Shifeng makes Malaysia Masters history
KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 4 Li Shifeng made history as the first Chinese shuttler to win the Malaysia Masters men's singles title. Shifeng defeated India's former world No. 1 K. Srikanth 21-11, 21-9 in just 36 minutes at the Axiata Arena today. Shi Feng said he was surprised to learn that he was the first shuttler from China to win the men's crown. And he was more relieved to land his first World Tour title of the year after falling in the semi-final stage of three consecutive tournaments prior to the Malaysia Masters. "I didn't expect to be the first (winner from China) at this event because I wasn't really paying attention to who had won it before. But I think it's a very good start," said Shi Feng. "It's an encouragement and a relief. I haven't won a title in a long time. "But there's still a big gap with the top players as I haven't won titles at Super 1000-level or major competitions like the World Championships." Previously, Shifeng's last tournament win was the Super 500 Kumamoto Masters in November, last year. Despite his defeat, world No. 65 Srikanth produced a commendable performance at the Malaysia Masters, battling his way from the qualifying rounds to the final. It was the Indian's first final appearance since finishing runner-up to Singaporean Loh Kean Yew in the 2021 World Championships.

CHINESE men's singles player Li Shi Feng claimed his inaugural World Tour championship of the season following a decisive victory over India's giant-slaying K. Srikanth in Sunday's Malaysia Masters final (May 25). The world No. 4 Shi Feng dispatched a clearly drained Srikanth (ranked 65th globally) with a commanding 21-11, 21-9 triumph that lasted merely 36 minutes at Axiata Stadium. China's second-ranked player had been without a tournament victory since capturing the Kumamoto Masters title in November of the previous year, where he defeated Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao in the championship match. The former world No. 1 Srikanth was required to navigate through qualifying rounds before advancing to the final of this Super 500 event in Malaysia. For his championship performance, Shi Feng earned prize money of US$35,625 (RM150,800), while runner-up Srikanth collected US$18,050 (RM76,360) for his remarkable tournament run.

Kidambi Srikanth settles for runner-up finish after defeat to Li Shi Feng at Malaysia Masters 2025 final
Kidambi Srikanth faced defeat to his Chinese opponent Li Shi Feng in the final of Malaysia Masters 2025 on Sunday (May 25). After reaching his first men's singles final of a BWF event in six years, Srikanth ended his tournament by settling for a runners-up position Shi Feng, World number 4, won his maiden Malaysia Masters title by beating Indian veteran 21-11 21-9. The match began with Kidambi Srikanth winning the toss. He started the game by choosing a court and serving Shi Feng. He was quick to get the first point. However, Shi Feng was quick to recover and soon took a lead in the first game. The Indian shuttler attempted to get more points in his tally but his efforts went in vain as the game ended with 11-21. Shi Feng dominated the second game from the beginning by scoring the first point. Srikanth, world no. 65, managed to reach 9 points and the match concluded in just 33 minutes. Srikanth had made it to the final with a straight-game win over his Japanese opponent Yushi Tanaka. He beat Tanaka 21-18 24-22 on Saturday, in the semifinal clash. In doing so, Srikanth made it to his first final on the World Tour since India Open 2019 and his first final of an individual event since the World Championships final in 2021. 'Physically, I've been feeling well, but also the fact that I haven't played too many tournaments this last year,' Srikanth told BWF after winning the semifinals. 'Playing qualifying and all, so maybe kind of lost that touch of playing matches. And yeah, somehow everything worked out this time,' he added. Srikanth clinched a win against Toma Junior Popov of France with end results of 24-22, 17-21, 22-20 in the quarterfinal. The China No. 2 had not won a title since the Kumamoto Masters in November last year when he defeated Malaysian Leong Jun Hao in the final.
