Gran is only Brit on US death row after horrifying sinister murder of new mum
A British grandmother has been languishing on death row in the state of Texas in the US for the last two decades years after being convicted of killing a young mother.
Linda Carty, a native of St. Kitts and Nevis - which was a British territory when she was born - was found guilty of the murder of her neighbour Joana Rodriguez.
Carty, 66, was ruled to have plotted the abduction of the victim's new-born son with three men in May, 2001. New mum Joana, 25, was kidnapped from her Houston apartment along with her four-day-old-son before she was suffocated to death.
The newborn baby was found unharmed in a vehicle that same day — but his mother was found dead with duct tape over her mouth and a plastic bag around her head. She was discovered in the boot of a car Carty was leasing at the time.
The death row inmate appeared on 'British Grandma On Death Row' with Susanna Reid, which aired on ITV. Carty continues to maintain her innocence as the prospect of lethal injection looms.
She claims she was convicted largely on the word of her co-accused — Gerald Anderson, Chris Robinson and Carlos Williams were charged as Carty's accomplices and received long prison terms. But Carty was the one suspect who was sentenced to death.
When asked by Susanna: "If you weren't the one responsible, how did [it] happen?"
A tearful Carty replied: "I don't know for sure because I wasn't there. But I can truthfully say, and I can truthfully look you in the eye, and tell you that I had nothing to do with this crime."
The British grandmother was sentenced to death by lethal injection on February 21, 2002.
Carty previously told Sky News from behind bars in Huntsville Prison back in 2012 she was, '110 percent innocent'. She insisted in the interview that she felt for the victim's family but maintained that she was framed for the crime.
The former schoolteacher said: 'She's somebody's child too and she's somebody's daughter. So for me it's not only a healing process for me but to show the families that the person you have been hating all these years and that you thought because the state of Texas told you this is who did it, did not commit this crime.'
Carty is currently being held on death row at the Mountain View Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Gatesville. She does not yet have an execution date.
The death penalty has long been outlawed in the UK. The last British woman to be executed was Ruth Ellis in 1955 who was hanged for shooting her lover outside North London pub.

The fourth instalment of the franchise became her biggest hit after going viral within 24 hours of its release and it saw the star land a major record deal with Sony Music. Video footage released at the time showed the rapper, dressed in a white sports bra and wearing a baseball cap, being put in cuffs and led to a police van by two cops. She was charged a day later on two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The star soon found herself axed from both her BBC Radio 1Xtra show and Loose Women as well as having her social media endorsements pulled and no backing in the furthering of her music career. Lucy Letby was taught to write down darkest thoughts, friend claims in bombshell documentary
A bombshell new documentary on child killer Lucy Letby will offer a new explanation behind a number of scribbled notes written by the nurse which were used as evidence to convict her. Britain's most prolific child serial killer is currently serving 15 whole-life sentences for seven murders and seven attempted murders of babies while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Notes such as 'I am evil, I did this' were scrawled on a scrappy notepad found in her house, which also read: 'I killed them on purpose because I am not good enough to care for them and I am a horrible evil person.' 'Hate' was also written in block capitals with heavy ink and circled, while the note is headed: 'Not good enough.' But the notes also included other phrases such as: "I haven't done anything wrong" and "we tried our best and it wasn't enough" The NHS neonatal nurse is currently serving 15 whole life sentences for seven murders and seven attempted murders of babies while working at the Countess of Chester Hospital. According to The Times, a new ITV documentary will put forward a new explanation for the notes, which were presented by the prosecution as amounting to a confession - despite some of the notes appearing to deny her guilt. Dawn is a childhood friend of Letby with whom she studied her A-Levels at Aylestone School in Hereford. The 35-year-old, who did not want her last name to be published, said the pair were taught while in school to write down their most dark thoughts during 'peer-support training sessions' Speaking to the Lucy Letby: Beyond Reasonable Doubt? documentary, she said: 'At all of those training sessions, it was recommended to us that, you know, if you're feeling overwhelmed, you write down everything that's going through your mind that is, you know, troubling you. 'So, all of the dark thoughts, all of those inner voices that you can't silence. You just write it all down on a piece of paper to get it off your mind.' Letby has lost two attempts to challenge her convictions at the Court of Appeal so far, but questions are growing about the safety of Letby's convictions after multiple experts have cast doubts over some of the evidence used in the trial in August 2023. The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is reviewing an application by Letby's legal team, which includes a 300-page report from chemical engineer Helen Shannon and professor Geoff Chase, who refute claims made by the prosecution that Letby 'undoubtedly' poisoned two babies by spiking their feeding bags with insulin. Ms Shannon and Prof Chase, who were given access to the babies' medical notes, say they could have been born with specific types of antibodies in their blood which can cause a high reading of insulin. Speaking to the documentary, Ms Shannon said according to The Times: 'What was presented in court as this is smoking-gun evidence of poisoning actually looks pretty typical for a pre-term neonate. 'And we can't see any justification whatsoever for the prosecution statement that it could only be poisoning.' Dawn also tells the documentary about the moment Letby was found guilty: 'I think I was at work when I heard that they were, sort of, returning the verdict, and sort of tuned in and I think I just sat there dumbfounded for a while, not really knowing how to process what I was hearing,' she said. 'I didn't think it was real. I immediately switched to thinking: 'Well, what's next, you know? What happens next? This can't be it. She can't just spend the rest of her life in prison'.'

She burst into tears when she landed and complained to the water sports centre's manager, then to the local police. Michelle paid £6,000 for the holiday in Sousse with her daughter, 17, her 16-year-old twin boys and her daughter's friend, also 17. Tunisia and the island of Djerba But she said she felt unable to enjoy the rest of her trip and 'didn't feel safe until I was at home'. She said: 'As women you expect a bit of banter from men in these countries, but this wasn't banter, it was a sexual assault.' Michelle believes her attacker has since been arrested. Her insurance company and the Foreign Office are assisting in the case. EasyJet said: 'The safety and wellbeing of our customers is a priority, and we are continuing to support Ms Wilson.
