Dr Hazland: Sarawak-Australia tie-ups possible in energy, environmental sustainability sectors
KUCHING (June 26): Sarawak and Australia are seeking potential collaborations in the field of energy and environmental sustainability, said Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni.
The Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability said this when receiving a courtesy call from Australia's Northern Territory Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations Robyn Cahill yesterday.
A statement issued by Dr Hazland's office said both leaders noted the similar direction taken by their respective governments in advancing clean energy transition and climate resilience efforts.
Cahill expressed Australia's keen interest in collaborating with Sarawak, particularly with technical expertise and knowledge exchange.
She highlighted Sarawak's progressive approach as a valuable partner in shaping a sustainable energy future.
Dr Hazland welcomed the engagement and shared the state's key initiatives under his ministry including the Sarawak Energy Transition Roadmap (SET-P), Sarawak Sustainability Blueprint 2030 (SSB), and the Sarawak Hydrogen Economy Roadmap (SHER).
These documents provide a comprehensive framework for Sarawak's shift towards a green economy, focusing on renewable energy, carbon reduction and clean technology development, said the statement.
Both parties agreed that the exchange of technical knowledge, joint research, and collaborative programmes could accelerate mutual goals and benefit stakeholders in both regions.
The discussion also touched on opportunities for capacity building, industry academia partnerships, and pilot projects in areas such as hydrogen production, carbon capture, and nature-based solutions.
The courtesy call concluded with a shared commitment to identify actionable pathways for partnership and to maintain regular engagement through bilateral platforms and technical dialogues.
'This meeting marks another step forward in strengthening Sarawak's global ties in environmental sustainability and reaffirms the state's commitment to international cooperation in addressing climate and energy challenges,' added the statement.

Opposition men pardoned
Free to walk: Thomas exiting the Cipinang penitentiary in Jakarta. — The Jakarta Post/ANN President Prabowo Subianto has taken a major stride to reconcile with two convicted opposition figures by granting them clemency and eliminating their prison sentences, a move widely seen as an effort to curb dissent and stabilise his first term in office. In an unexpected move, Prabowo submitted a request with the House of Representatives requesting abolition for former trade minister Thomas Lembong as well as amnesty for 1,116 convicts, including Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) secretary-general Hasto Kritiyanto. Thomas was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison after the court found him guilty in a corruption case pertaining to raw sugar import. Meanwhile, the Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced Hasto last week to three-and-a-half years in prison over bribery pertaining to a 2019 legislative seat appointment scheme. House Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad and Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas, both from Prabowo's Gerindra Party, announced on Thursday night that the legislature approved the proposal following consultations between the government and House party factions. Supratman confirmed that he initiated both clemency requests, citing 'national interest, political unity and the individuals' past contributions' to the country. 'This is about thinking in terms of the republic. Both individuals have demonstrated service to the nation, and the priority now is to strengthen our cohesion,' he told reporters during the briefing at the Senayan legislative complex in Jakarta. Deputy State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro reiterated national unity as the motivation behind the decision: 'If we want to move forward, it must be together through mutual cooperation.' He dismissed notions that Prabowo was seeking to interfere with the legal process, stressing that all Indonesian citizens are entitled to equal treatment under the law. Analysts called Prabowo's clemency for Thomas and Hasto a politicisation of the justice system, warning that the decision risks eroding judicial independence and weakening Indonesia's anti-corruption efforts. Both Thomas and Hasto's camps claimed both cases were politically motivated and driven by their criticism toward former president Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo. Thomas served as a co-captain of failed presidential candidate Anies Baswedan's campaign in the 2024 election. Meanwhile, PDI-P has repeatedly said the probe into Hasto was an effort to target him for being critical to Jokowi. — The Jakarta Post/ANN

Urimai slams MIPP for undermining opposition unity with criticism of Ramasamy
Urimai secretary M Satees today said MIPP deputy president S Subramaniam had made a baseless accusation when he reportedly labelled Urimai chairman P Ramasamy an 'opportunist' and claimed he lacked credibility among Malaysian Indians. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Urimai has slammed MIPP deputy president S Subramaniam for what it described as an 'uncalled-for and unprovoked attack' on its chairman, P Ramasamy. In a statement, Urimai secretary M Satees questioned the motive behind the criticism and said Subramaniam had made a baseless accusation when he reportedly labelled Ramasamy an 'opportunist' and claimed he lacked credibility among Malaysian Indians. He questioned what prompted the remarks and asked whether Subramaniam or MIPP felt uneasy about Urimai taking the lead in consolidating Indian support against the government. 'What does Subramaniam stand to gain by attacking a fellow opposition-friendly party like Urimai? 'Ramasamy is not just the chairman of Urimai. He is a respected national figure and a key leader within the Indian community. 'Subramaniam must not forget who he is trying to discredit.' In his statement, Satees said Urimai had consistently maintained an opposition-aligned position and shown 'unwavering solidarity' with the opposition over the past year, adding that Ramasamy had also repeatedly reminded party members not to attack friendly parties. Satees also noted that Selangor Urimai's recent remarks on the Turun Anwar rally last Saturday were meant to highlight the need for Perikatan Nasional – which MIPP is a component party of – to project a more inclusive image for the Indian community and did not single out any party. 'The interpretation by the media was their own and not a direct reflection of Urimai's intention,' he said. Stating that such continued 'unprovoked attacks' would be met with 'similar firmness', Satees urged MIPP's leadership and the PN coalition to rein in Subramaniam and focus on unity. 'I urge all Indian-based opposition parties to channel their energy towards the real adversaries of the Indian community — the Madani leaders — and to put an end to these unnecessary public quarrels.'

NEW YORK: US stocks slumped on Friday, and the S&P suffered its biggest daily percentage decline in more than two months as new US tariffs on dozens of trading partners and a surprisingly weak jobs report spurred selling pressure.
