Tucows Reports Strong Y/Y Earnings & Revenue Increases in Q1
Tucows reported first-quarter 2025 revenues of $94.6 million, up 8.2% from $87.5 million in the same period a year ago. Gross profit jumped 28.5% year over year to $23.5 million from $18.3 million. The net loss narrowed significantly to $15.1 million (or $1.37 per share) from a loss of $26.5 million (or $2.42 per share) in the first quarter of 2024. The adjusted net loss came in at $14.9 million, or $1.35 per share, improving from an adjusted net loss of $23.4 million, or $2.14 per share, a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA jumped 225% to $13.7 million compared with $4.2 million in the prior-year quarter.

All three operating segments — Ting, Wavelo and Tucows Domains — delivered solid performances. Ting Internet revenues rose 16% year over year to $16.3 million, driven by a 12% increase in subscribers and growth in average revenue per user (ARPU). Gross profit for Ting reached $10.5 million, up from $8.7 million a year ago, while the adjusted EBITDA loss significantly narrowed to $0.9 million from a loss of $9.5 million, aided by the capital efficiency initiatives introduced in 2024.
Wavelo, Tucows' platform services business, recorded revenues of $11.4 million, up 21% year over year. Gross profit increased 25% to $11.3 million, and adjusted EBITDA grew 60% to $4.4 million. Growth was attributed to an expanding subscriber base and improved contractual terms, including a rate card introduced as part of the renewed agreement with Echostar.
Tucows Domains generated revenues of $65.3 million, a 6% increase from the first quarter of 2024. Gross profit improved 9% to $20.2 million, and adjusted EBITDA rose 15% to $11.5 million. While total transactions declined 6% due to a large customer transition, the underlying business showed strength with a renewal rate of 76.5% and improved margins from higher-value services, such as expiry stream monetization.
CEO Elliot Noss emphasized that the company delivered these results in the context of four consecutive years of revenue growth. He highlighted the firm's ongoing cost optimization and deleveraging efforts, including a $2.5-million payment toward syndicated debt in the quarter. Noss noted that macroeconomic conditions, particularly the rise of AI, will increasingly shape business decisions and stressed the importance of thoughtful execution.
Dave Woroch, CEO of Tucows Domains, noted the resilience of the domain business, despite some churn, and pointed to growth opportunities ahead, including progress in the company's registry platform partnership with India's .in operator, NIXI and the expected expansion in generic top-level domains slated for 2026.
Wavelo CEO Justin Reilly described the first quarter as the business unit's best quarter to date. He attributed gains to improved customer alignment and strong execution by sales and engineering teams. Reilly also spoke extensively about the growing role of AI, highlighting its productivity benefits across operations, sales and engineering. He framed AI as a disruptive but empowering force for Wavelo's future competitiveness.
Revenue and profit growth were primarily driven by increased subscriber counts and higher ARPU in the Ting segment, stronger contributions from high-margin services in Domains, and an uptick in Wavelo's contracted platform deals. Operating efficiencies from the 2024 Ting restructuring initiative also contributed materially to EBITDA expansion across the board.
Cost discipline was evident across functional areas — sales and marketing expenses fell 41% year over year, and general and administrative expenses decreased 6%, helping offset higher network depreciation and financing expenses. Despite positive trends, net cash from operating activities was negative $11.3 million, nearly double the outflow of the prior-year quarter, reflecting investment in growth and the timing of receivables and contract liabilities.
Management commentary suggested expectations for adjusted EBITDA growth to moderate to single-digit levels in subsequent quarters. The company's focus remains on expanding margins, driving revenues, and maintaining strict cost controls.

Somehow the stock market just keeps climbing, despite tariffs and inflation fears
For the time being, the economic reality of tariffs has yet to catch up with the market's earlier worries. Corporate profits remain strong, and the economy, despite worries about what's to come, is still solid. There are pockets of weakness, but the biggest companies that drive the S&P 500's performance have been largely insulated against further impact from tariffs, propelled instead by the growth of artificial intelligence. Enter Email Sign Up 'There is a case to be made there that we are through the worst of it,' said Stuart Kaiser, an equity strategist at Citigroup. Advertisement With most companies in the S&P 500 having already reported earnings for the three months through June, the average growth rate of the companies in the index nudged into double digits for the third quarter in a row, according to data from FactSet. Bloomberg Big tech companies again led the way, helping to justify their high stock prices. A further contraction in the energy sector, alongside the continued malaise for manufacturers, paled in comparison with the growth of the tech juggernauts. Advertisement And while retailers and other companies that deal directly with consumers have complained about tariffs, the broad message among the big businesses that make up the S&P 500 is that they are manageable. 'This earnings season has allayed a lot of fears,' said Nelson Yu, head of equities at Alliance Bernstein. At the end of the first quarter, just 17% of companies raised their expectations for how they would perform going forward, according to Citi. Many executives simply refrained from offering financial projections, citing uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration's tariff policies. But this quarter, more than 40% of companies in the index raised their earnings estimates, anticipating a more favorable environment than previously expected. 'Companies are telling you they have more clarity, because otherwise they wouldn't provide that guidance,' Kaiser said. Companies, much like investors, loathe uncertainty because it prevents planning and making major decisions. At least with the tariffs roughly in place, there is a sense among executives that the picture is becoming clearer. This month, Citi raised its forecast for where the S&P 500 will finish the year, joining Bank of America, Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and others that raised their targets recently. Those forecasts, however, cluster around where the index stands now -- mostly between 6,300 and 6,600, with Thursday closing at 6,469 -- pointing to an expectation that the rally will slow the rest of the year and underscoring lingering concerns. The recovery from the stock sell-off in April is less pronounced in other indexes. The Russell 2000, which is made up of smaller companies less able to absorb the effects of higher tariffs, is just one index that hasn't shown the same roaring recovery as the S&P 500. Advertisement The Russell turned positive for the year after this past week's inflation report showed only a modest impact so far from tariffs, cementing expectations that the Fed will soon cut interest rates as it starts to slowly take the brakes off the economy -- albeit more slowly than the president would like. Falling interest rates are generally seen as positive for the stock market, but if inflation speeds up significantly, the central bank will be less inclined to keep cutting rates, tempering the forecast for many of the companies that make up the Russell 2000 (and even some in the S&P 500). That wariness has kept many larger fund managers from diving back into the stock market as enthusiastically as retail investors have, according to research from Deutsche Bank. If those hesitant investors return to the market, that could add a tail wind in the second half of the year. But the lack of activity also underlines that not everyone is convinced that the current rally is sustainable. 'The broader group outside of retail is more cautious, more neutral,' said Parag Thatte, an equity strategist at Deutsche Bank. Even neutral is a much rosier sentiment than just a few months ago. After the S&P 500 rose more than 20% for two consecutive years, worries that this year was going to be something of a reckoning for the market have faded. History Shows That Palantir Stock's Monster Run Is Speeding Toward an Epic Crash -- and It All Might Come Down to 1 Detail That No One Is Talking About
Key Points Palantir stock is surging thanks to the company's ability to consistently deliver record-breaking growth from its artificial intelligence (AI) products. While it's tempting to follow momentum, Palantir is trading at valuations that eclipse even those seen during prior stock market bubbles. Institutional investors appear to be reining in their buying activity. 10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies › As of the closing bell on Aug. 12, shares of data mining darling Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) have skyrocketed by 147% year to date -- making it the top-performing stock in the S&P 500 for two years running. The obvious talking point here is that Palantir has been on a monster run throughout the course of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. Skeptics point to Palantir's lofty valuation as the cornerstone of the bear argument, as the stock trades at levels encroaching on dot-com-era bubble territory. While that's true, such concerns haven't stopped the stock from repeatedly notching new highs. I think there is a far subtler detail surrounding Palantir stock that rarely gets discussed. If history is any guide, it could set the stage for an epic reversal. Is now the time to sell Palantir stock? Read on to find out. Valuation that redefines what it means to be "expensive" During the late 1990s, internet companies were often measured by non-financial metrics based on user engagement. Businesses such as Amazon, Cisco, Microsoft, Alphabet, and Yahoo! were valued based on eyeballs and clicks rather than sales and profits. At the peak of dot-com euphoria, many of these internet pioneers traded at price-to-sales (P/S) multiples between 30 and 40 -- considered unsustainably high at the time. Palantir has completely redefined how next-generation technology businesses are valued, though. As of Aug. 12, Palantir boasts a market cap of nearly $444 billion -- larger than Salesforce, SAP, and Adobe, which are far more mature, diversified businesses. Perhaps even more striking is that Palantir's P/S of 137 exists in its own stratosphere -- completely outside the dimensions of its software-as-a-service (SaaS) peers. Some argue that traditional valuation methodologies such as P/S or earnings multiples don't fully capture Palantir's true value or its full potential. Instead, they urge investors to focus on industry-specific and financially engineered metrics such as the Rule of 40 to see just how "cheap" Palantir stock really is. I think this argument is flawed. There's a more telling metric -- and one that almost nobody talks about -- that makes me think Palantir stock could be on a collision course with history. Is "smart money" trying to tell us something? The chart below tracks buying activity in Palantir stock across institutional investors since its initial public offering (IPO) in late 2020. Initially, there was a wave of "smart money" buying during early 2021, which was met with substantial selling during the latter half of that year. Palantir's institutional ownership picked up again following the company's splash into the AI realm a couple of years ago. It's this dynamic where I think the retail investing crowd is missing the bigger picture and buying into a mirage. As the chart above illustrates, there is a convergence happening between the institutional buying and selling in Palantir stock. When net demand tightens -- meaning that buying is no longer materially higher than selling -- it takes less downside pressure to inspire a precipitous drop in share price. I see the dynamics illustrated in the chart above as an inflection point for Palantir stock. In addition, banks, wealth management firms, mutual funds, and hedge funds all have different priorities. Many of these institutions are required to hold large-cap stocks for benchmarking purposes, not because they think the stock is undervalued or because they carry some "diamond hands" conviction that shares are going higher despite abnormal volatility in the present. When a stock becomes an abnormally high weight relative to the overall portfolio, institutional investors often trim their exposure. This is known as portfolio rebalancing. This scenario can be perfectly explained in the video clip above in which mutual fund billionaire Ron Baron describes his fiduciary responsibility to take profits from time to time in even his highest-conviction positions, such as Tesla. If a stock becomes overinflated, institutions will use this market liquidity as a mechanism to sell their shares to retail at a premium. This dynamic is more colloquially referred to leaving retail "holding the bag" when the hype narrative fades. While I can't say for certain where Palantir stock is headed, my thought is that fund investors are going to pressure portfolio managers to trim exposure to Palantir and take some money off the table, much like what Baron experienced. I think the pressure will be rooted in the anticipation of a valuation reset for Palantir given its frothy positioning relative to peers. Will history repeat itself? Although history is not always a perfect predictor, I think it's a strong barometer in this case. While it's virtually impossible to pick the perfect time to sell a stock, I think there are some compelling -- and overlooked -- details that suggest Palantir stock could be headed lower from current price points sooner than many bulls expect.
