South Korea sends top officials to US in final push to avert 25pc tariff threat as Aug 1 deadline approaches

Malay Mail26-07-2025
SEOUL, July 26 — South Korea's deputy prime minister will meet with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent next week, ahead of Washington's deadline to reach a trade deal, Seoul's presidential office said today.
US President Donald Trump's administration has threatened South Korea with a 25 per cent tariff if a trade deal is not reached by August 1.
'Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yun-cheol and Foreign Minister Cho Hyun are scheduled to meet US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of State Marco Rubio next week,' the presidential office said in a statement.
The statement came during a meeting at the presidential office where Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan reported on the outcome of his talks with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on Thursday.
'The government has pledged to devote its full efforts to concluding trade negotiations with Washington before the August 1 deadline,' the statement said.
The presidential office added that Seoul confirmed Washington's 'strong interest in the shipbuilding sector' and agreed to work towards mutual cooperation in the industry.
The announcement of the meeting comes after last week's scheduled talks were cancelled due to Bessent's 'urgent schedule'.
South Korea's shipbuilding industry has become a useful bargaining chip for the country as Trump has shown significant interest in the sector.
South Korea ranks as the world's second-largest shipbuilding nation, trailing only behind China.
Amid rising tensions in the Taiwan Strait, the United States is turning to overseas shipyards to strengthen its Asia-Pacific operations, casting South Korea as a key defence partner.
In 2024, Hanwha Ocean, one of South Korea's largest shipbuilders, became the first non-US company authorised to conduct dry-dock maintenance on a US Navy vessel. — AFP

Indian and Philippine navies hold joint patrols in disputed South China Sea ahead of Marcos' visit to New Delhi

MANILA, Aug 4 — Indian Navy warships have begun patrolling areas of the disputed South China Sea with their Philippine counterparts for the first time, Manila's military said Monday, as President Ferdinand Marcos departed for a state visit to New Delhi. The two-day sail includes three Indian vessels and started yesterday, a day before Marcos left on a trip that will include talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Philippines has heightened defence cooperation with a range of allies over the past year after a series of clashes in the South China Sea. Beijing claims nearly the entirety of the waterway despite an international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis. India's naval vessels, including the guided missile destroyer INS Delhi, arrived in Manila for a port visit late last week. The patrol 'started yesterday afternoon, then it's ongoing up to this moment... the activity at the moment is replenishment at sea,' Lieutenant Colonel John Paul Salgado told AFP. While in India, Marcos is expected to sign pacts in such fields as law, culture and technology, according to Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq, but all eyes will be on any potential defence agreements. Before departing Monday, Marcos praised the two countries' 'steadfastness in upholding international maritime law, including the UNCLOS', the UN treaty granting an exclusive economic zone within 200 nautical miles (370 kilometres) of a country's shores. The Philippines has previously purchased BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India, a weapon which has a top speed of 3,450 kilometres (2,140 miles) per hour. India, which has engaged in border clashes with China in the Himalayas, is a member of the so-called Quad, a group that includes fellow democracies the United States, Japan and Australia. Beijing has repeatedly alleged that the four-way partnership, first conceived by late Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe, was created as a way of containing China. — AFP

Malaysia maintains national interests in US trade negotiations

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has upheld its national interests while securing improved trade terms with the United States, ensuring protections for strategic industries and Bumiputera provisions remain intact. Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz clarified that the country did not compromise its policies for preferential treatment. 'The United States grants Malaysia equivalent rates due to our importance as a major trading partner and our ability to offer high-quality trade and investment commitments, even without full sectoral liberalisation,' he said during a Dewan Rakyat briefing. Tengku Zafrul highlighted that the new tariff rate of 19 per cent, a six-point reduction from the initial July 2025 announcement, reflects Malaysia's strong position in global trade. 'This proves developing nations can engage internationally without surrendering to extreme liberalisation pressures,' he added. The minister noted that Malaysia and the US are finalising a joint statement outlining negotiated outcomes and mutual commitments. Discussions on a Reciprocal Trade Agreement will continue to ensure implementation. The US remains Malaysia's top export destination (RM198.65 billion in 2024) and a key foreign investor (RM32.82 billion). - Bernama
