GatesAir unveils DAB/DAB+ transmitter architecture Ahead of IBC
Debuting at IBC, GatesAir's upgraded DAB/DAB+ transmitter architecture is designed to deliver efficiency levels exceeding 50% in certain scenarios. GatesAir has released a modernised transmitter infrastructure for its entire DAB/DAB+ product line. Set to debut at IBC2025 next month, the updated architecture boosts efficiency levels by 50% or more, due to innovations such as adjustable-voltage power supplies designed to reduce power consumption. The upgrade places GatesAir among the top performers in DAB/DAB+ transmission efficiency, building on its established track record in UHF television and FM radio. The company, which initiated the high-efficiency transmitter movement nearly two decades ago with its PowerSmart architecture, has integrated the latest transistor technology and smart software algorithms to significantly enhance performance. These advancements allow low- to medium-power DAB/DAB+ transmitters to achieve efficiencies of 50% or higher. Raymond Miklius, Vice President of Technology at GatesAir, said: 'DAB and DAB+ frequencies can carry up to 18 channels, and our new high-efficiency architecture for five transmitter lines provides our customers with an adjustable palette to optimise bitrates, voltages and more. We are applying our industry-leading innovations in modulation ratios and energy efficiency to deliver real cost and labor savings for digital radio broadcasters and network operators.' The new architecture spans several transmitter lines, including VAXT, VAX-OP and PMTX-1 outdoor models, covering both air-cooled units from 25 watts and liquid-cooled versions up to 10kW. It also optimises EDI connectivity for enterprise-level distribution, incorporating GatesAir's Intraplex ultra-low-latency IP transport for large DAB networks. This system uses the company's IPConnect technology to transport EDI streams via the SRT protocol, replacing traditional ETI or satellite methods, while Dynamic Stream Splicing (DSS) software ensures network path redundancy and enhanced stream resilience. Beyond DAB/DAB+, GatesAir is also showcasing its completed Flexiva FM transmitter range, which now includes a newly launched 3.5kW model. The seven-model lineup, ranging from 50 watts to 10kW, delivers FM transmission efficiencies of 76 percent or higher. GatesAir will present its latest DAB+ high-efficiency transmitters, Intraplex IP transport solutions and Flexiva FM transmitters during IBC2025, taking place September 12–15 at the RAI Amsterdam.
