Mara: Fatal convoy organised among students, not by us
'Based on initial investigations, the convoy was an informal initiative casually organised by the students through a WhatsApp group discussion without any official involvement from the institution or Mara,' it said.
"As an immediate measure, Mara has provided a death benefit of RM1,500 to the family of each deceased student.
Additionally, accident and death insurance claims amounting to up to RM38,000 for each student are being processed, subject to the conditions set by the insurance provider,' it said.
'At the same time, Mara will continue to work closely with the involved educational institutions and relevant agencies to ensure follow-up actions are taken responsibly, transparently, and humanely,' it said.
It issued the statement on Thursday (July 24) following the accident involving 15 students from Kolej Poly-Tech Mara (KPTM) Bangi and one student from the German-Malaysian Institute (GMI) Kajang.
In the accident at KM262 of the North-South Expressway (PLUS), three KPTM students were killed while nine other students were reported injured and three students were unharmed.
A student from GMI sustained minor injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Tuanku Ja'afar Hospital, Seremban, Negri Sembilan.
On the three students who were killed, Mara said that they are Haris Azib Sulaiman, Afkar Fitri Affendi and Aliff Syahmi Abdul Hakim,
'Haris's body was taken to Masjid Bandar Baru Salak Tinggi, Sepang for burial. The body of the late Afkar Fitri was sent to Masjid Melaka Pindah, Melaka while the body of the late Aliff was returned to the family home in Gombak, Selangor,' it added.
It said that the accident took place on Wednesday after the students gathered at petrol station in Bangi at around 11.30pm and travelled as a convoy to Uncle Red Restaurant, Seremban.
'It is understood that other students travelled from different locations such as Bangi Gateway and Seremban, to the same meeting destination.
The meeting reportedly took place at the restaurant until 2.00 a.m. before the students began their return journey towards Bangi and Kuala Lumpur,' said Mara.
It added that the accident is believed to have occurred during the return journey and added that there are two scenarios based on the testimony obtained.
'The first involves a group of students who reportedly collided with each other after one of the motorcycles allegedly lost control, resulting in a fatal accident,' said Mara.
It then said that the police have obtained closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage related to this incident, but it cannot be disclosed to the public as investigations were still ongoing.
'The second occurred shortly after, involving a lorry and a car that stopped on the same lane following the first accident.
The student involved in the second accident was believed to have attempted to overtake the heavy vehicle but failed to notice a car stopped in front of the lorry, resulting in a collision,' it added.
'Mara expresses deep sorrow over this tragedy and extends condolences to the families of the victims. We are fully committed to ensuring the welfare and needs of all involved students are given due attention, including emotional and psychosocial support for the families and fellow students,' it then said.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Three local authority officers in Terengganu have been remanded for six days for allegedly accepting bribes totalling RM25,000 in exchange for facilitating the approval process of building plans. The remand order until Saturday (Aug 2) was issued by Magistrate Yuhanis Mohd Roslan after allowing an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). A source said on Monday (July 28) that the suspects, two men and a woman aged between 40 and 50, were detained at 2.30pm on Sunday (July 27) when they turned up to give their statements at the Terengganu MACC office. "Initial investigations found that the three suspects allegedly committed the offences between 2015 and 2019. "They are believed to have received bribes amounting to about RM25,000 through separate fund transfers into their respective personal bank accounts,' the source said, adding that the alleged bribes involved 14 projects. The source also said the arrests followed the detention of a government agency director in January over a bribery case involving some RM900,000. State MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid confirmed the arrests when contacted, saying the case was being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. Alleged 'Datuk Seri' scam claims more victims in Kuala Lumpur
KUALA LUMPUR: Two more individuals are believed to have fallen victim to a scam involving a man falsely claiming to hold the honorific title of "Datuk Seri." Two days ago, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Datuk Seri Michael Chong revealed that his office had received six reports from individuals who were allegedly scammed by a person posing as a "Datuk Seri." One victim reportedly lost RM400,000 to the individual, who claimed to be running an investment scheme. Chong mentioned that the man in question had previously contacted his office and requested a press conference to clear his name, but later withdrew, citing health concerns. "He claimed he couldn't attend due to high blood pressure," Chong told reporters at a press conference held at Wisma MCA on Monday (July 28). Following the exposure of the alleged scam, Chong said the individual had threatened legal action against both him and the Council of Datuk-Datuk Malaysia (MDDM). "We have no intention of apologising. If he truly holds the title, he should come forward and prove its authenticity. He claims to be a 'Datuk Seri' with the phrase 'Ahli Istana Anak Angkat' above his name - but is that legitimate?' Chong questioned. Chong also displayed a copy of an identity card allegedly belonging to the man's partner, who referred to herself as "Putri," noting that the listed residential address was linked to the title "Undang Luak Johol Ke-14." He said the documents would be submitted to the Datuk Lembaga Suku Biduanda Raja Balang Luak Johol for verification. Chong urged others who may have fallen victim to the scam to lodge police reports. MDDM president Datuk Samson David Maman said the council had also received two calls from individuals claiming they were deceived by the same person, although the victims had yet to come forward. "We regularly receive complaints about bogus 'Datuk' or 'Datuk Seri' titles. We urge the public to verify any such claims through the official Bahagian Istiadat dan Urusetia Persidangan Antarabangsa website," he said. Meanwhile, Datuk Hamzah Limin, the Datuk Lembaga Suku Biduanda Raja Balang Luak Johol, reiterated that traditional titles under the Luak Johol jurisdiction are only valid if recommended by the Datuk Undang Johol and officially conferred by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan at Istana Besar Seri Menanti. "Any conferment carried out outside of official state ceremonies—such as in hotels or private venues—is not valid," he stressed. Hamzah also warned the public against the misuse of traditional symbols and titles, noting that some individuals have used unauthorised emblems, forged documents, and royal-style language such as "Duli Yang Maha Mulia," which is reserved exclusively for the state ruler. Mention dates fixed for BCS Aviation, director charged with unlicensed ground-handling refuelling operations
KUCHING (July 28): The Sessions Court here today fixed Dec 3 to 4, 2025 and Feb 9 to 13 next year for further mention of the case involving BCS Aviation (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and its director Dato Sri Robert Song Tung Wei, who are facing 60 charges related to conducting refuelling operations without a Ground Handling Licence (GHL). Judge Iris Awen Jon fixed the dates after defence counsel Samuel Bong Xuan En requested an extension of his client's bail, which was granted. Bong also informed the court that his legal firm Suhaili & Bong Advocates, as well as Chan Khoon Moh Advocates represented by Datuk Azrin Ahmat, had not been listed as counsels on the cause list. 'As such, we are currently unable to access the case files in the court's file system and humbly request that access be granted,' he said. Last December, the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) in a statement said BCS Aviation was charged with committing 30 offences under Section 37(1) of the Mavcom Act 2015, while Song faced the same 30 charges under the same Section read together with Section 92(2)(b) of the same Act. The offences were allegedly committed at the North Pan Hangar of Kuching International Airport between July 29 and Aug 18, 2019. Conviction carries a fine not exceeding RM1 million or imprisonment for up to three years, or both. Under the law, a valid GHL issued by Mavcom is required by any party wishing to carry out ground-handling services in Malaysia, including aircraft refuelling activities. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff appeared for the prosecution.
