Reserve Bank cuts rate by 25 basis points to 7.25%

This is the fourth reduction in a series of 25 basis point interest rate cuts since September 2024, only interrupted by a pause in March. The decision, which was widely
Kganyago said the decision comes against a volatile global scenario which has seen other central banks cutting interest rates, as well as a low growth projection for the local economy.
'The indicators for sectors like mining and manufacturing have been disappointing, and unemployment has risen. In our last meeting we warned of downside risks to our growth forecast. We have now trimmed our GDP projections, and currently expect growth of 1.2% this year, rising to 1.8% by 2027,' he said.
'The outlook for structural reforms remains positive, but there are also headwinds like lower global growth.'

'This reflects the lower starting point, as well as a stronger exchange rate assumption and lower world oil prices.
'These factors offset pressure on fuel costs from the higher fuel levy announced in the budget. In addition, our previous forecast included VAT increases, which have since been cancelled.'
The move will provide relief for South African consumers, FNB chief executive Harry Kellan said in a note.
'It comes at a time when we're seeing a more positive inflation outlook for the rest of the year, along with growing urgency to boost economic activity. That said, we may still see repo rates reduced once more this year, something we'll be watching closely in upcoming MPC meetings,' he said.
Referring to current discussions to change the bank's inflation target, Kganyago said 'for some years now, internal and external analysis has shown that our inflation target is too high and too wide'.
He added that the Reserve Bank and the treasury had extensively discussed this issue and technical work was at an advanced stage.
'Now that inflation has slowed, we have a chance to lock in lower inflation at low cost. This scenario illustrates that opportunity,' he said.
Kganyago said there was a consideration for a 3% objective from the current 4.5% mid-point target, which would pave the way for lower interest rates.
'For a 3% objective, our quarterly projection model shows a lower path for interest rates. Both our baseline and the 3% scenario have a cut in this quarter. However, rates move steadily lower in the scenario as inflation comes down,' the governor said.
'Inflation expectations stabilise at 3% during 2026, helped by the experience of lower inflation. Growth is somewhat slower at first, because real rates are initially higher, but the
The economy does better later in the forecast, as rates ease further.'
The monetary policy committee will next meet in July.

Zuma sacks Shivambu as MK secretary-general

MK party secretary general Floyd Shivambu. (Photo: Luba Lesolle/Gallo Images) In a statement issued by the party on Tuesday, The party cited Section 3(j) under 'Offences' which prohibits members from undertaking international trips and engaging in activities that conflict with the agenda of the MK party or its allied organisations. 'The trip was not an officially sanctioned programme of the organisation or the president, which therefore goes against the constitution of the party,' the statement read. Zuma said the national officials found that Shivambu's visit to Malawi contradicted the values and prescripts of MK and had implications for its image and principles. In March, Malawi's chief resident magistrate granted South Africa's request to extradite Bushiri and his wife Mary, who face charges in the country after skipping bail in 2020. Tuesday's statement confirmed that the MK party had received concerns from civil society regarding Shivambu's conduct. 'The president and the national officials were left with no other option but to act swiftly in addressing this matter,' it said. The decision comes amid growing internal pressure within the party to remove Shivambu from his position, a move his supporters said was In recent weeks, multiple senior party members and provincial leaders had raised concerns about his leadership style, decision-making, and perceived unilateral actions. Some criticised what they described as a lack of consultation on key organisational matters, while others accused him of prioritising personal political manoeuvring over the collective interest of the party. These tensions had been building since April and intensified after news of his Malawi visit surfaced. The jaunt was viewed by some as the final act of defiance, prompting calls from within the party's national working committees for immediate action. Despite his instrumental role in building the party's mobilisation structures during its early stages, Shivambu's relationship with sections of the leadership had deteriorated. Last week a letter from the party was leaked by his opposers regarding his removal as secretary general. Shivambu will now serve in the National Assembly. The statement said his redeployment is aimed at strengthening the MK party caucus in parliament, where it serves as the official opposition. This move has been viewed by some as 'strategic', with Shivambu expected to strengthen the party in parliament after the removal of Mzwanele Manyi as chief whip last week. Shivambu, a former member of parliament and deputy president for the Economic Freedom Fighters, joined the MK party last year and was later appointed national organiser and then secretary general. Zuma acknowledged Shivambu's contribution to the party and said discussions were held with him regarding the redeployment. Shivambu has accepted the decision. 'The national officials have come to a decision to redeploy Commander Floyd Shivambu as the secretary general of the party, and redeploy him to the National Assembly,' the statement said. The party did not announce who would replace Shivambu as secretary general.

Petrol and diesel prices to drop at midnight

At midnight motorists will be greeted by the fourth consecutive month of fuel price decreases. The minister of mineral and petroleum resources said the lower prices are due to an improvement in the rand/US dollar exchange rate and the decrease in the international oil price. The retail prices of both grades of petrol decrease by 5c/ l on Wednesday, while the wholesale price of diesel reduces 37c/ l . Illuminating paraffin sees a 56c/ l reduction. The decreases would have been even more had it not been for the 16c increase for petrol and 15c increase for diesel in the general fuel levy (GFL) announced by finance minister Enoch Godongwana in the latest iteration of his 2025 budget speech earlier in May. Godongwana said the adjustment — the first in three years — would help fill the gap from his rejected VAT hike proposal and ease the main budget deficit.
