Size assembles four-pronged assault on Ka Ying Rising: ‘it's hard to doubt him'

The John Size-trained Wunderbar is the only galloper to finish in front of superstar sprinter Ka Ying Rising but the master handler hopes one of his stablemates can emulate the feat in Sunday's Group One Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (1,400m).
Size saddles up half of the gallopers aiming to prevent Ka Ying Rising winning his 10th straight race and third Group One, with Helios Express out to turn the tables after four consecutive placings behind David Hayes' speed machine.
Howdeepisyourlove also has multiple placings behind Ka Ying Rising this term, while Beauty Eternal and Red Lion step down in trip for the season's only 1,400m Group One.
'Obviously we don't get many opportunities to show their 1,400m form – there's only one a year at Group One level and we don't get a lot of visitors for this race,' said Size of the Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup, which he has won with Electronic Unicorn (2004), Contentment (2016) and Waikuku (2021). — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) December 8, 2024
'But's it's always an interesting contest and we've got 1,600m horses and 1,200m horses coming together, which mixes it up a little bit.'
While Ka Ying Rising will race over further than 1,200m for the first time, Beauty Eternal is a Group Three winner over 1,400m as well as a Group One victor at a mile and Helios Express snared the Classic Mile and Classic Cup (1,800m) last season.
'Helios Express looks normal. He's trained well and he's strong. The 1,400m might help him out a little bit,' said Size.
'We might get a change in the result, you never know, but the favourite has such a high rating that it's hard to doubt him. It should carry him through.
'Beauty Eternal is training well and I'm not worried about his form. He seems to be in excellent health and condition. The horse is happy.
'The day he won his Group One [in the last year's Champions Mile] it was a rain-affected track, which he might be missing this weekend, but in the past couple of weeks the grass has come on really well on the course proper and it should have bit of cushion in it.
'Howdeepisyourlove has been in very good shape. He's been racing consistently, he does everything right and he runs the same race every time.
'Red Lion is probably a bit over an overachiever. It would be fair to say he's done more than what we expected of him and his honesty will see him through. He's going to give a good account of himself, as usual.'
While Helios Express will be ridden by regular jockey Hugh Bowman, there's been plenty of shuffling among Size's other runners and the favourite.
Ka Ying Rising will be ridden by Karis Teetan in the absence of the injured Zac Purton and Andrea Atzeni takes the reins from the Australian aboard Beauty Eternal, while Red Lion will be partnered by Alexis Badel for the first time this season.
Also among the rotations is the booking of Ben Thompson to replace James McDonald aboard Howdeepisyourlove, with the New Zealander not making it back from Saudi Arabia in time after riding Romantic Warrior in the Group One Saudi Cup (1,800m).
McDonald is expected to get to Sha Tin in time to partner Voyage Bubble in the Group One Gold Cup (2,000m), however, with the Size-trained Ensued among the Ricky Yiu Poon-fai-trained galloper's nine opponents.

Master trainer Aidan O'Brien holds aces in France and Germany's simulcast Group Ones on Sunday
Aidan O'Brien is one again one of the main players in a European Group One. Photo: Kenneth Chan Aidan O'Brien is hunting down his third Group One Prix Rothschild (1,600m) at Deauville on Sunday and looks to hold the aces with his progressive three-year-old January. The top trainer is a force wherever he sends runners in Europe and January, who has been threatening to break her Group One duck, will be ridden by French ace Christophe Soumillon. She has shown improved form this season, building on a modest reappearance by finishing second in the Group One Coronation Stakes (1,600m) at Royal Ascot before filling the same position in the Group One Falmouth Stakes (1,600m) at Newmarket. Like many of O'Brien's horses, she has improved steadily with age and experience, and O'Brien is hoping for further progress. 🔵 Cinderella's Dream - back in business with @Tattersalls1766 Falmouth Stakes glory — Racing TV (@RacingTV) July 11, 2025 'A mile is really her trip. We're getting closer step by step. It's always a little frustrating to come so close, but she ran very well. She's improving, and we're on the right path,' said O'Brien after her Falmouth run. The French challenge is a strong one too, with the now Francis-Henri Graffard-trained Matilda leading the charge under Maxime Guyon. She was previously trained by Yasmin Almenrader in Germany and was building into a really smart operator, most recently winning the Group Two German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne against the boys by six and a half lengths. The Graffard team also runs Mandanaba, who was last seen finishing second in the Group One Prix de Diane (2,000m) and is set to be suited by the drop back to the mile. The British raiding party is led by the Karl Burke-trained Fallen Angel, who was a Group One winner in Ireland last year. A fine performance from the British runner Fallen Angel in the Group 1 @MoyglareStud Stakes, earning a second winner of a memorable weekend for @karl_burke, Danny Tudhope and @ClipperPlc #IrishChampionsFestival — The Curragh Racecourse (@curraghrace) September 10, 2023 Her most recent run saw her finish third in the Group Two Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (1,600m) at Royal Ascot and her trainer is optimistic a big run. 'Even though we're keen to try her over 2,000 metres, we know that on softer ground, she has enough speed to run very well over the mile,' Burke said. There is also simulcast action in Germany from Düsseldorf, with the feature being the Group One Preis der Diana (2,200m). O'Brien once again has a big chance with the improving Group Two Ribblesdale Stakes (2,400m) winner Garden Of Eden, though she has drawn wide under Ryan Moore. Other big chances include the Charlie Appleby-trained Spirited Style, a Listed winner last time out, and the home team's Lady Charlotte, who was unbeaten before her fair run in the Group One Deutsches Derby (2,400m) last month.

Whirl powers through Goodwood thunderstorm to ease away with the Nassau Stakes
Ryan Moore and Aidan O'Brien teamed up for more Group One glory. Photo: Reuters Aidan O'Brien's rising star made light work of difficult conditions on the third day of the elite festival Whirl made quick work of torrential conditions at Glorious Goodwood to win the Group One Nassau Stakes (2,000m) in impressive fashion on Wednesday. Biblical rain, thanks to a heavy thunderstorm, saw racegoers cowering indoors before the race, and the Nassau itself was delayed for 10 minutes with lightning in the area. None of that – including a flag start due to safety concerns – fazed Aidan O'Brien's $1.7 favourite, who went straight to the lead under Ryan Moore and was never seriously challenged. The race was billed as a clash between Whirl and the Andrew Balding-trained See The Fire, but that battle never materialised after the latter blew the flag start and could only finish third. 'She's understated – that's just her nature. She's been coming along in the shadows and nothing seems to bother her,' O'Brien told Racing Post. 'She's hardy and keeps turning up. She's pretty unusual and has an unbelievable mind. She didn't even know she'd had a race.' Clive Cox's debut winner ran a brilliant race to finish third in the Group Two Coventry Stakes (1,400m) at Royal Ascot and took another step forward to record a facile all-the-way two-length success up the stand's rail. 'I was worried about soft ground because he's got such a beautiful action on a nice surface. He's very quick and did that really well,' Cox told Racing TV. 'I think he's very gifted and he's a proper six-furlong horse so usual plans from here, Middle Park will be the end goal.'

HK racing off-season update: David Probert joins the ranks as 2025-26 fixture list is revealed
Keagan de Melo was almost on target at Group One level over the weekend. Photo: Kenneth Chan. British jockey David Probert will join the Hong Kong talent pool next season after being confirmed on a part-season Club Jockey's licence. The 36-year-old's licence will run from July 17 to February 17 2026, both dates inclusive, and will join fellow British rider Richard Kingscote on the roster for next campaign. Probert, best known for his partnership with trainer Andrew Balding down the years, is yet to win a Group One race but has snared 12 races at Group Two level, most recently the Summer Mile Stakes (1,600m) at Ascot in July on Never So Brave for Balding. 'It's about improving myself as a rider and as a person, giving myself a little bit of space to see what I want to do moving forward. I want to achieve something I probably can't in the UK,' Probert told the Racing Post. David Probert wins the 2014 Britannia Stakes on Born in Bombay Photo: He has come close on a plethora of occasions at the top level, including a second-place finish in the 2018 Group One 2,000 Guineas (1,600m) on 50-1 outsider Tip Two Win for trainer Roger Teal. Probert also filled out the same position on another roughie, 150-1 shot Hoo Ya Mal, in the 2022 Derby (2,400m) at Epsom. The race was won by Desert Crown, ridden by Kingscote for legendary trainer Sir Michael Stoute. His best season to date came in 2021, where he rode 169 winners from 1,236 rides. He has breached the century mark on eight occasions, including in the last four years.
