Reds put RHP Hunter Greene on IL, sign LHP Wade Miley

Reuters04-06-2025
June 4 - The Cincinnati Reds placed ace right-hander Hunter Greene on the 15-day injured list Wednesday, citing a right groin strain.
Greene started for the Reds on Tuesday in their 4-2 home win over the Milwaukee Brewers. He told the staff that he felt discomfort and left the game after five innings.
The outing was just his third since being activated from the injured list on May 23 after missing two weeks with the same ailment.
"We stayed here for a while last night, we talked to him, we talked to trainers," Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Wednesday, per The Athletic. "Since it happened once and this is twice, we've got to figure this out. And then his lower back was starting to (affect him) and we're trying to figure out if it's related. We've got to get him healthy. It was kind of an easy decision even without seeing the MRI."
An MRI was scheduled for later Wednesday.
In corresponding moves, the Reds signed left-hander Wade Miley and transferred right-hander Rhett Lowder (right forearm, left oblique strains) to the 60-day injured list.
Miley opted out of his minor league deal with the Reds on Sunday and became a free agent. He is coming off ulnar collateral ligament surgery and has not pitched in the majors since April 16, 2024, with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The 25-year-old Greene, an All-Star in 2024, has made 11 starts this season and is 4-3 with a 2.72 ERA. He has struck out 73 batters and walked just 14 in 59 2/3 innings.
He has a 22-28 record and a 3.74 ERA in 83 career appearances (all starts). The Reds selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 MLB draft out of high school in the Los Angeles area.
Miley has a career 108-99 mark with a 4.07 ERA in 317 games (310 starts) with eight different teams since making his major league debut in 2011. This is his second go-round with the Reds. He was with the team in the 2020 and '21 seasons, going 12-10 with a 3.55 ERA in 177 1/3 innings over 34 starts (32 innings).
Miley, 38, is expected to step into the starting rotation, perhaps as soon as Monday against the Guardians in Cleveland.

Tencent says US AI chip import situation unclear as governments negotiate

BEIJING, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Chinese tech giant Tencent ( opens new tab said on Wednesday it lacks clarity on U.S. AI chip imports as Beijing and Washington continue negotiations, though the company maintains it has sufficient inventory for its AI operations. "We don't really have a definitive answer on the import situation yet. There are a lot of discussions between the two governments. We are waiting to see what exactly comes out of that," Tencent President Martin Lau said during a post-earnings call. The comments come amid ongoing tensions over advanced semiconductor trade between the world's two largest economies. Nvidia(NVDA.O), opens new tab's H20 chips, designed specifically for the Chinese market, have been at the center of recent regulatory scrutiny from both governments over security concerns. Lau said the uncertainty would not constrain Tencent's AI ambitions, noting the company has adequate chip supplies for AI model training and multiple deployment options for AI services. The Shenzhen-based company reported strong second-quarter results, with revenue rising 15% to 184.5 billion yuan ($25.7 billion), beating analyst estimates of 178.5 billion yuan according to LSEG data. Gaming remained a key growth driver, with domestic revenue rising 17% to 40.4 billion yuan and international revenue climbing 35% to 18.8 billion yuan. Marketing services revenue increased 20% year-on-year to 35.8 billion yuan, bolstered by the use of AI to enhance the targeting of adverts. Net profit for the quarter reached 55.6 billion yuan, surpassing analyst expectations of 52.3 billion yuan, LSEG data showed. Tencent has accelerated AI investments over the past two years, though capital expenditure has moderated recently. After spending 36.6 billion yuan in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 27.5 billion yuan in the first quarter, its capex fell to 19.1 billion yuan in the second quarter. Lau signaled a more measured approach going forward as the company seeks sustainable monetization from its AI initiatives and to "spend smartly". The company has developed its own large language model, Hunyuan, launching the latest "Turbo S" version in February. But Tencent has also embraced third-party models, notably integrating DeepSeek's technology across its platforms including WeChat, which has over 1 billion monthly active users. NFL quarterback gives perfect response to fan's mom who sent flirty message

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Hartman showed his appreciation for some support from the mother of a fan who couldn't help but profess her admiration for his looks. Hartman, the former Wake Forest and Notre Dame signal caller, is set to enter his second year in the NFL. The 26-year-old hasn't gotten much playing time, but has still become something of a heartthrob in the eyes of the league's female fans thanks to his long hair and beard. With the NFL in the middle of preseason, fans have been able to watch practices. One practice saw Hartman interact with a fan, who asked the quarterback to send her mother a message. 'Sam, would you mind saying hi to my mom Susan? She thinks you're super hot,' the woman asked him. With a smile, Hartman replied, 'Susan, I don't discriminate from age, but I appreciate your support.' 𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚: Commanders star QB Sam Hartman responding to a mom who called him hot. 'Sam, would you mind saying hi to my mom, Susan? She thinks you're super hot.' Sam: 'Susan, I don't discriminate from age." 😭😭😭 — Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) August 12, 2025 Hartman had a strong college career - being named to the All-ACC team twice in his career and passing for over 15,500 yards and 134 touchdowns across his six years. After going undrafted in 2024, Hartman eventually inked a deal with the Commanders. He has not yet taken a snap in an NFL game in the regular season, but he did get some time with Washington in the preseason. Hartman completed 9-of-19 passes for 64 yards and one interception in the Commanders' 48-18 loss to the New England Patriots. It wasn't a strong case to make for Hartman, who is battling Marcus Mariota and Josh Johnson for a backup spot on the roster behind starter Jayden Daniels. The Commanders' next game is on August 18 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
