Gangs in Central Jail create challenges for prison officials

Time of India30-04-2025

Nagpur: The prison authorities, like the police department, are forced to be on their toes due to the rivalry among various gangs lodged in Nagpur Central Prison. Sources stated there are around 25 different gangs lodged in Nagpur Central Jail, including 18 from Nagpur. With raging rivalries between most of them, the prison authorities have a huge task at hand to keep them apart.
Following guidelines in the prison manual and various past court orders, the prison department deals with the task of keeping the rivals away. The Nagpur prison has witnessed several gang clashes within the barracks and also attacks on officials trying to intervene in their fights.
Sources said the prison department is mostly left on its own to find each gang's profile and gather information about their rivalries, as there is no existing system in the police department to provide them with such information.
Following the arrests of
Hiranwar gang
members, the prison department recently approached the court seeking permission to shift the goons elsewhere, as their arch-rival Sheikhu gang members are also lodged in the Nagpur Central Prison.

With the court allowing them to take the measure, the prison authorities are now brainstorming among themselves to decide on shifting the Hiranwar gang members to other district jails. Three accused and a woman of the Hiranwar gang are currently lodged in Nagpur Jail.
Sources said the prison authorities have an uphill task every day to avoid a possible gang war or group clash in the jail. "On the basis of the information shared by the gang members, the officials decide how to keep the rivals separated in different barracks," said an official.
The official also stated that the prison department prepares a conduct report and sends it to their higher officials with a proposal to transfer convicts from one prison to another if there is a genuine threat to their lives. "In the case of the under-trials, the court is approached with an application seeking a nod for their transfer to other prisons for security and safety," said the official. The jail authorities are also compelled to guard against clashes at some common meeting points like the interview or mulaquat room, hospital OPD, videoconferencing room, and also sometimes during events or programmes.
Intra-gang rivalries too
The dreaded gangster Pravesh Gupta, who is part of the Sheikhu gang, is learnt to be facing a life threat from a minor of his own group. The minor, rounded up by the cops for his role in cafe owner Avinash Bhusari's murder, is learnt to have vowed to eliminate Gupta.
The Hiranwar gang's first target was Gupta, whom they wanted to bump off on April 14 during Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti rally. He escaped by a whisker. The Hiranwars later found Bhusari an easier target to bump off. Gupta is now the target of his own gang members. An insider said the minor, accused of Bhusari's murder, wanted to eliminate Gupta to avenge his humiliation of his father.

Exclusive: Driver's injury is self-inflicted. This is a false FIR, filed to extort money, says Manish Gupta

An FIR was filed at the Versova police station on June 6 against filmmaker-writer . He is known for writing films like Sarkar and SECTION 375, while directing Rahasya, The Stoneman Murders, 420 IPC and One Friday Night. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Gupta was booked under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for allegedly stabbing his driver Mohammed Lashkar with a kitchen knife. According to Versova police, the incident occurred after an argument over the latter's salary at Gupta's Andheri (west) office at 8.30pm on June 5. According to a report in TOI, Lashkar, who served as Gupta's driver for three years until his May 30 termination, said his Rs 23,000 salary remained outstanding. His statement reads: "There has been instances when the film director used to indulge in fight whenever I asked for my salary which was never paid on time. This time he removed me from the job when I asked for my April month's salary which was yet to be paid." Gupta has categorically dismissed the allegations. In an exclusive interview with Bombay Times, he said, 'It's a false FIR, filed with an intent of extorting money, systematically played out under the guidance of a criminal lawyer.' He added, 'We are going to initiate criminal proceedings against Lashkar and put him behind bars. I want to expose these false FIRs racket.' Ahead of narrating the incident, Gupta shared a CCTV footage of the driver leaving the building premises (his back facing the camera) with Bombay Times and documents that reveal his advance salary claim to Lashkar as well as the driver's speeding tickets for rash driving. Gupta explained, 'He has been working for me for three years. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On June 5, around 8.30 pm in my office, he started this bawaal to provoke me. It was very illogical. He wanted to quit my job. I had paid him an advance (Rs 41,500), which was much more than his monthly salary. This has been acknowledged by him on paper. I told him, if you're quitting, obviously the advance is going to be deducted from your salary. That didn't go down well with him, and this was his way of extorting money from me. I asked him to drop my car keys and leave. He left in a lift and while exiting the lift, held his hand over his stomach as if he was covering a wound, no blood stain is visible in the CCTV footage. The other footage which captures him walking away, shows how normal he seems while walking away. I am sure he went to his people, inflicted a harmless injury to himself and then went to the cops at 2 am. Why didn't he go to the cops directly? He tried to create this chain of events. When the cops came over to my office the next day to investigate, they also called him, he's walking, holding his stomach, taking the support of some other guy, and he's walking half a step at a time. His actions looked staged. The cops didn't find any kitchen knife because I don't have a kitchen in my office. You just get tea, coffee, biscuits. He needed the money badly for his house and daughter's education and on humanitarian grounds, I gave him the advance, and this is how he repays me.' Gupta concludes, 'I have given my statement to the police. The evidence that I showed you, has also been given to the police. In a nutshell, this is a false FIR, filed with an intention of extorting money. It has been systematically played out under guidance of a criminal lawyer. My lawyer is , and we are going to initiate criminal proceedings against this person. The CCTV footage of seconds after the incident clearly shows he is walking very normally, very casually and not at all like a person who has been attacked with a knife as he is claiming. It is very clear evidence of his lying, and he has inflicted this injury later on himself in order to build some sort of circumstance to file a false FIR. I want to expose this false FIRs racket. '

How ICICI Bank RM stole Rs 4.6 cr from customers - and what you must learn

In a shocking case of internal bank fraud, an ex-ICICI Bank relationship manager in Kota, Rajasthan, has been arrested for stealing Rs 4.58 crore from over 110 customer accounts — many of them senior citizens — over a period of nearly three years. The fraud, which went undetected for months, highlights the urgent need for personal finance vigilance, especially in the digital banking era. Such was the extent of her obsession with stock market trading that the 26-year-old Sakhi Gupta went to shocking lengths — allegedly siphoning off Rs 4.58 crore from unsuspecting customers, including even her own father-in-law. The funds were reportedly diverted into high-risk futures and options (F&O) trading, in a desperate bid to profit from speculative market movements. According to police, Gupta has been pilfering from more that 110 accounts belonging to 41 customers for around two years at the Kota branch. She allegedly invested this amount in the stock market and lost the majority of it. How did the fraud occur? According to police and internal bank investigations, the accused, Sakshi Gupta, misused her access to break customer FDs prematurely, create overdrafts, sanction loans, and reroute funds to her personal trading accounts. She allegedly: Broke 31 FDs worth Rs 1.34 crore without informing customers. By changing mobile numbers to relatives' lines, she prevented customers from receiving alerts and hiding transactions Stolen money was routed through a 'pool account' (one elderly customer's account with over ₹3 crore) before being transferred to her demat/trading accounts. All ₹4.58 crore were invested in F&O trades via apps like Zerodha and ICICI Direct, but she reportedly lost the entire amount How the scam unfolded: According to the police investigation, the relationship manager broke fixed deposits (FDs) prematurely, created overdraft facilities, and even took personal loans in the names of unsuspecting customers — all without their consent or knowledge. The fraudulent transactions spanned over months and were cleverly hidden using manipulated entries in the bank's internal systems. She exploited her access to ICICI Bank's Insta Kiosk and digital banking channels to carry out these unauthorized transactions, betraying the trust of both the bank and its customers. What's more worrying: she reportedly manipulated entries in ICICI Bank's internal software to cover her tracks, making it difficult for both customers and internal auditors to detect any red flags. The police also alleged that Gupta misused debit cards, PINs, and OTPs for these transactions, and even activated overdraft facilities on 40 accounts without consent. In addition to this, she permanently closed fixed deposits of 31 customers and funneled over Rs. 1.34 crore, while also taking a personal loan of Rs. 3.40 lakh. What Is a pool account, and why it matters? A pool account is typically used to consolidate funds from various sources. In this fraud: She collected money from broken FDs, overdrafts, and fake loans into one account. From there, funds were easily routed to her personal investment accounts. This minimized red flags, since transactions were less scattered and easier to manage. By centralizing transactions, she avoided the complexity and detection risks associated with moving money through 40+ accounts. Who were the victims? Most of the victims were elderly customers, many of whom relied on FDs as a source of post-retirement income. They remained unaware as alerts were rerouted and their bank accounts tampered with behind the scenes. A customer complaint about a missing FD triggered an internal audit by ICICI, leading to a branch manager filing an FIR on February 18, 2023, and her arrest in May 2025. What did ICICI Bank do? ICICI Bank filed an FIR and confirmed that all affected customers have been compensated. The bank has since strengthened internal controls, but the incident raises serious questions about employee oversight and customer protection. An ICICI Bank spokesperson, in a press note, said that the interest of costumes is most important and upon discovering the activities the bank immediately filed an FIR. "We have a zero-tolerance policy against any fraudulent activity,' they said, adding that the employee has been suspended and genuine claims of impacted customers have been settled. Key red flags: FDs were closed without OTPs being triggered. No transaction alerts were received by customers due to outdated contact details. Customers only realized something was wrong after significant sums were gone What this means for you? If you're a bank customer: Check your alerts: Ensure your mobile number and email are updated with your bank to receive all transaction notifications. Monitor FD and loan activity: Unexpected closure of FDs or creation of overdrafts should raise red flags. Review bank statements regularly, especially if you're a senior citizen or non-tech-savvy. Immediately report any suspicious changes (like mobile number alterations or OTP behavior) to your bank's fraud cell.

FIR against MLA's daughter & three others for thrashing condo woman in Noida

Noida: An FIR was registered against four women, including the daughter of local MLA Tejpal Nagar, for allegedly storming into a resident's flat in Purvanchal Heights in Zeta-1 and assaulting her and her daughters following a spat over a minor car collision inside the society on Saturday evening. The incident — captured on CCTV cameras and its videos circulated widely on social media — unfolded when the cars of Jayshree Gupta and Rekha Bhati scraped past each other. According to Gupta, she was returning from the AVJ Heights market when the minor collision happened, but both residents returned to their flats after a brief exchange. A few hours later — around 8pm — Rekha Bhati, the MLA's daughter Priyanka Nagar, Poonam Bhati and an unidentified woman barged into Gupta's flat. The group allegedly rained blows on her and even attacked her daughters when they tried to intervene. A video clip recorded in one of the tower's CCTV cameras shows Gupta being dragged around by the hair and punched repeatedly. The victim, who suffered head and eye injuries, reached the local police station bleeding and underwent a medical examination around midnight. After she lodged a complaint, an FIR was registered against Priyanka Nagar and the others under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), and 333 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault, or wrongful restraint) of BNS. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Rekha Bhati countered with a police complaint, accusing Gupta of deliberately damaging her car. "We've registered a case and are examining footage from the society's cameras. The investigation will consider all aspects. We will take into account what each of them has to say," said BS Veer, assistant commissioner of police, central Noida. MLA Tejpal Nagar told TOI his daughter was not involved in any attack. "This incident is politically motivated. It's a conspiracy orchestrated by my opponents, who want to tarnish my image by making false allegations. The truth will come out after investigation," he said. Officials in the society, however, linked the incident with existing tension between two parties over AOA elections. "Some residents have raised concerns about management issues in the society. We are planning to review all evidence, such as neighbours' accounts and CCTV footage, as part of our own inquiry," an official said.
