Transformation efforts on Gaya Island villages lauded
KOTA KINABALU (July2): A colourful transformation is underway on Gaya Island as water villages embark on a community-driven journey to turn their homes into vibrant tourism attractions.
Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai commended the Meraki Daat Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, for actively involving Gaya Island residents in transforming their living spaces into potential community tourism attractions.
This follows Joniston's first meeting with the Meraki Daat Initiative in 2022, where he encouraged the group to incorporate a community-based tourism approach into their project to ensure greater local involvement and shared economic benefits.
Joniston, who is chairs the Sabah Tourism Board, said such commitment aligns with the state's vision to promote sustainable tourism, particularly through community-based attractions that showcase Sabah's unique identity.
On Tuesday, the Meraki Daat Initiative team, led by its president, Michelle De La Harpe, briefed Joniston on the progress of their ongoing Project Picasso, which aims to revitalise water villages and turn them into Instagram-worthy tourist spots.
The project focuses on creatively painting stilt houses and working closely with the Sabah Tourism Board to promote these water village destinations.
In June, the Sabah Tourism Board conducted a workshop that brought together five water villages on Gaya Island namely Lok Urai, Torong Logong, Lobong, Kesuapan, and Kampung Pondoh.
Joniston was briefed that these villages are now working towards formal registration to form Community-Based Tourism Gaya Island.
'This is a positive step forward. Pulau Gaya is a unique settlement with its own story to tell.
'Developing community-based tourism on the island will create value for the villagers, especially given its proximity to the city centre.
'However, it is crucial to foster a cleaner, safer and more sustainable tourism environment. Local participation and ownership are key to this effort,' he said.
During the meeting, Joniston launched the 2025 Project Picasso Art Competition themed Ocean Creatures, as part of the initiative to encourage creative community participation to further beautify their villages.
Michelle said the goal includes to transform public spaces into vibrant community-owned tourism attractions, adding the project combines youth development, art and environmental sustainability.
'We are currently building a 200-metre pathway towards the volleyball court using eco-bricks, made from recycled plastic waste. This innovation won the United Nations Development Programme's Island Waste Innovation Challenge last year,' she said.
The art competition runs from June 30 to July 31, 2025. The judging period is scheduled for August 1–7, followed by site painting from August 20–27, and the official opening and mural launch on August 31.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The country's financial management must be carried out prudently and with discipline, in line with the spirit of the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act 2023 (FRA), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He stressed on this while chairing the Fiscal Policy Committee (FPC) meeting, which is an important platform for drafting clear fiscal policies and setting the direction of the country's economy. He said the Madani Government needs to continue to find a balance between efforts to maintain the momentum of economic growth and ensuring the country's fiscal position remains sustainable, especially in the volatile global economic environment. 'Although the world is still grappling with uncertainty, the national economy remains strong with a growth rate of 4.4 per cent for the first half of 2025. 'The unemployment rate has also dropped to three per cent, the lowest in 10 years,' the prime minister said in a post on his Facebook page yesterday. He added that the government has successfully reduced the fiscal deficit from 5.5 per cent in 2022 to 4.1 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2024, an achievement that demonstrates its commitment to responsible fiscal management. Meanwhile, in a separate statement following the FPC meeting yesterday, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) said as the Madani Government embarks on the 13th Malaysia Plan, fiscal space must be optimised to deliver public investments that materially transform the economy (Raise the Ceiling) and improve the rakyat's quality of life (Raise the Floor). In 2025, Malaysia's economy is expected to grow between 4.0 per cent and 4.8 per cent, underpinned by strong domestic demand, moderate inflation and a stable labour market. 'The FPC meeting today reaffirmed the government's commitment to reducing the 3.8 per cent fiscal deficit target for 2025 and subsequently achieving a deficit of three per cent or below in the medium term, in line with the FRA commitment,' said Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister. The session also serves as an important step in setting the government's fiscal trajectory ahead of the forthcoming Budget 2026, scheduled to be tabled on October 10, 2025. Pursuant to the provisions of the FRA, the MoF said the Madani Government is undertaking the Medium-Term Revenue Strategy (MTRS) to broaden the revenue base and establish a more progressive tax system, while strengthening compliance with international best practices. 'Moving forward, priority will be placed on addressing leakages and enhancing efficiency through measures such as the phased implementation of the e-invoicing system. Natural resources minister rejects calls for centralised rare earth body, citing constitutional challenges and state objections
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has no plans to establish a centralised body to regulate Malaysia's rare earth elements (REE) industry, citing constitutional provisions and objections from state governments. Acting Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said several states had raised concerns during engagement sessions, viewing the proposal as an attempt to nationalise state-owned mineral resources. 'Petroleum resources outside state waters are managed differently from land matters, which fall under state jurisdiction,' he told the Dewan Rakyat when winding up the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) debate for his ministry today. He cited the Federal Constitution's Ninth Schedule (State List), which gives states authority over mining permits, leases and licences. As such, any move to centralise REE regulation would require in-depth study and close consultation with all state governments to safeguard their rights. Johari also dismissed claims that Malaysia had offered to supply REE, raw or otherwise, exclusively to the United States as leverage in trade tariff talks. 'This was already clarified by the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister (Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz) on Aug 7. The tariff discussions did not involve any commitment to supply REE,' he said. On negotiations with China, Johari said discussions are currently focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation to develop Malaysia's REE industry across the full value chain, including the setting up of processing plants. 'It's still early and China wants to see if our REE can be converted into the downstream products they need. No formal talks are underway regarding any buyback of processed REE,' he said. — Bernama

Sabah culture takes the stage in Singapore to inspire future visits

SINGAPORE (Aug 17): The sights and sounds of Sabah took centre stage at Marina Square on Saturday, as the Sabah Fest Singapore Edition 2025 brought North Borneo's culture to life through music, dance, food and heritage. Visitors were treated to traditional performances, food products, and craft showcases that highlighted Sabah's diverse ethnic traditions. For Sabahans living in Singapore, it was a moment to reconnect with their roots, while Singaporeans had the opportunity to discover the state's cultural richness for the first time. The event was jointly launched by Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai and Malaysian High Commissioner to Singapore Dato' Indera Azfar Mohd Mustafa. In his speech, Joniston called on the Sabah community abroad to play a role in promoting Sabah as a preferred travel destination and strengthening the state's visibility internationally. 'Singapore's position as a regional hub, the most important gateway for international travellers, offers Sabah a strong advantage. 'With direct flights between Singapore and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah is more accessible than ever, and we want to leverage this connectivity to attract more visitors to explore Sabah,' he said, adding that more than 13,000 Singaporeans visited Sabah between January and May this year. Joniston, who is also chairman of Sabah Tourism Board, said the event was a perfect introduction for first-time visitors as Sabah prepares for Visit Malaysia 2026 with its own Explore Sabah campaign. He invited both Singaporeans and international travellers to experience Sabah first-hand by visiting Sabah Fest 2025 in Kota Kinabalu next month (Aug 30 – Sept 30).
