Oliver Glasner targets more joy against Liverpool on ‘dream' Wembley return

Palace will learn on Monday – via a verdict from the Court of Arbitration for Sport – whether they will compete in the Europa League or Conference League this season, but first will look to upset another top-flight giant after defeating Manchester City to claim their maiden major trophy in May. The Eagles are unbeaten in their last three trips to Anfield, drawing twice and winning once – a fact that is not lost on Glasner, who will be relieved to shelve conversations about Palace's legal drama and focus on another chance at silverware and the new campaign. THREE POINTS ON MERSEYSIDE 🤩 🔴 0-1 🦅#CPFC | #LIVCRY — Crystal Palace F.C. (@CPFC) April 14, 2024 'That's why we asked to play the Community Shield at Anfield, because we are unbeaten there,' joked the Austrian. 'But, again, nobody listens to us. But we (were) unbeaten at Wembley (last season), so that's why we accepted it at the end. 'Honestly I don't know why, but I'm always entering the games and have the confidence and the belief that we can win it. We showed it against Arsenal, we showed it against City, against Villa, last game against Liverpool. 'We know they are a great team, but I know we are a great team as well. We know that if we perform at our top level, I think no-one likes to play against us.' Though the importance of Sunday's prize yields varied opinions, Glasner, a man who revealed he is fiercely competitive even when playing Connect Four with his own daughter, needs no convincing about the significance of the occasion. He said: 'Go into any school, ask girls and boys where you want to play when you play football, and everybody will say 'I would like to play once in my life at Wembley'. 'We all experience it now the third time within three months. That means we are living all of our childhood dreams, and this is how I will always see these games.' Glasner confirmed both midfielder Cheick Doucoure (knee) and striker Eddie Nketiah (hamstring) are set for significant spells on the sidelines – the former also having missed the majority of the second half last season. Matheus Franca, who has played just 381 minutes since signing in August 2023, is sidelined with yet another injury, this time to his adductor, while Chadi Riad (anterior cruciate ligament) is not expected back until October at the earliest. Palace's Wembley triumph – and Glasner's role in it – cemented his status as one of the most celebrated figures in the club's history but the 50-year-old revealed he surprisingly still enjoys a great deal of anonymity in London. 'I get recognised a little bit more,' he said. 'But yesterday we had this Premier League meeting, I went by tube there and back. No selfies, nothing. 'So that's the positive of everybody having their phone, because nobody looks at me, everybody looks at their phone, so it's still nice to move through London.' Asked if perhaps not sporting his lucky black jumper from Palace's run to the FA Cup played a factor in rendering him unrecognisable, Glasner confirmed: 'The jumper has done its job. The jumper is retired.'

Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha explained real reason for Benjamin Sesko's Man Utd decision

Manchester United completed the signing of Benjamin Sekso, and fellow new recruits Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha understand the striker's reason for joining the club Manchester United's new signings prove that joining the club remains a dream move due to the Red Devils' legacy. Ruben Amorim's side have brought in three highly-rated forwards this summer, despite the prospect of a year without European football. ‌ United may have been concerned about their remaining pulling power in the transfer market after finishing 15th in the Premier League and losing the Europa League final last season. It was not the ideal sales pitch to convince top players to join Amorim's squad, combined with the financial implications of missing out on a Champions League spot to Tottenham Hotspur. ‌ However, in their latest transfer coup, the Red Devils beat Newcastle United to the signing of striker Benjamin Sesko. Fellow new arrivals Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, who was also wanted by the Magpies, have already explained why the trio had their hearts set on heading to Old Trafford. ‌ Upon becoming United's first summer signing, Cunha said: 'It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player. Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games on TV at my grandmother's house, United was my favourite English team and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. I want to thank my family and everyone who has helped me make that dream a reality. Echoing Cunha's message, Mbeumo explained that he was a boyhood United fan, demonstrating the club's lasting appeal: 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up.' Sir Alex Ferguson may have retired more than a decade ago but the club's glory days live long in the memory, even for 22-year-old Sesko. "The history of Manchester United is obviously very special but what really excites me is the future,' the striker said. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon.' United's ability to secure deals for their top targets is in stark contrast to what Newcastle have endured this summer. Several forwards, including Mbeumo and Sesko, have chosen other clubs over Eddie Howe's side, despite the club winning a trophy and qualifying for the Champions League last term. Their struggles to sign a striker have also added another layer to Alexander Isak's transfer saga. Meanwhile, United boss Amorim will be happy to have assembled his new-look forward line. The Red Devils were in urgent need of a centre-forward, following Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee's struggles up front, and Amorim believes Sesko is the right man to lead the line. ‌ "He has the characteristics that we needed," Amorim told MUTV. "Ben is a player - with all the information that we have - that we need to stop the guy from working, not the opposite! "So that is also important. He's really young. He's good in the air, he's good at running the channels, good on the ball. I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot and, for sure, he is going to feel at home in our club. He has the right character to be in this group, so I'm really happy to have him." ‌ However, United have not finished their summer rebuild. Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, who is valued at around £100m, has emerged as the club's next target as United look to fix another area of the team. The Red Devils welcomed club icon David De Gea back to Old Trafford during their final pre-season fixture on Saturday. United drew 1-1 with Fiorentina as Amorim continued his team's preparations ahead of their season opener against Arsenal next Sunday.

Marko Lazetic to Aberdeen fee and deal structure revealed as Milan transfer enters final stage

The striker is set to become Jimmy Thelin's latest summer recruit Aberdeen have agreed a bargain deal that will see them land Marko Lazetic on a free and for just a 20 per cent sell-on. ‌ Record Sport broke the story that the Scottish Cup winners had agreed a deal with AC Milan for their Serbian under-21 international. ‌ The Italian giants had initially wanted a 50 per cent and that had been a sticking point over the last couple of weeks. ‌ AC Milan had been holding out for the enhanced sell-on to try and recoup as much of the £3.5million they had paid Red Star back in 2022. Reports in Italy last night claimed that it was a 50 per cent sell-on but they are well wide of the mark. The Dons stood firm because it didn't fall into their player trading model. They have seen it in the past when they gave Benfica a 50 per cent sell-on for Duk. Aberdeen were helped by the fact that Lazetic made it clear that he wanted to make the move to Pittodrie. They are now in the process of finalising the move. ‌ Lazetic will sign a long-term deal subject to a medical and a visa being issued. The Dons are pushing to get everything in place for the 21-year-old to be registered ahead of their Europa League play-off, where they will face the winners of FCSB and Drita. ‌ Manager Jimmy Thelin is still looking to add another three signings, on top of Lazetic, before the close of the window.
