The Hindu11-07-2025
Italy will face Netherlands in the last match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier 2025 tournament at Voorburg Cricket Club on Friday.
Italy is on the cusp of securing a maiden berth for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup next year, to be held in India and Sri Lanka, after stunning Scotland by 12 runs on Wednesday.
While a win will ensure Italy's place at the showpiece next year, even a narrow defeat against the Dutch will be enough for The Azzurri to qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup, should neither Jersey or Scotland win their contest, to be held earlier in the day, by a big margin.
Italy currently tops the five-team standings, with five points from three matches. Moreover, with a healthy Net Run Rate of +1.722, Italy is in a strong position to secure a historic spot for the T20 World Cup next year.
Netherlands is second on the table with four points, but will be eliminated if it loses to Italy since one of Jersey and Scotland (both on three points) will surpass its tally. However, if Netherlands beats Italy, it will ensure a top-of-the-table finish and qualify for next year's T20 World Cup. The battle for the second qualification spot from Europe will then come down to Net Run Rate between Italy and Jersey/Scotland.

'Hamaare saamne Virat Kohli hai': Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan told they must quit if respect is lost after Asia Cup snub

Former Pakistan fast bowler Tanveer Ahmed sparked a debate after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Sunday announced the squad for the Asia Cup, saying that Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, who were snubbed for the tournament, should follow the 'Virat Kohli' path and retire from international cricket if "respect matters." Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were not picked for Asia Cup It was not long ago that Babar was the No. 1 T20I batter, having broken numerous records in the format, and until last year, in the T20 World Cup, even captained Pakistan, with the PCB having reinstated him in the role. Rizwan, too, was part of that squad that suffered a forgettable group-stage exit in the USA. However, both were snubbed from the two T20I series Pakistan played this year, before incurring a similar fate for the Asia Cup. Taking to social media, Tanveer urged the two senior batters to consider quitting international cricket if they felt disrespected. "Meri Babar Azam aur Rizwan say request hai ager ap log yeh samajhtey hain ap logon ke izzat nahi ha tou retirement ley lo international cricket say humarey samne virat kohli ke examples hain. @babarazam258, @iMRizwanPak izzat apney hath main ha (My request to Babar Azam and Rizwan is that if you feel your respect is not intact, then consider retiring from international cricket. We have examples of Virat Kohli in front of us. Babar and Rizwan, respect is in your hands)," he tweeted. Kohli was widely speculated to have announced his shock retirement from Test cricket in May after being pressurised by the BCCI. However, board Vice-President Rajeev Shukla later clarified that it was entirely Kohli's decision. 'We are feeling the absence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. It was their decision to retire and the BCCI doesn't tell any player to retire. It was their call," he said last month. Following the squad announcement, Pakistan white-ball head coach Mike Hesson revealed that Babar had been asked to work on his strike rate in the format, especially against spinners, and deliver strong performances in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) later this year to force his way into the Pakistan T20I setup for the World Cup next year. "There's no doubt Babar's been asked to improve in some areas around taking on spin and in terms of his strike rate. Those are things he's working really hard on," Hesson said. "A player like Babar has an opportunity to play in the BBL and show he's improving in those areas in T20s. He's too good a player not to consider," he added. Tanveer also raised concerns about Pakistan's selection process for the Asia Cup, questioning whether Fakhar Zaman, who suffered a left hamstring strain during the 2nd T20I on the recent West Indies tour, was forced into the team. "Was Fakhar Zaman forced into the team, or was he included to prevent Babar Azam from being selected? How did Fakhar Zaman get in?" he asked.

Asia Cup squad selection buzz: Big calls, bold omissions await

The selection day is closing in on us, and so are the speculations. The Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, will sit with captain Suryakumar Yadav and the team management in Mumbai on Tuesday, August 19, to pick the squad for the Asia Cup T20, starting September 9 in the the eight-team event comes after a lull in Indian cricket, all eyes are on the meeting, as the squad will likely reveal the thought process of the selectors and the team management, led by Gautam Gambhir, in the build-up to next year's T20 World things first: Suryakumar has reportedly cleared a fitness test after undergoing surgery for a sports hernia post-IPL 2025. The Mumbai Indians star is set to lead India in a major tournament for the first time in his LOGJAM: SHUBMAN GILL IN? The biggest talking point has been the chatter around Shubman Gill. A one-day international mainstay, Gill was handed the Test captaincy after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from the format earlier this year. He silenced critics with a record-breaking series in England, scoring 754 runs and leading India to a 2-2 draw in a fiercely fought five-Test no surprise Gill is being projected as the next big superstar of Indian cricket. And what do superstars of the past - Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni - have in common? They played across formats. That's why Gill remains in the conversation for the Asia Cup T20 squad, with an eye on next year's World India's T20 World Cup 2024 triumph under Rohit and Rahul Dravid, the team has played 20 T20Is. Gill led the first series post title-win -- an away series in Zimbabwe with second-string stars. He was then part of a T20I series in Sri Lanka, which doubled as Gambhir's first assignment as then, Gill hasn't featured in T20Is, focusing instead on Tests. In his absence, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have cemented themselves at the top, scoring 535 and 487 runs respectively, at averages of 33 and 34, and blistering strike rates of 193 and 171. They have embodied the fearless, high-tempo cricket India have embraced under Gambhir and results speak for themselves: India have looked nearly unbeatable, including a 4-1 thrashing of England earlier this year at Gill is talented enough to play all three formats. But does his approach fit the new T20I template? He scored 650 runs in IPL 2025 at a strike rate of 155, but his T20I strike rate stands at 139, dipping to 129.25 in his last seven arise if Gill is indeed named vice-captain, as reported. That would almost force him into the XI, potentially disrupting the well-settled top four. Could he slot in at No. 3 ahead of Tilak Varma? That would be harsh on Tilak, who has 413 runs at a strike rate of 170 and is currently ranked No. 2 in T20I what about Yashasvi Jaiswal? The Mumbai opener, part of the 2024 World Cup squad, has played only six T20Is since, scoring 221 runs at a strike rate of 170. He also tallied 559 runs at 159.71 in IPL 2025 for Rajasthan Royals. On form alone, Yashasvi deserves to be India's back-up opener in the Asia Cup wunderkind Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the 14-year-old breakout star of IPL 2025 with a strike rate of 206, continues to excite. He has got the backing of former captain and chief selector Kris Srikkanth for a spot in the Asia Cup squad. But the prodigy may have to wait until after next year's World Cup for senior team then there's Sai Sudharsan, the Orange Cap winner. His consistency has been unquestionable, but his strike rate remains a concern for MIDDLE-ORDER: RIYAN PARAG OUT?Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel are locked-in picks. But reports suggest India are considering a recall for Shreyas seen as a stabilizer in T20 cricket, Iyer reinvented himself in IPL 2025 with 604 runs at a strike rate of 175 - his best ever season. His experience and ability to dominate spin could be crucial in UAE conditions, where scoring tends to however, puts Riyan Parag in danger. The Royals all-rounder has been part of Gambhir's T20I plans, but with Iyer's return, he may lose out. While Parag's bowling utility is valuable, selectors may take the tough call to leave him WICKETKEEPER CONUNDRUMSanju Samson is the frontrunner for the wicketkeeper-batter role. The question is about his Jurel was backup in the England series, but Jitesh Sharma now seems ahead in the pecking order. The RCB keeper had a standout IPL 2025, excelling as a finisher for the Rishabh Pant and Ishan Kishan still injured, selectors may opt for Jitesh, who brings proven finishing ability. His T20I record - 100 runs in 9 games - is modest, but his IPL strike rate of 170 this season has likely put him back in the SINGH DROPS DOWN THE LADDER?Rinku Singh has been India's designated T20I finisher alongside Hardik, but consistency has eluded him. Across 18 T20Is since the 2024 World Cup, he has just 190 runs at an average of 21 and a strike rate under IPL 2025 campaign was equally underwhelming - 206 runs in 13 matches, averaging below 30. The KKR star may now find himself slipping behind in the pecking ALL-ROUNDERSHardik Pandya and Axar Patel are automatic picks. Washington Sundar remains in the frame for his versatility, while Nitish Kumar Reddy, who is likely to miss out of the Asia Cup due to injury, could feature in the long-term plans once fit all-rounder who might not make the cut is Shivam Dube. A key member of India's T20 World Cup-winning squad in 2024, the Chennai Super Kings all-rounder hasn't managed to fire in the recent past. In six T20Is since that World Cup final, Dube has hit 122 runs in six matches. Even in IPL 2025, Dube's strike rate dropped to 132 from 162 in the previous GROUP: WILL BUMRAH PLAY?Another burning question: Jasprit Bumrah's availability. Criticised for "picking and choosing" assignments after missing two England Tests, Bumrah has reportedly told selectors he is available for the Asia should he play? UAE pitches won't suit pacers, and India's management has been mindful of his workload with a crucial home Test season coming up. With four Tests scheduled in October-November - India's first assignment without R. Ashwin - resting Bumrah might be have coped without him before, like in the Champions Trophy. Arshdeep Singh has led admirably, while Harshit Rana has grown into the role. Mohammed Siraj may be rested after his heavy Test workload in the Anderson-Tendulkar might be the right time to bring back Prasidh Krishna, who last played T20Is in 2023. The Karnataka pacer was the Purple Cap winner in IPL 2025 with 25 wickets and had an impressive outing in the England Test series. Free of injuries that have been nagging him for a while, Prasidh might be the trump card for India in T20I cricket as they build a team for next year's World terms of specialist spin-bowling options, Varun Charkravarthy is a definite starter. India also have the ever-reliable Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi, who has played 18 matches since the last T20 World might be in the mix for the World Cup, but he is likely to miss out on the Asia Cup is going to be one of Bishnoi and Kuldeep for the second specialist spinner's role as India might not risk shortening their batting. Washington might even get the nod ahead of both these two, considering how effective he has been in terms of bowling in the powerplay as well as in the middle-overs for SQUAD FOR ASIA CUP T20Likely squad size: 16–17 players, with eyes on zeroing in on a core XIAbhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep (5 players)Yashasvi Jaiswal, Jitesh Sharma, Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Harshit likely to miss outRinku Singh, Shubman Gill, Mohammed Siraj, Ravi Bishnoi, Riyan Parag, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Shivam Dube.- EndsYou May Also Like

Asia Cup 2025: Suryakumar Yadav to stay as India's T20I captain, Shubman Gill likely to miss out

Indian cricket team Mumbai: The focus is likely to be on maintaining continuity and keeping faith in the young and successful T20 specialists when the Indian selectors meet here at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters on Tuesday to pick the squad for the Asia Cup (to be played in the T20 format) in the UAE, scheduled from September 9-28. The meeting will be attended by India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav , who will fly in from Bengaluru after clearing his fitness test at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE), which means SKY stays on as India's T20 captain, possibly till the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Contrary to expectations, star batter and India's Test captain Shubman Gill , who was tipped in some quarters to take over the vice-captaincy role in the T20 format after a highly successful tour of England, where he scored 754 runs in five Tests @75.40 with a top score of 269, is currently struggling to even make it to what is likely to be not more than a 15-man squad -- unless head coach Gautam Gambhir pushes for his inclusion in the T20 format too. "Gill is a terrific batsman, all the selectors and head coach Gautam Gambhir are huge fans of his batting, and he is rated almost as highly as Virat Kohli in India's cricket circles in terms of potential. However, he doesn't fit into the T20 scheme of things right now. Presently, the idea is to persist with 'keeper-bat Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as openers, with Tilak Varma coming in at No. 3 and skipper Suryakumar at No. 4. If you see, Abhishek and Varma are rated as the No. 1 & No. 2 batters in T20Is in the ICC rankings currently. How can you keep them out?" a source close to the developments told TOI. Gill had a successful IPL 2025 too, where he slammed 650 runs in 15 matches @50.00, at a strike rate of 155.87, with six fifties, while captaining the Gujarat Titans. Along with young left-hander Sai Sudharsan, the 25-year-old forged an extremely prolific opening combination for GT. India captain Shubman Gill speaks during a press conference at Edgbaston, Birmingham, England, Tuesday July 1, 2025. AP/PTI(AP07_01_2025_000278A) However, Samson, Sharma, and Varma have done enough in T20Is last year to have the team management's confidence in them, at least for now. Samson smashed three hundreds in T20Is last year -- two against South Africa in an away series (107 & 109*) and one (111) against Bangladesh at Hyderabad in the home series. Tilak cracked back-to-back centuries (107 not out & 120 not out) against South Africa in November 2024. The 22-year-old had an average IPL this time for the Mumbai Indians, managing 343 runs in 16 matches @31.18 with two fifties, but that is unlikely to be held against him. "Even Hardik Pandya had a bad IPL last year (while captaining MI), but he turned out to be one of India's biggest heroes of their 2024 T20 World Cup triumph in the West Indies. Even greats like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have endured bad IPLs, but they were a different beast while playing for India in T20Is. You can't judge a player just by one IPL," a source pointed out. Abhishek, of course, is a certainty after bludgeoning a scintillating 135 off just 54 balls, including 13 sixes and seven fours, against England at the Wankhede Stadium on February 2 this year. Incidentally, it was the last T20I India played before the Asia Cup. (PTI Photo/Atul Yadav) *** Local Caption *** "The current top four in India's T20 cricket reflect their new-found resolve to play fearlessly in this format. In fact, if you are talking about taking a third opener in the Asia Cup squad, the case of Yashasvi Jaiswal is stronger than Gill's. Jaiswal has the tendency to hit a lot more boundaries in the Powerplay overs, which is mandatory in today's T20 cricket. If you remember, Jaiswal was in India's main squad in the T20 World Cup last year, while Gill was in the reserves," the source said. However, it's learnt that Jaiswal, who scored two hundreds in the Test series in England (101 at Leeds & 118 at The Oval), has been asked to focus on red-ball cricket for now, considering India are scheduled to play four home Tests in the 2025-26 season—two each against West Indies and South Africa. Poll Who do you think should be the vice-captain for India's T20 squad? Shubman Gill Sanju Samson Abhishek Sharma Shreyas Iyer Iyer too struggling to make the cut Like Gill, Shreyas Iyer is also struggling to make the cut, despite captaining Punjab Kings to the final of IPL 2025 and being in blazing form with the bat. The 30-year-old was India's top run-getter in their Champions Trophy triumph in Dubai in March, scoring 243 runs in five matches @48.60, including two fifties. He scored 79 off 98 against New Zealand in the group stage, then 45 off 62 against Australia in the semifinal, and 48 off 62 in the final. However, he is competing with big-hitting left-handers, allrounder Shivam Dube and 'finisher' Rinku Singh. Bumrah set to be back, Siraj likely to be rested In encouraging news for Team India, world No. 1 pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who played three Tests in England and was under the scanner for workload management, has conveyed his availability to the selectors for the Asia Cup, and will thus lead India's attack. "Bumrah had a minor knee injury, but will be fit for the Asia Cup. He is supposed to report to the BCCI's CoE on August 30 for a fitness assessment," a source told TOI. London: India's Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna during a training session ahead of the fifth Test cricket match between India and England, in London. (PTI Photo/R Senthilkumar) With the final of the Asia Cup set for September 28 in Dubai and the first Test against West Indies starting on October 2 in Ahmedabad, there's a fair chance that Bumrah will miss at least the first Test of that series. Meanwhile, pacer Mohammed Siraj, who took nine for 190 in the fifth Test at The Oval and finished with 23 wickets in the England series, is likely to be rested from the Asia Cup. He will, however, be available for the home Tests. Apart from Bumrah, left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna -- who won the Purple Cap in IPL 2025 with 25 wickets in 15 matches @19.52 for Gujarat Titans -- and Hardik Pandya will be the other seamers. Prasidh, though, could be competing for a spot with Delhi pacer Harshit Rana. Among spinners, Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav are certainties on the slow UAE wickets, while off-spinning allrounder Washington Sundar is almost guaranteed a spot. Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders' Varun Chakravarthy celebrates with teammates after taking the wicket of Chennai Super Kings' Dewald Brevis during an Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 T20 cricket match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, at the Eden Gardens, in Kolkata, West Bengal. (PTI Photo/Swapan Mahapatra) The Asia Cup will begin with Afghanistan vs Hong Kong in Abu Dhabi on September 9. Clubbed in Group A with arch-rivals Pkistan, UAE and Oman, India will launch their campaign against UAE on September 10 in Dubai. They take on Pkistan on September 14 in the league stage, and most likely again in the Super Four stage on September 21. The final is scheduled for September 28. Jitesh Sharma, a star performer for IPL 2025 champions RCB (261 runs in 15 matches @37.28, SR 176.35, including a top score of 85*), is expected to be picked as the second wicketkeeper in the squad.
