Microsoft plans to bring Xbox age verification to countries outside of the UK
Microsoft is implementing an age verification system on Xbox accounts to comply with the UK's Online Safety Act, and in a new blog post announcing the move, the company suggests it'll come to other countries, too. Players in the UK who indicate on their account that they're 18 years or older will now "begin seeing notifications encouraging them to verify their age," Microsoft says. The process is optional for now, and players will be able to enjoy playing Xbox games until "early 2026," when verification will become mandatory to "retain full access to social features on Xbox, such as voice or text communication and game invites." If you don't verify, you'll still be able to make purchases, play games and earn achievements, but social features will be limited to your friends. Microsoft says its hopes to learn from its UK program, and "roll out age verification processes to more regions in the future." The company cautions that the version it introduces in other regions might look different than the "proof of government-issued ID, age estimation, mobile provider check and credit card check" options it's offering in the UK, but age verification will be the norm. The UK's Online Safety Act was signed in to law in 2023 to ban nonconsensual deepfake porn and create rules preventing children from being exposed to adult content. As regulators have defined ways companies can comply with the law, implementing an age verification system has become the solution most platforms that host adult content have settled on. That's why Microsoft, Bluesky, Reddit, Discord and others have announced age-verification programs in the last few months. The problem is, no age verification system is foolproof, and in some cases all they take is a photo to circumvent. The Verge reports you can fool Reddit's age gate with the photo mode in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach , for example. Using a VPN has also proven to be a way to get around age verification tools. If companies take Microsoft's approach and introduce age verification in more regions, it might get harder to avoid, but widespread adoption has privacy and security implications of its own.

AMD tipped to provide chips for PS6, new PlayStation handheld and the next Xbox
A couple of weeks ago, the YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead posted a video on the unannounced AMD Zen 6 APU codenamed "Magnus" that would reportedly power the next Xbox or PlayStation 6. Now, he's returned with an update that confirms Magnus will power the new Xbox, while two different AMD APUs are alleged to feature in the PS6 and a PlayStation handheld. There is a lot of speculation in the update surrounding various codenames and Shakespearean characters. I'll break it down below plus details on what AMD's next APU could look like. According to Moore's Law is Dead, there are two groups of codenames that could be the PS6 and a potential handheld; Orion and Canis or Robin and Robin Plus. In the former set, Orion is the codename for the PS6 and Canis would power the handheld. Another known console leaker, Kepler L2 seemed to confirmed the Canis naming convention on the NeoGaf forums. They also claimed in another post that Canis has a monolithic design, meaning that the single silicon would contain the CPU and GPU on the on the same node. Different compared to say the AMD Ryzen SoC which has multiple smaller dies or chiplets connected to one another. The Robin/Robin Plus moniker is interesting in so far that AMD reportedly uses Shakespearean characters as codenames for PlayStation chips. For the PS5 the company allegedly used Oberon and Oberon Plus. Robin is a character from A Midsummer Night's Dream, though Puck would be the more well known name. Sony and AMD did recently announce a partnership for the next PlayStation console. It should be powerful, as we recently reported that the next Sony console could utilize up to 24GB of RAM. With the PlayStation out of the way, the AMD Zen 6 APU that Moore's Law is Dead leaked in mid-July has some more details now. THe APU will reportedly have a 3nm RDNA "AT2 GPU die and will have a 192-bit memory bus, and not the 384-bit bus that was revealed earlier, which would be smaller than the 320-bit bus on the Xbox Series X. Though we've seen speculation that AMD might split the bus. Previously, it was alleged that Magnus would feature 11 CPU cores, with three Zen 6 cores and eight Zen 6 cores. Microsoft and AMD announced in June that the companies were partnering on the future of Xbox gaming including improving Xbox Cloud Gaming. We should see more of this future when Xbox and Asus show off the ROG Xbox Ally which features an AMD Ryzen Z2 chip in the handheld console. Microsoft Edge is now an AI browser with launch of ‘Copilot Mode'
With demand for AI-powered browsers on the rise, Microsoft on Monday launched a new feature in its Edge browser called Copilot Mode, which allows users to browse the web while being assisted by AI. The idea is that the AI can become a helper that can understand what the user is researching, predict what they want to do, and then take action on their behalf. How well it works in practice remains to be seen, but Microsoft notes that Copilot Mode is still considered an experimental feature. It's also opt-in by default during these tests and is currently free for any Mac or PC users with access to Copilot. There are a few main components to Copilot Mode at launch, with more on the way. Once enabled, Edge users will be presented with a new tab page where they can search, chat, and navigate the web with Copilot's assistance. When visiting a specific web page, they can also turn to Copilot for more help. For example, Microsoft shows how someone might ask the AI companion if a recipe they're viewing could be made vegan instead, and the Copilot suggests substitutions. This type of question is something users might ask an AI chatbot today, but this saves the step of having to paste in the content they want to reference. Or, someone could just ask the AI to simply present the recipe itself so they can skip reading through the 'life story' that now accompanies so many online recipes. Image Credits:Microsoft In addition, Microsoft claims that Copilot can handle a variety of tasks on a user's behalf, like booking appointments, creating shopping lists, and drafting content. This 'agentic' use of the web is the next big leap in the AI browser race, but it's unclear if consumer adoption will naturally follow. The goal, of course, is to make it easier to perform everyday tasks, like reserving a room on or a flight via Kayak. However, chatting back-and-forth with an AI to go through the options and your needs isn't necessarily better or faster than just doing it yourself, depending on your familiarity with the website in question. Still, Copilot does allow for voice input, which could be handy for people who aren't as tech-savvy when it comes to booking things online, or for those who have limited mobility. (Later on, Microsoft says users will be able to give Copilot the additional context it needs, like credentials or history, to manage more advanced actions, like bookings. For now, it's a bit more manual.) What's more interesting, perhaps, is Copilot's ability to be a research companion. With the user's permission, Copilot can view all open tabs to understand what the person is browsing. This could be useful if they're doing some type of product comparison or online research, like pricing flights or hotels across multiple sites. Again, these are use cases for AI chatbots, but baking it into the browser could speed up the process of translating the user's needs to the digital helper. In the future, Copilot will also prompt people to pick up where they left off on a project or something they're researching, by recommending next steps, Microsoft says. The company stresses that Copilot will only be able to access someone's browsing content when they choose to allow it, and this will be made transparent to the end user with visual cues. However, the idea that you can now toggle on or off a feature that's able to view and listen to you while you search could leave some people unsettled.
