Railways runs 5 special trains from Jammu, Udhampur, Pathankot; Officials say blackouts won't affect op

Indian Express09-05-2025

In the wake of the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan, the Indian Railways Friday ran five special trains, including a Vande Bharat train, to facilitate passengers in the border cities of Jammu, Udhampur and Pathankot.
Sources said that around 300 people associated with Indian Premier League (IPL) teams, including cricketers and supporting staff, took a special Vande Bharat train to reach Delhi.
On Thursday night, the IPL match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings in Dharamsala was called off after flood lights at the HPCA Stadium went off due to security reasons.
'Players and support staff of the IPL teams took the Vande Bharat train from Jalandhar. After closure of airports in the border areas amid escalating India-Pakistan tension, the Railways ran special trains to facilitate cricketers and common passengers,' said the source.
Officials said that over 8,000 people travelled in these special trains to Delhi from these cities, which are facing multiple blackouts and threat of attacks from Pakistan.
'A special train with 12 unreserved and 12 reserved coaches was operated from Udhampur to Delhi via Jammu at 10.45 am Friday. A 20-coach Vande Bharat rake was operated at 12.45 pm from Udhampur to New Delhi via Jammu and Pathankot,' said a senior official of the Ministry of Railways.
A 22-coach reserved special train was operated from Jammu around 7 pm on Friday, the official said, adding that the Railways will run special trains on Saturday as per requirement.
'We have received several requests to run special trains from Jammu to facilitate the travel of people stranded there. Several people, who went to see the IPL match in Dharamshala, were facing difficulties in going to their destinations after the match was abandoned due to security reasons. Many of these passengers boarded the train from Pathankot,' said the official.
Meanwhile, there has also been an increase in the cancellation of tickets booked for Jammu. The trains going towards Jammu are currently somewhat empty. However, the number of people coming from Jammu has increased significantly, officials said.
Officials, however, said that there has not been any cancellation of trains so far. 'The Railways operation has not been affected by the blackouts because we have our own grid system to run the trains. However, if any emergency arises, we have diesel locomotives. Along with this, all the railway stations at the border areas are being monitored in the war room at Railway Board level,' said the official.

AB de Villiers hints Virat Kohli ghosted him after last year's 'pregnancy' blunder: ‘Thank goodness! I had a footfall'

On June 3, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, minutes before the start of the IPL 2025 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the Punjab Kings, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers shared an emotional hug. Hours later, at the end of the thrilling night that saw the RCB claiming their maiden IPL title, the two greats of the franchise and the sport were seen sharing the screen for interviews and celebrating. But not long ago, the two weren't on talking terms. Speaking to the former South African international opened up on his blunder last year, which he revealed led to Kohli ignoring him for months. But admitted that he was happy when the former India captain started talking to him again around the start of this year. De Villiers was asked about Kohli's retirement from Test cricket, and whether he drew a parallel between his decision in 2018 and that of his former RCB teammate, with both having drawn the curtains "prematurely." He then opened up about his conversation with Kohli about the same, revealing that it was only six months back that the Indian legend began talking to him again after that blunder in 2024. "I know we were in the same boat because we spoke about it. He's been in touch with me over the last six months. Thank goodness! Because I did have a bit of a footfall not too long ago when they were expecting their second child. So, I was very relieved when he started talking to me again," he said. "We all know he went through a bit of a patch and sort of wanted to bounce a few ideas off me. How did I get through certain moments of my life. So, I knew what kind of phase he was going through, considering his age and how many games he's played, and the dynamics of being in the team all the time, the politics thereof as well. There are a lot of things weigh in on you, and so I shared with him from the heart what I felt and what I thought watching him on the screen. I'm happy he is still around playing cricket and that decision comes from the heart and I support him 100 per cent with that," he added. In early 2024, Kohli had skipped the entire home series against England, citing personal reasons. The decision instantly drew criticism from experts, before De Villiers, taking to his YouTube channel, jumped to his defence, saying that Kohli was away from national duty as he and his wife, Anushka Sharma, were expecting their second child. A few days later, he sharply retracted his statement, saying that he had 'made a big mistake.' Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar on the sidelines of the then-ongoing SA20 league in South Africa, he said: "Family comes first and then Cricket. I made a terrible mistake on my YouTube channel. That information was wrong and not true at all. Virat has every right to take a break from national duties due to family reasons. I think whatever's best for Virat's family, comes first. No one knows what's happening there, all I can do is wish him well. Whatever the reason for his break, I hope he can come back stronger, better, and fresh from this." Although, De Villiers' revelation was true as Kohli and Anushka welcomed their second child, a son named Akaay, on February 15, 2024.

‘Told I'd Be Retained, Then Dropped': AB De Villiers Reveals Shocking Truth About Delhi Daredevils

Former South African star AB de Villiers has made shocking revelations about his time with the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) during the early years of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a recent interview with the legendary batter opened up about the 'poisonous characters' and betrayal he experienced in his three seasons with the franchise. De Villiers joined Delhi Daredevils in the inaugural season of the IPL in 2008 and remained with them until 2010. While the team boasted legends like Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Glenn McGrath, and Daniel Vettori, the young Proteas batter had a mixed experience. 'I would hate to give you names... but Delhi Daredevils were in shambles,' de Villiers said. 'There were lots of poisonous characters in that side. Lots of legends, but some were cancerous inside.' Despite the troubles, de Villiers recalled some fond memories, especially bonding with greats like McGrath and Vettori, whom he admired as a young cricketer. Highs and Lows During His Tenure De Villiers had an underwhelming start in the IPL, but he turned things around in the 2009 season held in South Africa, scoring his maiden IPL century and playing a key role for the team. Still, he felt that he wasn't backed by the management as he deserved. '2009 was nice. I played almost the entire season. I thought I was going to be the man,' he said. 'But suddenly, I wasn't playing again. Mixed feelings all through.' Franchise Betrayal Before 2011 Auction The biggest blow for de Villiers came ahead of the 2011 IPL mega auction. Despite being assured by the Daredevils that he would be retained, he was unexpectedly released into the auction pool. 'Told I was going to be retained, and the next minute, I saw myself in the auction. I didn't even know what happened,' he revealed. 'So weird things happened.' A Blessing in Disguise While the Daredevils' decision hurt him at the time, it eventually turned into a career-defining moment. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) picked him up in the 2011 auction, and he went on to become an IPL legend. With RCB, de Villiers formed iconic partnerships with Virat Kohli and was a fan favorite for over a decade. He scored over 5000 runs for the franchise and became one of the most loved and respected players in IPL history. Although his time with Delhi was turbulent, de Villiers' honesty sheds light on the behind-the-scenes struggles players sometimes face. From a rocky start to IPL superstardom, ABD's journey remains one of the most inspiring tales in the tournament's history.

Mitch Johnson Slams Australia, Says Pacer 'Prioritised IPL Over National Team'

Last Updated: Mitchell Johnson took aim at Josh Hazlewood for 'prioritising IPL over Australia' and asked the selectors to not see the bowling big-four as a 'lock' going forward. Australian legend Mitchell Johnson, in a scathing assessment of the team's World Test Championship (WTC) loss to South Africa, has said that the bowling 'big four' of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon should no longer be seen as a 'lock', asking the selectors to consider changing things. He put particular focus on Hazlewood, who could only manage two wickets in the five-wicket defeat. Johnson accused the pacer of 'prioritising' featuring in the IPL over 'national team preparations' when the league resumed after a week-long break. Hazlewood was carrying a side strain and returned a few days after the season resumed, before eventually leading Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to their maiden title. 'Our successful 'big four' bowling attack of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon can't be taken for granted as a lock going forward either," Johnson wrote in The West Australian. 'We've seen concerns about Hazlewood's fitness in recent years, and his decision to prioritise returning to the delayed Indian Premier League over his national team preparations raised eyebrows. Lyon didn't look his best on day three either," he added. Australia had a look of a peaking side in the competition, with most players over 30 years of age. After the match, skipper Cummins also hinted at a possible reset. But Johnson wondered whether the seniors were 'sticking around' for the Ashes in the summer to get a 'send-off', and urged for chances to hungrier fringe players. 'If veteran players are sticking around just for the Ashes as a send-off, it does beg the question of whether that's the right mindset. It's crucial that we embrace the future and build confidence in selecting our next Test players. Players on the fringe such as Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and Scott Boland, despite being 36, have a different mentality. They're eager to prove themselves every time they get a chance," Johnson added. Johnson also said that neither Cameron Green at number three nor Marnus Labuschagne as the opener are long-term solutions for Australia. 'It's obvious Green didn't perform well – out for 4 and 0 and facing just five balls for the match. And the way he got out to Kagiso Rabada in both innings highlights that he might not be suited for that position. But the real issue stems from Marnus Labuschagne's poor form, similar to what we saw with Steve Smith moving up to open when he was struggling a bit. I'm just not a fan of these batting reshuffles to cover for lack of form. With the West Indies tour and then the Ashes coming up this summer, Australia will need to settle on not only two openers but also find a reliable No.3," he added.
