UT's EV ecosystem gets thrust with high-performing charging hubs

Chandigarh: The city is finally getting the hang of plugging in its electric vehicles (EVs) at the public EV charging stations. A year after the charging stations started to become operational, the usage sharply increased.
In June 2024, the total usage of charging stations, in terms of revenue generated, amounted to only Rs 2732. However, in May 2025, the public charging stations generated a total revenue of nearly Rs 6.4 lakh. In the first year of its operations, the charging stations generated nearly Rs 40 lakh.
The first two charging stations were made operational at parking opposite Elante Mall and Lake Sport Club parking in May 2024.
These started to generate revenue after one month of their operations, which was Rs 2732 in June 2024. However, the same charging stations generated revenue 21 times higher in May 2025 at Rs 58458. The installation of charging stations by CREST began in January last year, following location clearance from the Chandigarh MC.
There was a delay in the operationalisation of the charging stations due to multiple instances of theft of charging gun cables.

The stations finally started to become operational in May 2024. Currently, the public EV charging stations are operational at 35 locations across the city.
EV owners are using some charging stations more than others. For instance, charging stations at the parking area, Car Bazar Manimajra, generated revenue of Rs 81,408, and Opp Sector 17 High Court Extension generated Rs 53,000 in May this year. During the same period, Parking Near Jagat Cinema (TDI), Sector-17, Chandigarh, generated revenue of Rs 126, and Sector-34 Zone-II paid parking area generated Rs 4 as revenue.
The Chandigarh EV Policy 2022 envisaged the setting up of 100 charging stations across UT by covering at least one charging station in every parking area. However, the administration later decided to limit the number to 35 stations for the time being.
"The administration wants to see the public response and usage of these public charging stations, and if required, it can go in for more stations across the city," said the official. A key challenge for the administration is to keep the charging stations in parking areas exclusively for EVs. In some instances, other categories of vehicles, like diesel and petrol vehicles, are also parked. "Initially, it was a major issue, but over time, the problem has sharply diminished.
As more EVs are using the charging stations, the opportunity for other types of vehicles to park here has diminished. Also, public awareness has improved in this regard," said the official.

Agencies Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw India is building a commercial-scale silicon-based fabrication facility (fab) that will churn out 50,000 wafer starts per month, even as such fabs usually operate at 20,000-40,000 wafer starts per month, electronics and information technology (IT) minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Friday. The minister was referring to the Rs 91,000 crore fab being built by Tata Electronics in Gujarat's Dholera, which was approved in February last year. In semiconductor manufacturing, a wafer is a thin, circular slice of a crystalline semiconductor material, most commonly silicon, upon which integrated circuits are fabricated. "Six semiconductor units, one fab and five Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging units, are at different stages of planning, construction and execution. Four more (one silicon carbide fab and three ATMP including the most advanced packaging unit) were approved last week. The entire ecosystem - design, fabrication, packaging, equipment, chemicals, gases - taking shape in Bharat," Vaishnaw said in a post on social media platform X. Two of the largest equipment manufacturers—Applied Materials and Lam Research—are setting up their design, production, and validation facilities in the country, he added. Elaborating on the PM's statement, Vaishnaw said semiconductor industry pioneer Robert Noyce had come to India to set up a plant in 1964, but the erstwhile Permit Raj implemented by the ruling Congress Party back then did not allow him to. Royce then moved to Hong Kong and founded global tech major Intel Corporation, Vaishnaw claimed in his post. Nicknamed "the Mayor of Silicon Valley," Robert Noyce was an American physicist and entrepreneur who co-founded Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957 and Intel Corporation in 1968. Visakhapatnam: The Steel City bus depot, famously known as Kurmannapalem depot, will become history as the RTC authorities reportedly decided to wind up the depot as the lease period of the depot would be completed by November. The higher authorities decided to vacate the land owned by the Vizag Steel Plant (VSP), which has been demanding above 133 crore to extend the lease period to another 33 years. The plant management did not agree to the nominal price. The Steel City Bus Depot was set up by the RTC in 1990 at Kurmannapalem to cater to the needs of the public of Steel Plant, Steel Township, Kurmannapalem, and surrounding areas. They took eight acres of land from the VSP on lease at a price of above 8 lakh. RTC constructed a boundary wall and a garage on five acres, and a bus complex and administrative building on another three acres. For this, it spent around 5 crore. In the recent meeting, the RTC MD allegedly asked the local authorities to shift the buses in the depot as early as possible by August 31. The authorities of RTC wrote to the steel plant to continue the lease period with allegedly around 35 crore. The RTC MD asked the local authorities to shift the buses to other depots by August 31. All the 84 buses in the depot, including 50 RTC buses and the remaining hired buses, would be accommodated in the Gajuwaka, Simhachalam, Maddilapalem, and Madhurawada depots. There are buses running from Steel Plant or Kurmannapalem (No. 211) to Vizianagaram-Kurmannapalem that would be accommodated in Vizianagaram, sources said. Likewise, Anakapalli to Steel Plant area buses would be accommodated at Anakapalli. When contacted, the Visakhapatnam Regional Manager of RTC, Appala Naidu, said that they have been corresponding with the VSP and are yet to make a decision.
