
Celebrate Indonesia's Independence Day at five UAE restaurants showcasing the nation's culinary heritage
Today marks 80 years since Indonesia declared its independence from Dutch colonial rule. The region had been known as the Dutch East Indies, or the Netherlands East Indies, and had been under European control for more than three centuries until it officially declared independence on August 17, 1945.
To celebrate the day, you may want to experience the many flavours of Indonesia – from nasi goreng, the hearty fried rice dish, to savoury satay and gado-gado, a famous peanut sauce salad.
These five restaurants bring a taste of the island nation's rich culinary heritage to the UAE, offering a delicious way to honour the anniversary of Indonesia's independence.
Andaliman, Dubai
Andaliman draws its name from a rare pepper from the highlands of North Sumatra. Many of its dishes also make use of andaliman pepper's unique citrusy flavour.
Located at the One&Only One Za'abeel, the upscale restaurant brings a unique, fine-dining twist to many Indonesian favourites, including Nasi Goreng and beef Rendang.
The restaurant's seafood offerings, such as Jimbaran grilled fish, are a highlight. Sourced locally, they often make the best of the catch of the day, butterflying and marinating the fish before grilling it over coconut husks. The open kitchen layout means that you can appreciate the techniques up-close.
The restaurant also has a special programme prepared for Independence Day, including a special menu, family-friendly games and giveaways.
Betawi Cafe, Dubai
A cozy restaurant in Jumeirah Lake Towers, Betawi Cafe takes pride in offering authentic Indonesian street food. It has several staple dishes in its menu, from nasi goreng and gado gado to sop buntut, an oxtail soup. There are also plenty of vegetarian options such as nasi padang, a platter dish consisting of rice with various accompanying dishes; and tahu gejerot, fried tofu in a sweet and spicy sauce.

Also located in Jumeirah Lake Towers, House of Indonesia offers a wide range of menu options that draw from the five major islands of Indonesia, providing a comprehensive taste of the country's diverse flavours.
After starters such as singkong goreng, a crispy cassava served with chili paste; and a fired chicken skin dish known as bakwan kampoeng, the menu moves on to dishes that clearly state its region of origin.
From Sumatra Island, you can try terong balado, aubergine cooked in a tangy sambal sauce; the beef foot curry gulai kikil; or the bebek bakar pempah, roasted duck with herbs. Dishes from Java include a coconut milk soup named sayur lodeh; a meatier alternative, the soto betawi; a nasi goreng; and beef ribs served with a black spicy sauce. From Kalimantan, try compressed rice cakes (ketupat) served with a rich fish stock, and from Bali island and South-east Nusa, sample the ayam betutu, a steamed and seasoned chicken. National Festival 2025 Colorfully Concludes
The National Eritrean Festival 2025, which was officially opened by President Isaias Afwerki on 9 August at the Expo Compound, colorfully concluded yesterday with an official ceremony. The closing ceremony was attended by Ministers, senior Government and PFDJ officials, as well as numerous artists and festival participants from across the regions of the country. Ambassador Zemede Tekle, Commissioner of Culture and Sports, noted the effort required to accommodate more than 50,000 visitors daily and commended the strong participation of committees, partners, and the disciplined involvement of the public. Ambassador Zemede also highlighted that the national festival serves as a forum where generations deepen their understanding, transfer noble societal values, and nurture competent and knowledgeable youth and children in one setting. Mr. Solomon Dirar presented a report outlining the achievements registered and challenges encountered during the week-long event. He stated that the festival was visited by about half a million people from across the country. The festival featured cultural and musical performances, traditional villages showcasing the cultures and traditions of the various ethnic groups, exhibitions of products by institutions and regions, children's educational and entertainment programs, book displays, painting and sculpture exhibitions, seminars, literature and poetry competitions, as well as research presentations, among others. The closing ceremony was highlighted by cultural and artistic performances, with awards presented to individuals and groups who contributed to and participated in the successful implementation of the national festival. Dubai: For modern Indian cuisine, head to Punjab Grill
Good Indian food is not hard to come by in Dubai — from two Michelin-starred gastronomic journeys to traditional, low-key curry spots, both are available aplenty. Punjab Grill, however, sits comfortably between these two disparate concepts. Located within Anantara Downtown, the restaurant immediately made us feel welcome and at home while still offering an elevated environment — reminiscent of some of my favourite London curry houses, where my family would go for special occasions or when my dad wanted to treat me and my siblings if my mum was out of town. The delightful waiter recommended we opt for their tasting menu, which features a series of dishes celebrating the colourful cuisines of India's vast and varied regions, each interpreted through Punjab Grill's modern lens. We began our seven-course gastronomic journey with a light amuse bouche, consisting of a cheese kulcha with chili, walnut, and dates. The meal quickly progressed to appetisers, including a decadent stuffed aloo, chili and peanut thecha and meaty dakshin shrimps served with fried idli and curry leaf podi. After this flavourful start, we moved on to the larger dishes, with highlights including lemongrass and chili tikka kebabs, raunakeen lamb seekhan, and jimikand ka seekh — each dish brighter in spices, citrus, and overall character than the last. Following this parade of meaty dishes, we enjoyed saucier curries. The paneer roulade, served on a bed of creamy butter sauce, was my favourite dish of the evening (though it wasn't an easy choice to make). This was paired with makhani saag, parsi salli chicken, roomali roti, and brun pav. By this point, we were understandably full, but there's always room for dessert. We were presented with an array of Indian sweet treats, including kulfi, saffron falooda, and a rose and khus granita. This dining experience was hard to fault, with an array of decadent yet fresh flavours and bright interpretations of classic regional dishes.
