12-day Saraswati Pushkaralu kicks off in Kaleshwaram
The 12-day Saraswati Pushkaralu, a Kumbh Mela-like ritual for Saraswati river kick-started at the temple town Kaleshwaram, the abode of Sri Kaleshwara Sri Mukteswara Swamy temple in Telangana's Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, on Thursday.
The once in 12-year mega religious event began at 5.44 am with Ganapathi puja, ankurarpanam, and other holy rituals amid chanting of Vedic hymns by the priests of the historic Sri Kaleshwara Sri Mukteswara Swamy temple.
Madhavananda Saraswati of Sri Gurumadananda Saraswati Peetham performed special rituals marking the start of the event, which is dedicated to worshipping the subterranean Saraswati river, which converges with the Godavari and the Pranahita at the confluence point called 'Triveni Sangamam' in Kaleshwaram,
Telangana chief minister A Revanth Reddy took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangamam and unveil the statue of Goddess Saraswati. He also witnessed the 'Saraswati Nava Ratnamala Harathi' ritual at Saraswati Ghat.
Addressing the devotees after performing to the presiding deity of the Kaleshwaram temple, the chief minister said it was for the first time that the state government was organising 'Saraswati Pushkaralu' since the formation of Telangana in 2014, as part of preserving our culture and traditions.
'I am very much delighted and fortunate that such a big religious event is organised during my tenure. Rivers not only reflect our civilisation but are also considered as gods,' Revanth Reddy said, adding that the state government was gearing up to celebrate Godavari Pushkaralu scheduled to be held next year.
The chief minister announced allocation of ₹200 crore for the development of Kaleshwaram temple area and promote it as a big tourist destination before Godavari Pushkaralu. 'We shall release funds through the green channel for the event next year,' he said.
Justice Surepalli Nanda of the Telangana high court, IT and industries minister D Sridhar Babu and Bhupalpally MLA Gandra Satyanarayana Rao were among those who took the holy dip at 'Triveni Sangamam' soon after the initiatory rituals. Spiritual leaders, eminent personalities and public representatives took part.
The entire temple town has been decked up befitting the occasion with a tent city coming up along the sprawling bathing ghats in the historic pilgrimage centre. The authorities informed that the 12-day event will witness River Harathi, by pandits of the famous Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi of Uttar Pradesh and a host of devotional programmes.
Sridhar Babu told reporters that around 50 special officers have been appointed to oversee the sanitation measures during the 12-day event. Dozens of ace swimmers and traditional boats have been deployed along the river course in the temple town to ensure the safety of the pilgrims. Around 3,500 police personnel have been deployed for bandobust, and as many as 200 CCTV cameras have been installed in the temple town, he said.
Arrangements have been put in place for drone-aided surveillance on the temple town as a safety precaution. NDRF, SDRF and Singareni rescue teams have been stationed in the temple town, he added.

Siddaramaiah On Shifting Cricket Stadium Siddaramaiah said that the government is contemplating long-term solutions, as part of which the stadium could be shifted to a new location. 'The government will look into shifting the cricket stadium to another location," news agency ANI quoted the Chief Minister as saying. 'Such an unpleasant incident should not happen under any government. Personally, this incident has hurt me and the government. Five police officers have been suspended in this case. The intelligence chief and the chief minister's political secretary have been replaced," he added. He said that the government has taken the case seriously and has also initiated appropriate action. Siddaramiah maintained that his government has not done anything wrong in the entire episode that unfolded since June 4. 'This incident is saddening, but no misstep was taken by the administration. Legal action has been taken against those found guilty, so there is no question of embarrassment for the government," he said. He also responded to the criticism by Opposition BJP and JDS, and said, 'Did the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh resign when people died during the Kumbh Mela? Did the BJP and JDS demand his resignation then?" Siddaramaiah further said his government had no role in the organisation of the felicitation ceremony of the players on June 4, when the tragic stampede happened. DCP's Letter Surfaces Despite police warnings about security risks, the Karnataka government held a felicitation event for IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Vidhana Soudha on June 4. Earlier that day, DCP MN Karibasvanna had warned the DPAR in writing about security concerns. Vidhana Soudha officials also alerted DPAR chief G Satyavathi about a lack of security staff for the high-profile event. 'The RCB cricket team has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha when lakhs of cricket fans will arrive at Vidhana Soudha will lead to problems in security arrangements since there is a shortage of officers/personnel in Vidhana Soudha security division," the letter stated. "I Was Informed Much Later": Karnataka Chief Minister On Bengaluru Stampede
New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday distanced himself from the stampede incident outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL win celebrations on June 4, blaming top police officials for the failed security arrangements. According to Mr Siddaramaiah, he was informed about the stampede much later. The Chief Minister also clarified that the government did not organise the event. "It was not a government-organised event at the stadium, and I had not been invited. Despite the victims being admitted to the hospital by 3:50 pm, I was informed of the incident only at 5:45 pm. The stampede should never have occurred. It is deeply saddening," Mr Siddaramaiah told the media. He said that the police department failed to share comprehensive information about security arrangements at the venue beforehand. "Five police officers have been suspended. The state intelligence chief and my political secretary have been transferred. The government is taking this case very seriously. Appropriate action is being taken. The government is not at fault, but the incident is undoubtedly distressing," the Chief Minister said, adding that they are treating the incident with "utmost seriousness". Eleven people died and many more were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium last week, where a large number of people had gathered to participate in the RCB victory celebrations. Since then, Siddaramaiah has been facing a barrage of criticism, with the BJP and JD(S) members calling for his resignation. Responding to this, he said, "The government has not taken any wrong steps. Action has been taken against the guilty. So, there is no reason for embarrassment. During the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, many died due to a bridge collapse. Did their Chief Minister resign? Did BJP or JD(S) seek their resignation?" Mr Siddaramaiah also hit back at the BJP and the JD(S), accusing them of making politically motivated allegations over the stampede incident. 'Conditional permission' at Vidhan Soudha Siddaramaiah and the other leaders were present outside the Vidhan Soudha near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the day's victory march of fans ended and there, they had met the cricketers. According to officials, the police force deployed at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru had warned against the idea of holding the RCB's celebrations at the grand stairs of the premises, and also raised concerns over the security challenges that would arise due to a shortage of staff at the state legislature's security wing. Despite this, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had granted conditional permission, Mr Siddaramaiah said. "It was the duty of the police to ensure that all conditions were strictly followed. This permission was specific to an event in front of the Vidhana Soudha. However, no untoward incident occurred on the Vidhana Soudha premises. The stampede took place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where security arrangements by the police were found lacking. As a result, the concerned officers have been suspended," he said. A day after the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, against RCB, DNA Entertainment and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). According to the state government, DNA Entertainment managed the victory celebrations, while the KSCA organised the event.

Heard of stampede deaths later in evening: Karnataka CM
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said that he became aware of the deaths caused by the stampede outside Chinnaswamy Stadium only after 5.45pm on June 4, the day Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) held their IPL victory celebrations. The tragedy resulted in 11 fatalities and over 56 injuries. 'I came to know the deaths happened at 5.45pm. At 3.50pm, deaths were reported at the hospital, but I came to know about it only at 5.45pm. Until that point, I was not aware of deaths taking place due to the stampede. I have taken action against whoever has done wrong,' Siddaramaiah said. The CM's statement implied that he became aware of the incident only after the celebrations at Vidhana Soudha had concluded. He did not attend the event at Chinnaswamy Stadium, which began around 6.10pm and was attended by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The comments came a day after a letter came to light, written by Vidhana Soudha security officer MN Kariasavana who had flagged security concerns about holding the event outside the state assembly. 'Lakhs of people are supposed to come to Vidhana Soudha. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, security arrangements will be difficult,' he wrote to the department of personnel and administrative reforms secretary G Satyavanthi. Distancing himself from the event's organisation, the CM added, 'The incident happened near the cricket stadium. I have no connection with that. It should not have happened.' He explained that the event was organised by the cricket association. When asked about any planning meetings or involvement of top leaders, he denied any knowledge. He told reporters, 'Neither the Deputy Chief Minister…', then corrected himself saying, 'no, neither the Home Minister, nor I know about it (planning of meetings).' 'It was a normal procedure. The DPR secretary informed me about the event. I asked the Chief Secretary, and she said we could go ahead, especially since the police had agreed,' he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI. 'The KSCA Secretary and Treasurer met me and invited me. It is not organised by us. They had organised and I was invited. They told me that the Governor would also come... Other than that, I don't know anything. The government has nothing to do...I was not invited to the stadium event.' Responding to calls for his resignation, Siddaramaiah questioned the precedent, citing other tragedies where resignations were not demanded: 'A bridge fell off, did anyone resign then? In Kumbh Mela, 58 people died, did BJP or Kumaraswamy ask for the resignation of the Prime Minister?' Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) escalated its criticism of the Congress government over the tragedy. Senior BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition R Ashok and MLA Prabhu Bhamla Chavan, protested at the steps of Vidhana Soudha, holding Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara responsible and demanding their immediate resignations. 'The real culprits are the Chief Minister, the Deputy CM, and the Home Minister. All three should resign. This is the demand of the entire state,' Chavan said, accusing the government of scapegoating suspended police officers. 'They are being sacrificed to shield the ministers. We say, don't offer compensation. Instead, take moral responsibility and resign.' Ashok slammed the government for rushing the event without proper planning, resulting in loss of lives. 'This is not a government, it is a Tughlaq Durbar. Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar must step down,' he said, demanding compensation of ₹1 crore for each deceased and stressing the need for accountability. The BJP also opposed the suspension of police officers, including then Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, asserting the police had no fault as permission for the parade had been denied. 'The BJP stands with the police and will fight for them,' Ashok said. The BJP has announced plans to meet Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot to seek his intervention and push for the dismissal of the government.
