Projecting the Falcons' 53-man roster after preseason opener

Yahoo2 days ago
The Atlanta Falcons got off to a promising start in their preseason opener against the Detroit Lions, but the game was suspended after Lions safety Morice Norris was hospitalized to begin the fourth quarter. The Falcons still had a nice showing in the three quarters of football that were played, especially on defense.
The entire defensive line played well, creating good pressure throughout the first half. Linebacker Josh Woods was dominant and along with edge rusher Arnold Ebiketie. Second-year defensive linemen Brandon Dorlus and cornerback Natrone Brooks had solid performances as well.
Offensively, there were a few standouts, including wide receiver Dylan Drummond, who caught all eight of his targets for a team-high 63 receiving yards. While the running game stalled out, quarterback Easton Stick had a solid outing.
Now that we have one preseason game in the books, check out our latest 53-man roster projection for the Falcons as they prepare for Friday's matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

NBA Cup schedule announced with games starting Oct. 31, some on NBC and Peacock

Both times the NBA Cup has been lifted, it has been by one of the legends of the game — LeBron James in 2023 and Giannis Antetokounmpo last year. The NBA Cup can also tell us something about teams we may want to keep an eye on in May and June. Last December, the Oklahoma City Thunder were playing in the NBA Cup Finals (but had an off night and fell to Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks; they were ready for the big stage by the time June rolled around). Two years ago, the Indiana Pacers, an up-and-coming team, reached the NBA Cup Finals, where they lost to the Lakers. However, they used the momentum from that run to reach the Eastern Conference Finals that year, then the NBA Finals this past season. The NBA Cup schedule has been released, with games starting on Oct. 31 and running through December, with some of them on NBC and streaming on Peacock. The NBA Cup opens with a Halloween night double header streamed on Prime: the Celtics at 76ers (7 p.m. ET), followed by the Lakers at Grizzlies (9:30 p.m. ET). All 30 NBA teams will play at least four NBA Cup games within their group of five teams, then the winners of each group, as well as one wild card from each conference, will advance to a knockout round. The NBA Cup semi-finals will take place Dec. 13, with the Cup Finals on Dec. 16 in Las Vegas. Games on NBC, Peacock Two critical games in the final week of group play will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on Peacock on Tuesday, Nov. 25. Those games are: • Magic at 76ers (8 p.m. ET)• Clippers at Lakers (11 p.m. ET) Philly hosting Orlando features two East teams with high expectations entering this season after both were rocked by injuries a season ago. If everyone can stay healthy, this showdown between Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner against Paul George and Joel Embiid will be must watch. Lakers fans like to say there is no rivalry with the Clippers, no battle for Los Angeles — until you tell them the Clippers have been the better team and the better run franchise for the past decade. These games between two teams that project to be top-six in the West are always entertaining, with LeBron and James Harden putting on a show. Potential blow for Collingwood as rival club 'closing the gap' for big-name star

The Western Bulldogs have reportedly 'closed the gap' on Collingwood in their bid to lure Jack Silvagni, with 'confidence growing' they can sign the key defender from Carlton. Silvagni has reportedly played his last game for the Blues and is being tipped to leave the AFL club in the off-season. Silvagni's departure is set to end a proud family history at the club after father Steven and grandfather Sergio both represented the Blues. Jack has met with Collingwood coach Craig McRae in recent weeks, and the Pies are believed to be the front-runners to snare him. But journalist Riley Beveridge reported on Wednesday the Western Bulldogs are giving Collingwood a run for their money. Speaking on the 'Gettable' podcast, Beveridge reported that Silvagni has also met with the Bulldogs, who are growing more and more confident of signing him. Beveridge believes Collingwood still have their noses in front, but the gap is closing. 'A big development with Jack Silvagni over the last week," he said. "He has now met with the Western Bulldogs, which is the third rival club he has met with. 'As we know, he met with Collingwood and 'Fly' - Craig McRae was very open about that - he's met with Brad Scott as he weighs up interest from Essendon, (and) he has now met with key and senior figures at the Western Bulldogs across the last week. I said last week I thought the Western Bulldogs were some way back in this mix - I think there's confidence growing at the Bulldogs. 'I still think Collingwood has its nose in front, but I don't think it's as significant as it was maybe a week or two ago when he first met with Craig McRae and figures at Collingwood. I think that gap now is potentially closing, although if I was to call it, I still think Collingwood is the favourite.' Bulldogs coach and Carlton CEO address Jack Silvagni situation Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge addressed the Silvagni speculation last week. It came after McRae copped some criticism for publicly confirming he'd met with the Carlton player. "I think with any free agent like Jack, every club's antenna is up," Luke Beveridge said. "But I've always maintained the line of not talking about who we're chatting with behind the scenes, just purely out of respect for our playing group. "Some of our lads are still un-contracted, they don't need to be thinking too much about who might take their spot. And also probably out of respect for someone like Jack ... in that he's got to spend time at his current club, if he is planning to move on." RELATED: Ken Hinkley responds after Collingwood player linked with Port Sydney Swans champion flags full-time code-switch with NRL club Carlton's incoming chief executive Graham Wright was asked earlier this week if Silvagni and fellow free agent Tom De Koning had already decided to leave. "We hope not," he said. "They've both had contracts, probably for the last couple of months in front of them ... we're hopeful that they're both here. 'Jack is a little bit the same (as De Koning), he's had a contract in front of him since Round 13-14 and I think it's been open out there that's been a four-year deal put forward for Jack. I'm really clear about free agents being free agents - they have every right to explore and we have no issue with Jack exploring. "We'd like him to sign and be here with us, absolutely. Finishing his career with the Carlton Football Club is what we'd love but that's a decision for Jack and his management.'

Caleb Williams will get his first preseason playing time in Johnson's offense when Bears host Bills

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson sees the second preseason game as the ideal time to get quarterback Caleb Williams some on-field reps. Williams will see game action in Johnson's offense for the first time when the Bears host the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night. Backups Tyson Bagent, Case Keenum and Austin Reed took the snaps in last Sunday's 24-24 tie against Miami in the preseason opener. 'Our starters are going to play, everyone is going to play,' Johnson said Wednesday. 'Last week and really all through camp I've been pretty consistent with the thought of reps, reps, reps are the most important thing to get (Williams) up to speed.' Johnson said he got Williams 80 to 100 practice plays within the offense that he wouldn't have had if he had played in Sunday's game. Of course, Williams wasn't facing a live defense trying to sack him. 'This week it's a different schedule, a different length of time in terms of between games, and all that,' Johnson said. 'So our plan right now is the guys that sat out last week they will be playing this week.' Williams' play in training camp practices has been inconsistent but Johnson has seen improvement from the second-year QB. 'I'm pleased with how he is able to spit these plays out right now,' Johnson said. 'He's made significant progress in that regard and once we get going here in a game week, we're going to condense the verbiage even more. But we have challenged him. It's been a lot. 'That was by design, and so if we struggle at all in the huddle to get the play out, then the delays are going to pop up. That's a little bit part of the learning process and us growing, but by design we have made this very challenging and hard and we know what we need to do as a staff to elevate some of that pressure. I think Week 1 we're going to be in a good spot.' What's less clear is who will start at left tackle. Starter Braxton Jones is being challenged by rookie Ozzy Trapilo. However, at Wednesday's practice, second-year undrafted free agent Theo Benedet alternated with Jones at left tackle with the starters, while Trapilo was the backup right tackle. Jaylon Johnson 'on track' for return Cornerback Jaylon Johnson remains on the non-football injury list, but Ben Johnson sounded more optimistic Wednesday that the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback will be ready for the season opener. 'He's right on track, he's right where he need to be,' Johnson said. 'It's really like I said, those type of injuries you really don't know. Short term, long term, every guy is a little bit different, but I think we're going in the right direction.' ___ AP NFL:
