can be made available," he said. He added that India is also investing thousands of crores of rupees in the Hydrogen Mission.
