Sohar Freezone signs land lease agreement with Matrix Alloys (FZC) LLC for low-carbon ferrochrome plant

Suhar – SOHAR Freezone has signed a land lease agreement with Matrix Alloys (FZC) LLC, a leader in low-carbon ferrochrome production, to build a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly ferrochrome plant. This initiative strengthens Oman's role as a regional hub for sustainable industrial development and supports the goals of Oman 2050 Net Zero commitment to reduce carbon emissions and diversify the economy. The project, with an investment of USD 10 million, will occupy 2.2 hectares within SOHAR Freezone and aims to produce 20,000 tons annually of micro-carbon and low-carbon ferrochrome. The facility will meet stringent purity and sustainability standards demanded by key markets including Europe, Japan, South Korea, and India. Utilizing an electric-based production process that avoids coal and heavy-oil pollution, the plant will significantly reduce its environmental footprint and operate with zero waste gas or wastewater emissions. Furthermore, it seamlessly fits into Oman Vision 2040, promoting sustainable industrialization and encouraging foreign investment to drive long-term economic growth and environmental stewardship. The first phase is expected to be operational by 2026. Mr. Bailin Yi, Chairman of Matrix Alloys (FZC) LLC, said, 'Launching our first international ferroalloy plant in SOHAR Freezone offers us a strategic location with excellent infrastructure, market access, and competitive, stable, and low-cost energy essential for the energy-intensive smelting processes. We are committed to delivering premium low-carbon ferrochrome products that support global stainless-steel producers and promote a cleaner industrial future.' Mohammed Al Shizawi, Acting CEO of SOHAR Freezone, stated: 'This agreement underscores the trust that international investors place in SOHAR's integrated industrial ecosystem. Matrix Alloys is bringing advanced, sustainable manufacturing capabilities to our ferroalloy cluster, aligning perfectly with our vision to attract clean technology investments and strengthen SOHAR Freezone's position as a competitive gateway for global trade.' Matrix Alloys will benefit from SOHAR's proximity to raw material suppliers and customers, as well as direct port access, and a supportive regulatory environment that reduces operational costs. The plant also plans to secure ISO 14001 and ISO 14067 certifications to ensure full carbon emission traceability and compliance with international standards such as CBAM, EcoLeaf, and K-ETS. As SOHAR Freezone approaches full capacity in its initial development phase, this agreement marks a significant milestone in expanding Oman's green industrial base and attracting technology-driven industries to the region. Oman ensures steady supply of livestock ahead of Eid

Muscat – Authorities in Oman have confirmed sufficient livestock supplies and stable market prices across the country ahead of Eid al Adha, in a move aimed at ensuring consumer confidence during the festival. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR), in coordination with the Consumer Protection Authority (CPA), has taken steps to maintain smooth supply chains and prevent any price manipulation. Dr Masoud bin Suleiman al Azri, Director General of Agricultural and Fisheries Marketing at the ministry, said that around 318,000 goats and sheep, and 25,000 cattle are currently available in markets across all governorates. He added that a further 50,000 sheep are expected to arrive in the coming days. 'These quantities are sufficient to meet demand during the Eid season,' Dr Azri said. 'The increased supply will not affect market prices or availability.' MAFWR and CPA are jointly monitoring the markets to ensure livestock are sold at fair prices and meet acceptable quality standards throughout the country. To protect public health, consumers have been advised to verify the health of animals before purchase and ensure they show no visible signs of disease. Authorities strongly recommend using approved municipal slaughterhouses, which follow hygiene protocols and ensure safe disposal of waste. The ministry has reminded the public to take necessary precautions during the slaughter process. Livestock should be inspected for parasites such as ticks, though their presence is not always an indication of disease. Those handling the animals should be in good health, free from open wounds, and wear protective clothing. Improper disposal of slaughter waste, such as dumping in open areas, poses risks of disease transmission. The ministry has also issued a warning about zoonotic diseases, particularly Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a viral infection transmitted by ticks with a high fatality rate. Transmission can occur through skin contact, inhalation, ingestion, or via insects such as mosquitoes and fleas. These measures are part of the ministry's ongoing efforts to raise awareness and ensure public safety during the Eid season. The ministry urged all citizens and residents to adhere strictly to the guidelines for a safe and healthy celebration. © Apex Press and Publishing Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Oman opens first copper waste recycling plant

The first production phase is scheduled to begin in June 2025 with an output capacity of 60 tonnes of copper cathodes per year. By December 2026, capacity is expected to scale to 12,000 tonnes annually Oman has inaugurated its first industrial plant dedicated to converting legacy copper mining waste into high-purity copper using renewable energy and eco-friendly technologies — a major step toward green industrialisation and sustainable resource management in line with Oman Vision 2040 goals. Located in the Wilayat of Suhar, the plant was officially opened on Monday under the auspices of Qais bin Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. The launch was attended by ministers, senior officials and business leaders from across Oman's public and private sectors. Developed by Green Tech Mining and Services, the project is the first of its kind in the country. It was made possible through a strategic partnership between Oman Mining Company and Austria-based BPG Group, with support from the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion. Total investment exceeds RO 41 million. The initiative aims to turn environmental liabilities into economic value by reprocessing waste from historical copper mining operations. The first production phase is scheduled to begin in June 2025 with an output capacity of 60 tonnes of copper cathodes per year. By December 2026, capacity is expected to scale to 12,000 tonnes annually — significantly enhancing Oman's footprint in the regional green mining sector. Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, described the project as a 'qualitative leap' in Oman's industrial trajectory. 'This plant integrates environmental sustainability with economic diversification and industrial localisation. It reflects our commitment to innovation-led development and cleaner industrial practices.' The project also supports the Oman Industrial Strategy 2040 by boosting value-added production, attracting high-tech investments and localising industries that harness the country's natural resources. Copper cathodes produced at the facility will be classified as sustainably recycled metal — a key asset in global decarbonisation supply chains. Khalid bin Salim al Qasabi, Director-General of Industry at the ministry, said the plant represents a practical embodiment of the ministry's push to enable advanced industrial projects. 'We worked to ensure streamlined procedures and robust technical standards to bring this facility online. It's a model of regulatory coordination and sustainable investment.' Ernst Grissemann, CEO of BPG Group, highlighted the long-term vision behind the project, which began in 2018. 'The use of renewable energy and the plant's zero-waste approach underlines our dedication to the responsible industry. This facility positions Oman as a regional hub for green transformation in the mining sector.' As Oman seeks to elevate its industrial competitiveness, reduce environmental impact, and create new value chains from existing resources, this project offers a blueprint for scalable, environmentally responsible industrial growth — reinforcing the Sultanate's position in the global transition to sustainable development. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc.
