WUG 2025: Azeem Fails To Make 200m Final, Admits Not Ready For Two Events
BOCHUM (Germany), July 25 (Bernama) -- National sprinter Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi failed to qualify for the men's 200-metre (m) final at the 2025 Rhine-Ruhr World University Games (WUG) in Lohrheidestadion here early Friday morning Malaysian time.
The 21-year-old Auburn University student clocked 21.51 seconds (s), slower than his first-round time of 21.26s set yesterday.

South Africa's Bayanda Walaza, who claimed the 100m title, maintained his strong performance by topping the heat with a time of 20.76s, followed by Adria Medero of Spain (20.77s) and Christopher Ius of Australia (20.85s).
Speaking to reporters after the race, Muhammad Azeem admitted to suffering from fatigue after competing over four consecutive days, including the 100m event.
'I still ran today to prove that I belong here, and I want to compete, not just participate. After today's race, I realised my body's condition isn't ready to handle two events in one meet.
'But this is a good preparation for 2026 because I plan to run in both the 100m and 200m. The vision is clearer now, so I wouldn't say I'm disappointed because I know this isn't my main event,' he said.
According to Muhammad Azeem, this was his first time competing in two events at a single meet since his school days.
'It's definitely tough. If you look at it, only Walaza is doing well in both events, and the rest specialise in the 200m.

Malaysia captures third spot at Genting World Lion Dance Championship

The championship saw nine teams from six countries and territories - Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Myanmar, China and Taiwan - vie for the championship title in the final. Malaysia, through the maiden participation of the Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, earned 9.59 points to be placed third and took home USD6,000 cash, a trophy and medals presented by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Michael Oh Head, one of the troupe's lion dancers, said that although there was some pressure representing Malaysia, the team gave their best performance. 'We will continue to train until we achieve better results and improved performances. We also hope to be given more opportunities to represent Malaysia and achieve success, thus bringing glory to the country,' he told Bernama after the prize-giving ceremony. Two other Malaysian teams - Kwong Ngai Lion Dance and Malaysia Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Dance Rawang Selangor - also made it to the final. The Kwong Ngai Lion Dance troupe finished seventh with 8.89 points, while the team from Rawang had to withdraw after one of its members sustained a leg injury. Malaysian Lion Dance Association advisor Siow Ho Phiew expressed his pride and satisfaction with the national teams' achievements, while describing the success of the three Malaysian teams reaching the final as a significant accomplishment that elevated the country's reputation on the international stage. 'Yes, I am satisfied with the performances of the Malaysian teams today. When it comes to major championships, we must work hard and compete in Genting to become world champions or succeed in other competitions,' he said. The Genting championship saw the Singapore B Team, represented by Yi Mei Athletic Association, crowned champion with 9.78 points while their counterparts, Singapore A, also represented by the same association, finished second with 9.66 points. The two teams took home USD18,000 and USD10,000 respectively, along with trophies and medals.
