‘Thug Life' day 5 box office collection: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film continues to struggle

The Hindu19 hours ago

Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, continues to struggle at the box office. After the fifth day of it's worldwide release, the pan-Indian film paled in comparison with Housefull 5, the big Bollywood release of last week.
According to the portal Sacnilk.com, the gangster drama took its domestic earnings to 40.52 crore with a ₹3.62 crore earning on June 09, 2025 (Monday). The Tamil version of the movie made ₹3.25 crore while the Telugu and the Hindi versions collected ₹29 and ₹8 lakh respectively.
The global worldwide gross of Thug Life stands at ₹75 crore. On the contrary, Housefull 5, despite negative reviews, managed to rake up ₹13.76 crore on the same day. The fifth film in the well-known franchise stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Jacqueline Fernandez, Kriti Kharbanda among others.
For Kamal Haasan, who co-produced Thug Life under his banner Raaj Kamal Films International, the movie's poor show comes on the back of the disastrous performance of Indian 2, directed by S Shankar. Mani Ratnam, on the other hand, had a delivered a humungous hit with his Ponniyin Selvan films, before Thug Life.
Also starting Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Joju George and Nasser, the Thug Life has music from A R Rahman and cinematography from Ravi K Chandran. Sreekar Prasad has done the editing for the movie.

The Hindu review of the movie said, 'It doesn't help that the film fails to add more to its archaic fight-for-the-throne conflict at the centre of the film. Subplots and layers seem added purely for convenience, like a character that returns in the climax to serve a meagre purpose.
Despite a master filmmaker at the helm, all the star power in its arsenal and the right ingredients to make a heady modern gangster drama, it makes you grope in the dark for its beating heart.'

Thug Life to soon release on OTT? Amid poor box office performance, here's what we know about Kamal Haasan's film

Kamal Haasan's latest release Thug Life might be released on OTT sooner than expected, as per multiple reports. The film marks the reunion between filmmaker Mani Ratnam and Haasan. It ran into trouble due to Haasan's controversial 'Tamil-Kannada" remark and suffered a major loss at the box office over its blockage in Karnataka. Thug Life is a gangster drama, also starring Silambarasan. Before its release on June 5, Kamal Haasan had shared that Thug Life would mark its OTT debut after 8 weeks of its theatrical release. The film is said to be streamed online on Netflix. It seems Thug Life can be out on OTT after four weeks of its theatrical release now, reported M9 News. Reportedly, the OTT giant is evaluating the 8-week schedule since the film received an underwhelming response at the box office. Thug Life was released on Thursday and saw a decent start, making a business of ₹ 15. 5 crore [Tamil: ₹ 13.35 crore; Hindi: 0.65 crore; Teleugu: 1.5 crore]. However, over the first weekend, instead of showing growth, the film saw a sharp decline in its earnings. On Monday, it only minted ₹ 2.3 crore [Tamil: ₹ 1.9 crore ; Hindi: 0.1 crore; Telugu: ₹ 0.3 crore]. Going by the early estimates now, the film made ₹ 1.75 crore on Tuesday. However, the makers of the film are yet to make an official announcement about the OTT release. Talking about Thug Life's OTT release, Kamal Haasan was quoted saying by PTI, "It is not even an experiment, it's a pragmatic thing to do. I'm glad that the OTT (Netflix) agreed. We sat together, and it was not a negotiation. It's a plan, which maybe others could follow. 'It will make the industry healthy and we are glad that we were the first to be there to avail of that opportunity.' Thug Life is directed by Mani Ratnam, and co-written by Kamal Haasan who is also starring in the lead. It also stars Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf. The film is produced by Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies.

Rajesh Khanna's film was once banned by censor board due to…, was later released when…, had special connection with former PM Jawaharlal Nehru, lead actress is…

In the early 1970s, 80s, and 90s of Bollywood, enacting bold scenes on-screen didn't always go well with the audience. The hesitation to perform certain scenes often made actors and actresses uncomfortable. However, did you know there was a movie by India's very first superstar, the late legendary actor Rajesh Khanna, which left the audience stunned—even before reaching them, the film made jaws drop at the censor board? The film shook everyone because of its storyline, and the explicit scenes created a massive uproar among fans. Interestingly, the film also had a special connection with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Yes, you read that right! Rajesh Khanna did the movie at a time when his career was witnessing a downfall. It brought him the much-needed limelight once again. If you are wondering which movie we are talking about, it is called Red Rose. Released in 1980, the movie was a remake of the Tamil film Sigappu Rojakkal. The original version featured Kamal Haasan and Sridevi in the lead roles. Coming back to Rajesh Khanna's film, the female lead opposite him was Poonam Dhillon. Fans have always loved Kaka as a romantic actor. However, to their surprise, the movie featured Khanna as a serial killer, which did not sit well with the audience. On the other hand, a picture of Poonam, wherein she is in a bathtub wearing minimal clothing, was used for promotional posters. This made the actress extremely upset. It was a huge risk for Rajesh Khanna, as in the movie his character was far from the sane and romantic man he was known for. Instead, he played a rich but mentally unstable businessman named Anand, who would first trap girls in love and then brutally murder them. Censorship The plot of the movie was considered extremely bold by the censor board. Hence, the board took a tough call and gave the film an 'A certificate'. But after watching the film, the board remarked, 'How can a superstar do such a dirty thing? This is not fit for public viewing.' Upon facing this censorship fiasco, the makers were left with only one option: to approach the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. After a lot of struggle, they finally received a green signal for the release. Special Connection with Jawaharlal Nehru Did you know the movie had a connection with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru? Yes, throughout the movie, Rajesh Khanna kept a red rose in his pocket, a symbol associated with Jawaharlal Nehru. This similarity did not go down well with the censor board either. After a long battle and delay, the movie was finally released on the big screens. Sadly, it did not perform well and was considered a flop.
