Amid rising mental health challenges such as stress, burnout, and attention deficits, a new study by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi showed that Indian classical ragas can potentially enhance levels of attention, emotional regulation, and mental stability.
The study, conducted in collaboration with IIT Kanpur, provides scientific validation for music as a therapeutic tool: one that is culturally resonant and non-invasive.
The research, which involved 40 participants exposed to the ragas, utilised advanced electroencephalogram (EEG) microstate analysis - a real-time brain-mapping technique that captures momentary yet significant patterns of neural activity.
The findings, published in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, suggests that listening to Raga Darbari - known for its soothing and uplifting qualities -- before exams or important meetings may improve focus, while Raga Jogiya - a melancholic melody - could help manage emotional overwhelm or grief.
The shifts observed in neural activity were not random, said first author Dr. Ashish Gupta, Assistant Professor, IIT Mandi.
'The data showed repeatable, consistent transitions after exposure to the ragas, suggesting Indian classical music can serve as a powerful tool for mental wellness. The EEG data consistently showed how music exposure, compared to silence, shifted the brain into more stable and functional patterns,' added Gupta.
The EEG test employed small metal electrodes, known as 'microstates', which often last only a few milliseconds and represent the brain's transient modes of operation, such as attention, emotional engagement, or mind-wandering.
Brain cells communicate through electrical impulses, and this activity is represented as wavy lines on an EEG recording.
The research revealed that Raga Darbari and Raga Jogiya can fundamentally alter EEG microstates, and show fleeting but powerful neural patterns that reflect attention, emotion, and cognitive processing.
'EEG microstates offer a window into how the brain operates moment, attention, mind-wandering, or emotional engagement. What we found was that Ragas don't just evoke feelings, they actually reprogramme the brain in real time, it is remarkable to see how these ancient melodies consistently guide the brain into more stable and focused patterns,' said Prof Laxmidhar Behera, Director, IIT Mandi.
The study also observed an overall increase in brain stability across participants, with microstates becoming longer and more grounded, indicating a calmer, more focused mind.

Speaking at a seminar on fugitive emissions organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Vaidya emphasised the critical importance of raw materials and their processes in the industry. Speaking at the inaugural session, Vaidya said, "Fugitive emission is a well-known issue, which can be best managed when you understand your processes and raw materials. Air pollution and emissions started to get attention after the Bhopal gas tragedy." He added that the emission doesn't need to come from a specific industry, "it can originate either from a labour-intensive industry or the automated industry as well". Discussing the main source of fugitive emissions, Vaidya said that leaks in the pumps of processing machines lead to localised gas contamination, which can result in fatal or deadly accidents. "This type of leak is difficult to detect, and the cause behind it is not easily identified; therefore, ensuring machinery functions properly is crucial to reducing emissions," he said. "The concentration of emissions is very harmful, as sometimes it can be fatal and sometimes life-threatening, and therefore, managing fugitive emissions is very important," he said. He emphasized that the main causes of fugitive emissions are twofold: first, the storage of liquid chemicals; and second, during operations like filling and emptying tanks, which create pressure and cause evaporation, leading to emissions. Later, entrepreneur and environmentalist Ashish Kaswa, in a panel discussion on 'Evolving global and Indian standards on fugitive emissions', said, "Unknowingly, farmers are one of the biggest contributors to pollution. They burn their crops due to a narrow window between harvesting and sowing. The problem is farmers don't know that this is a bad thing for them. So, the only way to solve this issue is creating awareness," Kaswa said and called on social service groups and NGOs to help in this regard.

10 state-of-the-art Isro techs transferred to Indian firms, says IN-SPACe

NEW DELHI: The country's space regulator-cum-promoter Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) on Thursday said it facilitated the transfer of 10 state-of-the-art technologies developed by Isro to six Indian companies. The tripartite technology transfer agreements, signed among NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), six companies and IN-SPACe at the regulator's headquarters in Ahmedabad, will give private players the opportunity to access developed technologies available with Isro, enabling them to use space-related technology for commercial applications in space as well as other sectors. The technologies that foster satellite launch, ground station infrastructure and geospatial applications are expected to deepen industry participation, enable indigenisation and reduce dependency on foreign technologies. Two advanced inertial sensors — Laser Gyroscope and Ceramic Servo Accelerometer — developed by Isro's inertial systems unit for potential use in satellite launch vehicles have been transferred to Hyderabad-based Zetatek Technologies, which has over 25 years of expertise in inertial navigation system (INS) testing, calibration and QA/QT equipment. Three technologies related to ground station operations — S/X/Ka tri-band dual circular polarised monopulse feed, tri-axis antenna control servo system and Ku/C/L and S Band Cassegrain feed — have been transferred to Avantel and Jisnu Communications, Hyderabad-based companies specialising in end-to-end communications solutions for space and defence platforms. These technologies, currently sourced from foreign vendors, will enable self-reliance in critical ground station infrastructure. Reacting to the development, IN-SPACe chairman Dr Pawan Goenka said, 'Transfer of these technologies marks yet another significant step towards empowering the private sector to harness and commercialise space technologies. Isro has a flourishing repository of R&D in space technologies, and it is time we leverage that to the optimum to strengthen India's space industrial ecosystem, and in that, industry-led innovation will play a key role. ' Further, two geospatial models developed by Ahmedabad-based Space Applications Centre of Isro for pest forewarning and semi-physical crop yield estimation were transferred to Ahmedabad-based Amnex Info Technologies, to be deployed in agricultural decision-making and crop protection. A compact, multi-parameter, portable bathymetry system developed by Isro's National Remote Sensing Centre has been transferred to Jalkruti Water Solutions, Ahmedabad, to enable UAV-based integration for water resource monitoring. Further, Isro's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre's ceramic-based flame-proof coating technology, which was originally developed for launch vehicle applications, has been acquired by Ramdev Chemicals, Ahmedabad, for wider industrial applications.

1 2 3 Kolkata: In a first-of-its-kind initiative, a group of doctors conducted a follow-up on 38 heart recipients, who underwent transplantation of the organ in Kolkata between 2018 and 2023. The survey conducted by these doctors show that 27 of these 38 patients, who underwent heart transplantation till Oct, 2023, were alive at the time of the follow-up. The data was collected from seven participating hospitals, where the transplants took place. The patients were in the age group of 12 to 58 years, 28 (73.6%) recipients being male and 10 (23.4%) female. Three were paediatric. According to the survey, out of the 38 heart transplant cases, 33 recipients were discharged from the hospitals where they underwent the surgeries. During the follow-up period, five patients died due to infective complications and one passed away because of organ rejection. Heart transplantation made its debut in Bengal only in May, 2018, at a private hospital. Infective complications were noted in 11 recipients (28.9%). The article titled 'Heart Transplant in West Bengal: Insights from a Collective Experience of Multiple Centers in an Indian State', published in the Indian Journal of Transplantation, also pointed out challenges such as postoperative primary graft dysfunction (PGD) and infections, which can be addressed with continued efforts, gaining further experience, and infrastructure development. Doctors Debasis Das, Nilanjan Dutta, Shubhadeep Das of Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah, Pradeep Narayan, Ayan Kar, Mrinalendu Das, Lalit Kapoor of RN Tagore Hospital, Kunal Sarkar and Soumyajit Ghosh of Medica Superspeciality Hospital, Subhendu Sekhar Mahapatra of IPGMER, Plaban Mukherjee and Subrata Dey of Medical College Kolkata, Tamashis Mukherjee of Apollo, along with Kayapanda Mandana and Tapas RayChaudhury of Fortis, came together to piece together the data. The first successful heart transplant from a brain-dead donor in India was conducted in 1994 at AIIMS, followed shortly by Madras Medical Mission Hospital, Chennai. "Despite the delayed start in West Bengal, the programme has witnessed significant growth. Currently, West Bengal has seven accredited centres for heart transplantation," said the authors. Among the seven hospitals with heart transplant facilities in the state, two are state-run facilities where the procedure is done for free. "This development marks a milestone in the region's healthcare, providing hope to patients with end-stage heart failure. Challenges such as postoperative PGD and infections persist but are expected to be addressed with continued efforts, gaining further experience, and infrastructure development," the article reads. The authors also acknowledged the contributions of Amitabha Chattopadhyay, Munna Das, Sanjiban Ghosh, Jayita Nandy Das, Manish Kumar Sharma, Rangan Koley, and Shivani Gajpal of Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Howrah.
