Ezra Miller makes shock Cannes appearance years after fleeing spotlight

Metro18-05-2025

Ezra Miller has resurfaced at Cannes Film Festival, years after fleeing the spotlight in a wake of several high-profile controversies.
The actor, 32, who goes by they/them pronouns, starred as The Flash in the DC Cinematic Universe until 2023.
They have been keeping a low profile since being involved in a number of controversies prior to that film's release, including a string of arrests and police separate charges of burglary, second-degree assault, harrassment and disorderly conduct.
This included the allegation that Miller had engaged in 'inappropriate behaviour' around a 12-year-old from the child's parents – allegations which Miller has always refuted.
Since then, Miller withdrew from the spotlight as they began 'ongoing treatment' for 'complex mental health issues' – finally re-emerging at this weekend's Cannes in support of director Lynne Ramsey.
Ramsay, who was there for the premiere of her new film Die, My Love with stars Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence, previously worked with Miller on the 2011 thriller We Need to Talk About Kevin.

According to Variety, Miller did not pose for photographs on the red carpet.
Footage from the event shows the actor walking at a fast pace past a wall of cameras, to the stairs beyond.
They wore a maroon tuxedo, with a beret over their long hair. They sported a moustache over their upper lip, offering only a hint of a smile as they sped on their way.
Miller's controversies began in April 2020, when a video surfaced showing the actor apparently choking a woman at a bar in Reykjavik, Iceland.
It did not result in any charges, and they have never discussed the incident.
In March 2022, they were charged with disorderly conduct and harassment over their alleged involvement in two separate incidents at a bar in Hawaii.
They were accused of shouting and swearing at customers as they sang karaoke before forcibly grabbing a microphone from a 23-year-old woman.
Miller pleaded no contest to one count of disorderly conduct and paid a $500 (£398) fine over the incident.
That same month, a married couple took out a temporary restraining order after claiming that Miller burst into their bedroom and threatened to kill them, allegedly stealing her passport and his wallet as they left.
Two weeks later, the restraining order case was dismissed by a judge at the couple's request.
In June, the parents of 19-year-old Native American activist Tokata Iron Eyes filed a protection order against the Fantastic Beasts star.
They accused the actor of grooming their child from the age of 12, while exhibiting patterns of 'cult-like and psychologically manipulative, controlling behaviour.'
According to Vanity Fair, Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Court filed a temporary order against Miller, but dismissed Tokata's parents' request to make it permanent.
They later withdrew their request for a conservatorship over Tokata, which was needed to file a restraining order against their child's will, as they were now over 18.
Shortly after this incident, a mother from Greenfield, Massachusetts, and her child were granted a temporary harassment prevention order against Miller, alleging that the actor 'menaced their family one evening in their downstairs neighbour's home and acted inappropriately toward' the minor.
In a statement released after the temporary order was dropped, Miller wrote: 'I'm encouraged by today's outcome and very grateful at this moment to everyone who has stood beside me and sought to ensure that this egregious misuse of the protective order system was halted.
'Protective orders are meant to provide safety for individuals, families, and children who are in danger.
'They are not meant to be used as weapons by those seeking attention or fleeting tabloid fame or some sort of personal vengeance when there are people in true and dire need of these services.
'I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive actions.'
They went on: 'On a personal note, I want everyone to know that I am continuing to do my best to preserve my own wellness and what I can to reverse the collateral damage this ordeal has brought upon me and those close to me.
'Finally, to all you many beings in this world who have had the enormous courage to see me through it all and make it here with me – I will spend a long time trying to explain to you what it has meant to have your support.
'You have my undying gratitude, admiration and love.'
In June, Miller was also accused of hosting a woman and her three young children at their farm in an 'unsafe environment' – including claims that there were 'guns strewn' around everywhere and that a one-year-old child found a loose bullet and put it in her mouth.
Vermont State Police tried to serve an emergency care order to the woman, requiring the removal of the children from her care and Miller's home, but the actor told them the family had left two months prior and not returned.
No charges have been filed against Miller related to this incident.
In August 2022, Miller was charged with the alleged burglary of a home in Stamford, Vermont, where they are said to have stolen bottles of alcohol. More Trending
The star later pleaded guilty to unlawful trespassing, in the hope of having other charges from the same case, specifically burglary and larceny, dropped.
As part of the deal, they are required to undertake random drug tests and continue seeking mental health treatment.
Before the plea deal, Miller announced last year that they were seeking treatment, saying in a statement: 'Having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, I now understand that I am suffering complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment.'
'I want to apologise to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behaviour. I am committed to doing the necessary work to get back to a healthy, safe and productive stage in my life.'

'If Hull KR are seen as favourites, we embrace it'

Betfred Men's Challenge Cup final - Hull KR v Warrington WolvesVenue: Wembley Stadium, London Date: Saturday, 7 June Kick-off: 15:00 BST Coverage: Live on BBC One from 14:00 BST; radio commentary on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, BBC Radio Humberside & BBC Radio Merseyside; live text on BBC Sport website & app Not since the days of Gavin Miller, Gary Prohm and George Fairburn have Hull KR been such the talk of rugby not since those days have the Robins lifted a major is fitting then that 40 years on from the title-winning side of 1984-85 the class of 2025 have put the buzz back into East Hull and can shatter that trophy all starts with Saturday's Challenge Cup final against Warrington Wolves, with Hull KR no longer the underdogs given their remarkable ascent under Willie one league defeat, by champions Wigan, lightly blemishes the Rovers record in all competitions this season, and thus all signs point to red and white glory at is far more cautious, but wants the team to meet expectations head-on."Now we're in a position where people are saying we're favourites, we need to embrace that," Peters told BBC Radio 5 live."We've put ourselves in a position to be called the favourites although I still think it's a 50-50 game because they're a very good team."It's going to be a tight game there's no doubt, we just need to win more moments than we lose and that normally determines whoever wins." Disappointment to be learned from Following on from those 1980s stars like Miller, Prohm, Fairburn and others such as Mark Broadhurst, Mike Smith and David Watkinson, the current crop are equally well-stocked for enforcer Jared Waerea-Hargreaves brings the fear factor of a Broadhurst, captain Elliot Minchella captures the swashbuckling ball-handling of former Man of Steel Miller, and semi-final hero Jack Broadbent will be doing the Fairburn job from full-back with Arthur Mourgue the headline act these days is Mikey Lewis - a homegrown dynamo and the reigning Man of will have taken heart from the way these Robins have managed the excitement of reaching Wembley and continued their relentless form in Super League on the back of beating Catalans Dragons in their York the run to Wembley included the intensity of a quarter-final against neighbours Hull FC, added to a league derby against their rivals which were both negotiated smoothly amidst a run of tricky Warrington at times failing to match their cup highs in league matches given their lying eighth in the table, the league leaders could be forgiven for feeling the weight of expectation in Saturday's is a different scenario from their 2023 experience when Rovers and Leigh were considered equal odds before the Leopards triumphed in Golden Point, and last year's Grand Final when holders Wigan were hotly-tipped to take the prize, and did."I don't think it [form] does bring pressure, it should give the players a lot of belief knowing that we've had a lot of challenges in different situations this year," Peters added."We've had different scenarios this year which would have put us under the pump if we'd allowed it to, but we didn't and I'm proud of the players for that."You are going to go through setbacks and you need to experience adversity to grow, that's what they've done." Rovers players unaffected by fan jibes Few fans are as aware of Hull KR's trophy starvation than those of their fiercest rivals Hull FC, who unsurprisingly have a terrace ditty dedicated to it happens, the other side of Hull had their moment in 2016, when they brought to an end jibes from Robins fans about their inability to win at Wembley with victory, coincidentally, against the players have enough to concern themselves with on the day aside from unwanted history, the chance to give the fans some respite and quash the chant for good could be a spark somewhere for those involved on Saturday."We don't speak about it and mention but we're aware of it because it is mentioned elsewhere," back-rower James Batchelor told BBC Sport."The motivation we get is a lot of little things from wherever and when that's something that is used against the fans you definitely want to be able to help them shed that tag - but it's not something we speak about or get dragged into." Batchelor has seen brother Joe win the cup with St Helens, and his sibling will hope he can return the favour when he takes his seat at Wembley along with other members of the has also been there with his football team Huddersfield Town, witnessing the delirious joy of promotion and the haunting sorrow of play-off defeat in equal 2025, it will be with his other family, a close-knit Hull KR team that he takes to the field with and experiences what he hopes will be more happy memories and the chance to emulate Joe in the winner's circle."This group feels on another level, when Willie first came in at the same time as me it was all about connecting, caring about each other and being best mates off the field," Batchelor added."We roll up to grounds with the music on and we're pretty happy and relaxed because we do that all week as well."Willie makes sure we have the music around the club through the week on training days and try to make the build up to the games feel almost like that for training. We're nice and relaxed and don't get uptight with it. It's definitely working for us." Robins focus inwardly for final Among the many subplots going into the final is the coming together of two old friends in Peters and opposite number Sam Burgess who know each other from time at Australian NRL side South Sydney who describes the "big fella" as '"competitive" in his own style, has his game-plan set to get the better of Warrington, and yet is wary of the threat they will pose."We always focus on us but we'll do a thorough preview," Peters added."We've planned they'll have the majority of their players back in the side who haven't been playing, George Williams being back."But it doesn't matter, whatever turns up on the teamsheet on that day we'll have a plan but it's in and around what we do, we've a mentality of they've got to stop us, this our plan and what we're going to deliver and we make sure we get that on Saturday."Hull KR have delivered on everything Peters has hoped for so far apart from a trophy, and Saturday can finally see that mission has put everything in place to ensure it, now his players must match their past performances and create new history.

Robert De Niro, 81, reveals number one parenting rule after admitting he doesn't change baby's diapers

Robert De Niro has revealed what he thinks the most important rule of parenting is. The 81-year-old Hollywood icon is dad to seven kids — his youngest being two-year-old daughter Gia, whom he shares with girlfriend Tiffany Chen, 45. 'The main thing is to support your kids,' the seasoned parent — who just attended Cannes Film Festival — said. He reiterated while speaking to Entertainment Tonight: 'As long as they're not hurting themselves, doing anything destructive or anything like that, you have to support them — period.' The A Bronx Tale star added, 'Even if you don't go with it or think that they… you have to support them. And they have to know that you support them. Always.' During his ET interview, the seasoned entertainer also opened up about his youngest child, whom he and Chen welcomed in April 2023. 'She's just pure joy,' the proud father gushed. 'She's two now, so as they get older and older then… you know? But it's always wonderful. Pure joy, what can I say?' It comes after he admitted that he does not change his baby's diapers. 'No, no, but I used to,' he told Sunday Times in January. 'I spend my mornings watching Miss Rachel with her, and I give her her bottle.' In addition to Gia, the actor is a parent to Drena, 57, Raphael, 48, twins Julian and Aaron, 29, Elliot, 27, and Helen, 14. His first two children came from his marriage to Diahnne Abbott. He went on to welcome twins with girlfriend Toukie Smith. Elliot and Helen are shared with ex-wife Grace Hightower — the two married in 1997 and separated in 2018. On the Today show in 2023, De Niro said about becoming a father for the seventh time: 'It feels great.' In regards to how he has changed as a father, the star told host Hoda Kotb, 'I have certain awareness — when you're older you have awareness of certain things in life, dynamics, everything, family dynamics.' The Goodfellas sensation added, 'You can't avoid learning certain things and how you can deal with those and manage them and this and that, the usual. 'It's amazing, but I'm very happy about it.' Shortly after the news of his new family addition came to light, the actor told Page Six that welcoming his youngest child was 'planned' and questioned 'how you could not plan that kind of thing.' Meanwhile, he told The Guardian in October 2023, '[Having children] doesn't get easier. It is what it is. It's OK. I mean, I don't do the heavy lifting. 'I'm there, I support my girlfriend. But she does the work. And we have help, which is so important.'

Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins on ‘ridiculous' feud rumours

There has been speculation that the two co-stars had drifted apart after being on the HBO show, which follows the lives of guests and staff at a luxury resort as dark secrets are revealed and tensions rise over the course of the holiday. The third series sees the positive Chelsea, played by British actress Wood, 31, try to keep her mysterious older boyfriend, Rick, played by 53-year-old US actor Goggins, calm in Thailand. Following the 2025 series, Goggins appeared to step away from his fellow co-stars, and unfollow Greater Manchester-born Wood on Instagram. They both addressed the swirling rumours during a joint interview for US publication Variety, which was published on Wednesday. Goggins said: 'There is no feud. I adore, I love this woman (Aimee) madly, and she is so important to me.' He added that 'she's special', and explained he had not addressed the reports before as he did not want to talk about Wood when she was not there. 'I think it's such a comment on where we're at culturally. Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don't give a shite about Instagram,' Wood said. Goggins said that when he finished The White Lotus he 'needed to just back away from everyone', as it is his 'process' when filming a project ends. 'It's all so ridiculous,' he said. 'It's just a part of me just saying goodbye to this character so that now Aimee and I will be friends for f****** ever.' Wood previously criticised a Saturday Night Live sketch, with an cast member impersonating her with exaggerated prosthetic teeth, calling it 'mean and unfunny' on Instagram. She told Variety that it 'felt misogynistic. It felt like the punchline was a woman's appearance, which is just not funny. It's not cool'. Goggins shared the same sketch online and praised Jon Hamm for playing a version of his character, before deleting the Instagram post, ahead of hosting SNL> He said he was 'gonna say it (something) to your face', and added: 'I don't use social media in any way, and I'm not a mean guy.' SNL apologised for the April sketch, according to Wood, and the comedian and cast member who impersonated her, Sarah Sherman, sent her flowers to apologise. Wood is also known for Netflix teen show Sex Education, BBC comedy Daddy Issues and the 2022 drama film Living with Bill Nighy. Goggins has been in Western series Justified, post-apocalyptic series Fallout, and drama Sons Of Anarchy. He has had two Emmy nods, while Wood has won a TV Bafta for Sex Education and been given a Rising Star Bafta nomination.
