Disney set to close Tom Sawyer Island and the famed Riverboat to make way for new attractions

Independent04-06-2025
Disney World will close Tom Sawyer Island and its famed Liberty Square Riverboat to make way for new attractions.
Millions of guests visit the Orlando resort a year, with the Magic Kingdom the most popular of its four parks.
Located in Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, Tom Sawyer Island allows guests to experience a 'secret rustic hideaway inspired by the stories of Mark Twain,' according to the resort's website.
Tom Sawyer Island has been a staple at Disney World, first opening in 1973, according to D23, the official Disney fan club.
To reach the attraction, visitors glide through the Rivers of America on a log raft. But from July 7, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will permanently close, for Disney to build Piston Peak National Park, which it called 'the largest expansion in history at Magic Kingdom.'
To make way for the Cars -themed expansion, Disney will also be getting rid of the Liberty Square Riverboat. The Riverboat has allowed guests to cruise down the Rivers of America in an 'authentic steam-powered paddle wheeler,' according to the resort's website.
Park-goers for decades have hopped on the Riverboat at Liberty Square in Magic Kingdom to enjoy a half-mile tour around Tom Sawyer Island. Sights included 'the early days of the American frontier,' including Harper's Mill, Fort Langhorn and Wilson's Cave Inn.
Disney's 'imagineers' will build Piston Peak National Park, an expansion inspired by the Rocky Mountains and the 'history and iconic sights of the American Frontier and its national parks,' the company announced in a blog post on Tuesday.
'Imagine an awe-inspiring wilderness filled with towering trees, snowcapped mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, roaring rivers and impressive geysers,' Disney said.
The park will be set within the universe of Disney and Pixar's Cars trilogy and incorporate so-called 'Parkitecture,' which Disney said was 'developed by the National Park Service to create structures that harmonize with the natural environment.'
Guests will be able to explore the visitor lodge, Ranger HQ, trails and other attractions once construction is complete. Disney has not yet announced a date for when it expects to reveal the new attractions.

'Incredible' Disney+ series based on iconic sci-fi horror movie gets outstanding Rotten Tomatoes score

A prequel series to a beloved horror franchise has just begun on Disney+ A prequel to the legendary Alien franchise has finally launched today. ‌ Alien: Earth, set in 2120, takes place two years prior to the events of the iconic 1979 film Alien, which starred Sigourney Weaver and sparked a nine-film series. ‌ The original film boasts an impressive 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and so far the new series has garnered the exact same score. ‌ The chilling sci-fi horror series features Sydney Chandler as Wendy and Timothy Olyphant as Kirsh. Alien: Earth was brought to life by Noah Hawley, the creative force behind the FX series Fargo and Legion, with Ridley Scott, director of the original Alien, serving as executive producer. The first two episodes premiered today (Wednesday, 13th August) on Disney+, with new episodes releasing each week. The plot follows Wendy and a team of tactical soldiers known as The Lost Boys who stumble upon a shocking discovery after the spacecraft, the Maginot, crash-lands on Earth, bringing them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat. The series experienced significant delays due to Disney's takeover of Fox and the strikes in 2023. It took seven long years for the series to transition from idea to screen. Production designer Andy Nicholson confessed to the LA Times, "It was a huge responsibility and I didn't want to mess up," adding, "There's a history for the fans. You can't mess up the Easter eggs. There are specific things you can't get wrong because you'll just lose people." ‌ The series is peppered with references and nods to the story of Peter Pan, although the Disney connection wasn't intentional, and it also boasts retrofuturistic set pieces, handcrafted costumes, and a meticulously chosen score. ‌ Fans of the original film franchise will be thrilled to hear that the iconic Xenomorph, which doesn't make an appearance in the first film until about an hour in, will take centre stage in the prequel series. "We show more of the Xenomorph than everybody else has shown," reveals director Dana Gonzales. "Later on, you realize why we do that; it doesn't just become a character that's coming out of a dark hole. There's this point where it's going to be much more present. Finding that language of how to get there, it starts with the first episode of giving fans what they hope to be tuning in for." The latest addition to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, was released in 2024 and bridges the gap between the events of the first two films.

Crypto exchange Bullish's shares set to more than double in debut

Aug 13 (Reuters) - Bullish's (BLSH.N), opens new tab shares were indicated to open at more than double their initial public offering price on Wednesday, signaling growing investor confidence in the sector and boosting prospects for future U.S. listings by other digital asset firms. If the Peter Thiel-backed crypto exchange starts to trade at the last indicated range of $85 to $88 on the NYSE, it could potentially value the company at more than $12.86 billion. The parent of crypto news website CoinDesk raised $1.11 billion in an IPO priced at $37 apiece, valuing it at $5.4 billion, as mainstream crypto adoption accelerates in a sector that recently surpassed $4 trillion in value. "Bullish came out with an attractive initial valuation, and investors responded by aggressively bidding it up during the pre-IPO process," said Jeff Zell, senior research analyst at IPO Boutique. A string of regulatory wins under a pro-crypto White House, corporate treasury adoption, and ETF inflows have prompted investors to embrace the once-scorned digital asset class, driving bellwether bitcoin to record highs. Exchange operator Gemini and asset manager Grayscale are also among the crypto firms that have confidentially filed to go public. "We've gone public today, and there's a slew of others that are going to follow us, and I think that is net beneficial, because it gives people more options in terms of how they access this asset class," Bullish President Chris Tyrer told Reuters in an interview. Bullish is close to concluding a two-year process to obtain a virtual currency license known as a "BitLicense" in New York, which would allow the company to operate in the state, Tyrer said. The BitLicense requires companies to comply with requirements related to know-your-customer, anti-money laundering and capital. Bullish plans to convert a significant portion of the IPO proceeds to stablecoins — a slice of the crypto space that has boomed since U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Genius Act, creating a regulatory regime for the dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies. Bullish's debut marks a rare U.S. listing by a crypto exchange, joining larger retail-focused rival Coinbase (COIN.O), opens new tab, which became the first crypto player to be included in the benchmark S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab index in May. Founded in 2020, Bullish targets institutional clients, whose crypto holdings are expected to rise as a new White House order aims to allow alternative investments in 401(k) retirement plans. "A pure institutional strategy positions Bullish for more stable, recurring revenue than exchanges reliant on retail volumes, which tend to be cyclical and sentiment-driven," said Michael Hall, co-chief investment officer and founding partner at Nickel Digital Asset Management. Bullish CEO Tom Farley was previously the president of NYSE. "For a sector still overcoming reputational headwinds, that kind of leadership experience can be a differentiator in securing institutional mandates," Hall said.

Machine Gun Kelly theorizes he has ALIEN lineage after mother revealed she may have been abducted by UFO

Machine Gun Kelly suspects he may have an extraterrestrial background. The rapper, 35, revealed he has considered the possibility that he may have alien lineage thanks to several mysteries in his life, including his body's ability to quickly recover from injuries. Adding fuel to the theory, MGK says his mother suspects she may have been abducted by a UFO at one point - which may explain for the rapper's quirks. The can of worms was opened after MGK - real name Colson Baker - admitted he didn't know his true age during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. 'It's a weird thing, dude, I don't know if my age, I don't know if it exists,' he said. 'Wow! You have a Mariah Carey connection to your age? Which is, it's very fluid.' Host Andy Cohen asked. 'I don't know many facts about my life, so I don't know, I'm starting to just be like, like my skin, like if it rips open, it heals really quick,' he said. 'How?' an intrigued Andy asked. 'There's just things where I'm starting to be like, "Who's my dad?"' MGK continued. 'Do you think that you could be like otherworld?' Andy asked. 'I've asked my mom, I said, "Any period of time you went like missing, off Earth?... Ever a tall, slender creature?"' he said. 'She told me she felt like she got abducted at one point.' 'So there may be something to this!' Andy said. 'No, there really is!' he said. 'I'm bad at talking, I shouldn't have came on a talk show.' MGK has had a strained relationship with his parents. The rapper was born in Houston to missionary parents, but his mom left home when he was young for another man. The musician became estranged from his mother, but they reconnected in 2022. MGK also endured a difficult relationship with his father for many years. His dad sadly passed away in 2020. The speculation about his heritage wasn't all MGK discussed on the show. The Beyond The Lights actor also had a dramatic three-word response to rumors he may have struck up a romance with Sydney Sweeney. Earlier this year the duo were seen getting close at the star-studded opening of the Palm Tree Beach Club at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The rapper was asked about the speculation during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live - and it was clear he didn't want to discuss the Euphoria star, 27. Viewer 'Kyle P.' submitted a question asking MGK about the matter, and the actor did not shy away from telling the curious fan exactly how he felt about the topic. 'MGK, Kyle P. wants to know if there's any truth you and Sydney Sweeney were more than just friends?' Host Andy Cohen, 57, asked, reading the viewer-submitted question. 'Kyle P., shut up dude,' MGK said, garnering laughter from the studio. The rapper sparked romance rumors earlier this year after they were seen chatting at the opening of the Palm Tree Beach Club at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas; Sydney pictured in Los Angeles earlier this month MGK and Sydney have known each other since starring together in the 2021 film Downfalls High, which MGK also directed. But in May, the pair looked extra chummy as they spoke with one another at the Las Vegas party. At the time, MGK had recently split from Megan Fox, with the couple welcoming their first child together two months prior (MGK also has a daughter with ex Emma Cannon and Megan has three kids with ex Brian Austin Green). In exclusive Daily Mail video, Kelly and Sweeney were seen getting close and chatting. They were also seen sharing a fierce embrace in photos obtained by Page Six. Not only that, but they made appearances in one another's social media accounts as they posted about the bash. Sydney appeared in a silly selfie MGK posted that also included Patrick Schwarzenegger and hairstylist Glen Oropeza. The selfie was one of several MGK included in a post that he captioned, 'stop what you're doing these pictures are v important.' The Euphoria star also posted the results of a snap she took with MGK and the White Lotus star. Sydney's love life has been making headlines ever since her breakup with longtime fiancé Jonathan Davino. The actress split from Jonathan earlier this year in January, but news of the separation didn't come to light until March.
