5 Dolphins defenders raising their stock in training camp, preseason

USA Today2 days ago
Following a 24-24 preseason tie on Sunday with the Chicago Bears, the Miami Dolphins stayed in the Midwest for another round of joint practices within the NFC North. Miami practiced with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, and it didn't go well.
The consensus from reporters on both sides was that the Lions got the better of the Dolphins.
But practices aren't the ultimate measure of regular-season success, and there were notable performances from Dolphins players fighting to make the 53-man roster:
LB Derrick McLendon
Signed by Miami to a futures contract in January, McLendon enters his second NFL season and is impressing this month. He recorded two tackles for loss, including a sack, against the Bears, and followed it up with another strong practice in Detroit on Wednesday.
McLendon is making a strong case for a roster spot and could have one if his ascension continues. A solid performance in Saturday's game could seal his chances.
LB Grayson Murphy
Murphy recorded a sack of his own against the Bears and has emerged as a playmaker. The second-year undrafted signee missed all of 2024 on injured reserve but was a promising prospect last summer before the setback.
DL Jordan Phillips
At just 21 years old, Phillips has plenty of potential to be a valuable member of the Dolphins' defensive line for years to come. His strong outing in Chicago, combined with a solid practice in Detroit, has him looking like a steal as a fifth-round pick out of Maryland.
Phillips could be in line for substantial snaps in defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver's rotation. As he showed against the Bears, Phillips has outstanding leverage and the ability to take on multiple blockers while still making plays, such as a goal-line stop over the weekend.
His stats may not pop off the page, but his space-eating ability and knack for freeing up teammates could significantly boost Miami's front seven.
LB Eugene Asante
Known for speed and relentless pursuit of ball carriers, the undrafted rookie is making a push for the 53-man roster. Asante showcased his quickness and physicality on Sunday, finishing with three solo tackles and an assist.
While he was flagged for what officials deemed a hit on a defenseless receiver while trying to prevent a Bears first down, and his effort can't be knocked. It continued into a solid day in Detroit on Wednesday.
Asante also brings special teams value, having excelled in that phase during college. At minimum, Asante looks like a strong candidate for the practice squad and could even push a fringe veteran for a roster spot. Miami has kept at least one UDFA on the roster for four straight seasons—Asante could make it five.
CB Ethan Bonner
Third-year boundary cornerback Ethan Bonner has impressed during the summer in each of his years with the Dolphins, and 2025 has been no exception. It was Bonner's pass deflection against the Bears that landed in the hands of safety Patrick McMorris for an interception.
In a thin and largely unproven cornerback room, Bonner could be in line to make the roster and see significant playing time in 2025.

No Grand Slam Track in 2026 till athletes paid for 2025: Johnson

The financially troubled Grand Slam Track circuit will not take place in 2026 until athletes awaiting prize money for this year are paid, its founder Michael Johnson said on Friday. Johnson admitted in a statement "we are struggling with our ability to compensate" athletes from the three meetings that took place in 2025 in Kingston, Jamaica, Miami and Philadelphia. The four-time Olympic sprint gold medallist said he had taken the decision to cancel the fourth and final meeting in Los Angeles "to avoid further losses and start the lengthy process of stabilising the company to get back on track. "But unfortunately, we saw circumstances change in ways beyond our control," he said. He added: "The 2026 season will not happen until those obligations are met -- and that is my #1 priority." Johnson launched Grand Slam as an alternative to the Diamond League series of international meetings with an important difference -- it would only feature track events and not field events. gj/pb

ESPN predicts how Notre Dame will fare in the College Football Playoff

On Friday morning two ESPN analysts, Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach predicted how the College Football Playoff would play out and both of them had much different outlooks for Notre Dame. They do think that the Irish will make the field of 12-teams, but with varying results. Bonagura has Notre Dame having a rematch of its season-opening game against No. 11 Miami as the No. 6 seed while Schlabach has the Irish as the No. 7 seed taking on No. 10 LSU. While Notre Dame is eligible to get a first-round bye, they don't think that will be the case this year. It could be a blessing in disguise, as all four teams that sat out the first-round of the CFP lost its second-round game last year. Schlabach doesn't have Notre Dame moving past the initial game, while Bonagura does. He has them matching up against No. 3 Ohio State, only to fall to the Buckeyes once again. As for the eventual championship game, they both have their No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams facing off, but with different matchups. Bonagura has No. 2 Penn State facing No. 1 Texas, while Schlabach has No. 2 Clemson also taking on the Longhorns. After what we saw last year, it's hard to say that the top-two teams will eventually play for a championship, as neither the Irish or the Buckeyes were one of the top seeds. This isn't how I see it playing out, as I think that the Irish will get a top-4 seed, and an easier path in the CFP. How do you see it playing out? Messi available to return from injury for Inter Miami, Mascherano says

Lionel Messi is expected to be part of Inter Miami's matchday squad on Saturday, when the club hosts the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy at Chase Stadium. Head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters on Friday that Messi is cleared to rejoin the team after missing Miami's last two matches with a right leg injury. Advertisement 'Leo is fine. He's been training with the team since Wednesday,' Mascherano said. 'Barring anything strange today, he should make the squad for Saturday's match.' Messi injured his hamstring on August 2 in the first half of Miami's win over Necaxa in the Leagues Cup. He has since sat out of Miami's matches against Pumas, a 3-1 win for the MLS side, and a 4-1 defeat to Orlando City last Sunday in an MLS regular season game that humbled Mascherano's men. Without Messi, Miami was outplayed in Orlando. The attacking edge and competitiveness that Messi adds were glaring omissions on the day — something that Mascherano could not replace against their Florida rivals. 'This can't happen again,' the manager said after the loss. Miami currently sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with three games in hand following participation in the Club World Cup this summer. The chances are still there for Miami to make up ground and challenge for the conference's top seed and another Supporters' Shield. Still, managing Messi's fitness ahead of a busy final two weeks of August could determine how eager Mascherano is to go all-out in both the regular season and Leagues Cup. And after signing Messi's Argentina teammate Rodrigo De Paul this summer, Miami's MLS Cup aspirations were further underscored. Miami has reached the Leagues Cup quarterfinals, too, and awaits a date with tournament contender Tigres next Wednesday. After Miami's first win of the tournament over Atlas, Messi told Apple TV that Leagues Cup is a tournament 'that we want to win.' Orlando City, Seattle and the Galaxy joined Miami as the four MLS teams to advance from the group stage. The winner, runner up and third-place team all qualify for the Concacaf Champions Cup. That competition is obviously important to Miami – it is MLS's potential gateway to the next Club World Cup – so one shouldn't expect Mascherano to take it lightly. It's also imperative for Messi, 38, to maintain his match fitness by playing in meaningful matches. Messi is currently tied with Nashville SC striker Sam Surridge for the top spot in the MLS Golden Boot race with 18 goals. Advertisement Messi was suspended by MLS for Miami's league match against FC Cincinnati on July 26 after opting out of the league's All-Star Game July 23. Upon his return against Atlas in Leagues Cup, Messi said that he needed to avoid missing games in order to compete at his highest level. Rest is one thing, but to lose his match fitness during an important stretch of games for Miami is clearly a concern for the Argentina captain. In September, the defending world champions will close out their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a home match in Buenos Aires against Venezuela, followed by an away test in Quito, Ecuador. Those two games are more than likely Messi's last qualifiers as Argentina's captain and World Cup hero. And even though Argentina has already qualified, it's conceivable that he'd like to be available to celebrate La Albiceleste's dominant campaign. The Argentina Football Federation will hope to feature Messi during the October and November FIFA international windows as well. This season was always going to be a heavier lift for Messi and Miami with the addition of the Club World Cup to an already congested schedule. Lessons will have certainly been learned after Miami ran out of gas in the first round of the MLS playoffs last season, crashing out against Atlanta United in one of the biggest playoff upsets in league history.
