The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday questioned the state government for insisting on keeping its status report on the stampede in a sealed cover and underlined transparency and accountability in the investigation process. When the suo motu petition over the stampede, that claimed 11 lives on June 4, came up for hearing before Acting Chief Justice V Kameswar Rao and Justice CM Joshi, Advocate General Shashi Kiran Shetty said the government was not shying away from disclosure, but wanted to avoid prejudicing ongoing inquiries."We will place both reports next week," he said, referring to preliminary findings and interim assessments prepared by the state. The AG stressed that certain observations in the report were of preliminary nature and could be sensationalised by the media if made public prematurely. The bench reiterated that it would consider the question of keeping the status report inside a sealed cover and announced its decision to appoint an amicus curiae. Further, the court said it would seek assistance from the amicus curiae before arriving at a decision on the matter. The court indicated a clear preference for transparency and accountability in the investigation process. The AG sought an adjournment of 20 to 25 days to allow all reports to come in. However, the bench appeared unconvinced. "Why should that restrict us?" the court asked, reiterating that the proceedings were not limited by the state's internal timelines. The court said it intended to implead the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), and DNA Networks -- three entities involved in the conduct and management of the IPL match Advocates representing various applicants called for public disclosure of the state's report, arguing that transparency and accountability are vital.A counsel, quoting from a legal precedent, said, "A one-sided submission causes serious violation of natural justice." Another added, "Sealed covers lead to a culture of opacity."The bench directed the counsel seeking enhancement of compensation for victims to submit their application to the Advocate General so the state could respond accordingly. The court ordered that notices be issued to KSCA, RCB, and DNA Networks, making them party respondents. The next hearing is scheduled for June 23.

Stampede tragedy: BJP demands resignation of CM, Dy CM
Bengaluru: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Karnataka Assembly and veteran BJP leader, R. Ashoka, said on Tuesday that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, and Home Minister G. Parameshwara should take responsibility for their involvement in the recent Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stampede incident and a probe should be conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation. Speaking in the Assembly, LoP Ashoka said that if Siddaramaiah has any sensitivity regarding the incident, he should apologise to the people of the state. 'The Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister should take full responsibility for the stampede incident. Along with that, they should resign and a CBI investigation should be conducted in the matter,' he added.'Furthermore, rules should be formulated to prevent such incidents in the future, and a house committee should be appointed. Justice should be provided to the grieving parents,' he said.'Instructions about the programme were given from the Chief Minister's office itself. The state government says this is not a government celebration. But RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) have said that the state government invited them. This is also mentioned in the affidavit submitted to the court,' the LOP highlighted that the RCB in the court said, 'We didn't ask for victory celebration, government asked us. We sent players because government ordered us. We are just players who play under BCCI rules.'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said that an FIR should be filed against RCB. Ashoka also said, 'The KSCA stated to the court that the FIR against them has been filed to avoid public anger against the government. ''If proper doctors and ambulance arrangements were made, such a disaster would not have happened. Even after so many deaths, the RCB team went to the stadium and celebrated. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also went to this programme,' LoP Ashoka said.'According to Justice Michael D'Cunha Commission, 515 personnel were deployed. But only 194 signed in the register. Even when senior officials brought the news of deaths to the Ministers' notice, the programme did not stop. The RCB team members brought the IPL trophy to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Was it necessary for Shivakumar to kiss the trophy, hold it up and display it?' he asked.

TDPP leader Lavu urges Union Minister Nadda to expedite delivery of urea to Andhra Pradesh
VIJAYAWADA: TDP MPs led by Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party (TDPP) leader Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu, met Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers JP Nadda in New Delhi on Tuesday, and submitted a representation seeking timely supply of urea to Andhra Pradesh. In the representation, Lavu mentioned about the shortage of urea being faced by farmers in Andhra Pradesh during the ongoing Kharif season, an issue already conveyed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu through a letter dated August 8, 2025. He informed that against the sanctioned allocation of 6,22,000 MT for Kharif 2025, the State has received only 2,75,774 MT till July, resulting in a shortfall of 28,696 MT. For August, the Department of Fertilisers has allocated 1.65 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) against the requested 2.00 LMT, despite August-September being the peak consumption period. This shortage is already impacting critical agricultural districts, including Krishna, North Coastal Andhra, and parts of Rayalaseema, he said. He requested the Union Minister to ensure supply of the full 2.00 LMT for August 2025, inclusive of 0.29 LMT backlog, and direct companies to deliver at least 1,00,000 MT of August allocation by August 15. Lavu also sought to expedite vessel-wise allocations for CIL (65,650 MT) and IPL (18,150 MT) to avoid delivery delays. 'Additionally, I bring to your notice that the CIL vessel 'OBE LOTUS', carrying 47,500 MT of urea, is expected to arrive at Kakinada Port on August 14/15. Under the August supply plan. 41,600 MT of CIL urea was earmarked for Andhra Pradesh at Kakinada. Considering the urgent demand, and the improbability of another vessel arriving at Kakinada before month-end, I request that the State be permitted to draw its full August CIL allocation directly from this vessel upon berthing. Given the State's policy of early water release to mitigate cyclone risks, timely fertiliser supply is essential to safeguard over 16.19 lakh hectares of Kharif crops, and 18 lakh hectares of horticulture. I trust the Ministry will take immediate steps to address this matter, and ensure uninterrupted supply to our farmers,' he said.

Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede: LoP Ashoka demands resignation of CM Siddaramaiah, DCM and HM
BENGALURU: Leader of Opposition R Ashoka on Tuesday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, DCM DK Shivakumar and Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, terming them A1, A2 and A3, saying they should take responsibility for the death of 11 people in the stampede during RCB's IPL victory celebrations at Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4. Speaking on the issue for about two-and-half hours in the Assembly, Ashoka said he held the government solely responsible for the tragedy. 'If CM Siddaramaiah has any sensitivity, he should apologize to the people of the state. All three should take responsibility for this and resign, and CBI should investigate,' he said, suggesting that Law Minister HK Patil formulate rules to prevent such tragedies in future, and a House committee be appointed. 'Justice should be given to the grieving parents,' he demanded. Ashoka pointed out that the CM, on his 'X' account, posted an invite whereas the DPAR secretary advised against the mass gathering on the steps of Vidhana Soudha. RCB and KSCA, in their affidavit, have said the government invited them, he explained. 'I have the event timeline and wireless log book... A small kid could grasp that it was a government event and who is responsible for the tragedy,' he alleged. He lashed out at the CM, DCM and HM for continuing with the celebrations, unmindful of the casualties, deaths and injuries in the stampede. 'Shivakumar was getting minute-by-minute information and could have stopped the event.
