Shi Feng tames exhausted Srikanth to claim Malaysia Masters title

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's singles shuttler Li Shi Feng of China secured his first World Tour title of the year after beating giantkiller K. Srikanth of India in the Malaysia Masters final today (May 25).
Shi Feng, currently world No. 4, overcame a visibly exhausted Srikanth (world No. 65) 21-11, 21-9 in just 36 minutes at the Axiata Stadium.
The China No. 2 had not won a title since the Kumamoto Masters in November last year when he defeated Malaysian Leong Jun Hao in the final.
Former world No. 1 Srikanth had to go through the qualifying rounds to reach the final in the Malaysia Masters, a Super 500 tournament.
Shi Feng took home US$35,625 (RM150,800) while Srikanth secured US$18,050 (RM76,360) for his efforts.

From doubt to determination - Zii Jia back on track for worlds

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's line-up for the World Championships looks set to remain largely unchanged ahead of Tuesday's (Aug 11) closing entry, with men's singles ace Lee Zii Jia expected to make the trip to Paris from Aug 25-31. It was earlier believed that the former Asian champion Zii Jia might withdraw despite receiving an invitation from the Badminton World Federation (BWF). Zii Jia has been nursing a ligament injury in his right ankle, which forced him out of several tournaments, including the China and Japan Opens. However, as The Star reported earlier, a source close to the player said he has shown encouraging signs of recovery and has been undergoing intensive training with his coach Yeoh Kay Bin. This will be his first outing after a five-month injury layoff, with his last appearance being at the All-England in March. Joining him in the men's singles is Leong Jun Hao, who will be making his debut at the world meet. Zii Jia, however, will not be seeded this time as his ranking has slipped to No. 52. In the women's singles, Goh Jin Wei will be joined by K. Letshanaa. Women's doubles will see Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah going in as the second seeds alongside Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee. Men's doubles will have the largest representation with four pairs – 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 2 Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King. The mixed doubles will feature three Malaysian pairs – Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei (fourth seeds), husband-and-wife duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie (sixth seeds) and Hoo Pang Ron-Cheng Su Yin (13th seeds). The draw is scheduled on Wednesday (Aug 13).

Towering defender Paarveen begins new chapter in Portugal

KUALA LUMPUR: For most young footballers, the path to Europe is often a sprint filled with short trials, brief stints and a quick return home, but for Paarveen Waran, the journey has been more of a steady climb. Building on years of development across two continents before landing in Portugal, the 18-year-old defender signed with Portuguese Division Two side FC Vizela's Under-19 squad for the 2025-2026 season. While he will not walk straight into the senior setup, Vizela's youth programme offers something many young Malaysians rarely experience — a proven pathway to professional football in Europe. Their U-19s are Portugal's second division reigning champions and have produced players who have gone on to make top-flight appearances. Paarveen's football roots trace back to Australia, where he honed his game with Perth Glory and Perth SC. A return to Malaysia saw him join Johor Darul Ta'zim IV (JDT IV), where his imposing presence at 1.92m became a fixture in defence. Last season, he played a central role in guiding JDT IV to the Youth Cup title — a performance that drew interest from European scouts. Unlike many Malaysian players whose overseas ventures come in the form of short-term loans or trials, Paarveen's move is a long-term investment by Vizela. The undisclosed transfer fee reflects the belief that he can be developed into a player capable of competing at higher levels in Portugal. On Sunday, he made his debut for Vizela U-19s in the Portugal's National Under-19 Championship at the Campo Municipal de Santo Adriao in Vizela. The match ended in a goalless draw, but for Paarveen, it was a personal milestone. He summed it up in a short post on social media: "Good start to the season. Proud to make my debut." Paarveen follows in the footsteps of Nazmi Faiz Mansor and Safawi Rasid, who both had stints in Portugal. Nazmi signed a three-year contract with SC Beira-Mar in May 2012, where he played for their U-19 squad. His stay only lasted six-eight months before he returned to Malaysia. Safawi joined Portimonense SC on a season-long loan in Oct 2020. He featured for their Under-23 side and returned in Dec 2020, after approximately three months, with no senior team appearances. His venture also adds to a growing list of Malaysians stepping outside familiar borders this season.
