MC names Isaac Fontenot-Amedee as the new men's head basketball coach
MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Midland College has named Isaac Fontenot-Amedee as the next head men's basketball coach. Amedee formerly served as the assistant head coach under Tra Arnold for the last two seasons. In the 2024 season, Arnold had to step away to deal with some health issues, and Amedee was named the interim head coach. As the interim, he led the Chaps to a 21-10 record, a trip to the NJCAA Region V Tournament, and a No. 18 national ranking in the final NJCAA Division I poll.
Amedee is very experienced in the WJCAC, formerly serving as the head coach at Clarendon for five years. There, he led the Bulldogs to their winningest season in program history (29-3) and highest national ranking (No. 3) en route to a WJCAC Championship and NJCAA National Tournament berth in 2020, before COVID-19 canceled the tournament.
After the great run, Coach Amedee was named Coach of the Year by the WJCAC, the Region V Coach of the Year and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Junior College Coach of the Year.
Tomorrow, a press conference will be held at Midland College to introduce Amedee as the next head coach of the MC men's basketball team.

Miami Springs' Fanshawe and Mater Academy's Bencomo are Dade Baseball Coaches of the Year
The list is probably a short one. Coaches who have won a state baseball championship as a head coach, assistant coach and a player. It's one that David Fanshawe joined a few weeks ago when he watched his Miami Springs team complete a dream season. The Golden Hawks went 20-3 during the regular season, rolled to six straight regional playoff wins in Class 3A and then upset both Fort Myers Bishop Verot and Santa Rosa Beach South Walton to win not only the program's first state title, but the first state championship for the school in any sport in nearly four decades. For that, Fanshawe is the Miami Herald's Class 4A-1A Dade Baseball Coach of the Year. Fanshawe, who just completed his ninth season at Springs came over from Brito Miami Private in 2016 where he won back-to-back state titles as an assistant under Pedro Guerra in 2014-15. It was also the same place he won it as a player when he was on the mound as the winning pitcher in the 2006 championship game when Brito edged Jacksonville Eagle's View 4-3. 'The sport of baseball has been awfully good to me,' Fanshawe said. 'I've had some great experiences at a couple of great programs. I guess maybe I'm one to add to that list if there is one. The nicest thing about what we just did is that I got to watch those kids get to experience what I experienced as a player in high school.' Speaking of short lists, with Fanshawe's two players, Kevin Roque and Magdiel Estevez nailing down Pitcher and Player of the Year honors, respectively, Springs completed the Herald's triple sweep with him getting Coach of the Year. 'It's an honor to be recognized but obviously if it weren't for these kids and what they accomplished, there would be no coach of the year award for me,' Fanshawe said. 'They played their hearts out for me and the coaching staff and in order to have this success, you need to have great assistants as well which I was lucky to have.' For Humberto Bencomo, Mater Academy's state title in Class 5A was the program's second, but his first, as a head coach, assistant or player. For that accomplishment, Bencomo is the Herald's 7A-5A Coach of the Year. 'I'm truly humbled and honored to be recognized like this,' Bencomo said. 'This recognition is not just about me, it's a testament to the incredible heart and dedication of my players and coaches, the unwavering support from our administrators and the constant encouragement from our parents. Without all of that, none of this happens.' The Lions, who won their first championship in 2014, overcame a 1-5 start to the season, rolled to six straight regional playoff wins and then upended Fort Myers 8-5 in the state semifinal (battling back from an early 5-0 deficit) before defeating Wesley Chapel 6-1 for the title. 'In baseball you have to be willing to do whatever it takes,' Bencomo said. 'Whether it's a clutch hit, a perfect bunt, or a diving catch. That's what makes a championship team and that's exactly what we showed this past season.'

WNBA Futures 2025: Betting, odds, expert picks, best bets including Clark, Collier, Wilson, and More
We are almost at the 25% mark for the WNBA regular season and with injuries to Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers, let's take a look at the updated race for MVP and Rookie of the Year, plus the battle between A'ja Wilson, Napheesa Collier, and more for Defensive Player of the Year. All odds are courtesy of DraftKings and subject to change. WNBA MVP Ladder: The MVP market continues to look like a runaway in favor of Napheesa Collier (-350) as Caitlin Clark (+425) remains sidelined. Collier is shooting a ridiculous 50/40/90 split this season — 52.5% from the field, 42.5% from three, and 91.7% from the free-throw line with 25.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game — all career-highs so far except for rebounds. Collier's been a brick wall on defense too with 2.3 steals and 1.4 blocks per game, which is why she is the favorite for DPOY now. Collier's MVP odds moved from -250 to -350 over the past week, while Clark dropped from +375 to +425 and A'ja Wilson to +1600 from +750. Breanna Stewart is +3500 as the next closest in terms of odds before there is a plethora of 100-to-1 options tied for fifth. WNBA DPOY Ladder: Napheesa Collier (+225) has overtaken A'ja Wilson (+250) as the slight favorite for the DPOY, but Wilson is doing everything she can to keep opponents from scoring 100 on that Aces' defense. The Aces rank 9th in defensive efficiency versus the Lynx who are 2nd. The Liberty lead the WNBA in defensive rating, steal percentage, block percentage and top three in opponent last break points per game and points in the paint. A lot of that has to do with Jonquel Jones' (+800) dominance down low. The 6-foot-6 center missed the previous game, but is listed as game-to-game, so her price shouldn't be impacted much. I am keeping my eye on her because it's starting to feel like she is the bet to make in this market. WNBA ROY Ladder: Paige Buckers (-950) hasn't played in June (5/29), but she will return Wednesday, June 11, so there was no movement worth mentioning in this race over the past week. While Kiki Irafen (+800) and Sonia Citron (+1600) remain impressive second and third options for the award — there isn't much hope either player can take home this hardware over Bueckers. Vaughn Dalzell's WNBA Futures Bets: 2 units: Stephanie White to win Coach of the Year (+115) 2 units: Minnesota Lynx to win Championship (+340) 2 units: A'ja Wilson to win MVP (+225) 2 units: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+150) 0.5 unit: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+300) 0.5 unit: Angel Reese to win DPOY (+2000) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win DPOY (+3500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win DPOY (+5500) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win Most Improved Player (+1500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win Most Improved Player (+3000) Please bet responsibly.
