Shillong: A cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday approved the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy, 2025.
"After receiving over 200 stakeholder feedback on the Draft Meghalaya Film Policy, we incorporated the inputs and presented the final policy to the cabinet for approval.
Recognising Meghalaya's potential as a filmmaking hub in the northeast, we are launching the Meghalaya Film Tourism Policy 2025 to tap into this opportunity," he said.

City in pole position for CWG with eye on 2036 Olympics

Ahmedabad: Eight years after earning the Unesco tag as India's first World Heritage City, Ahmedabad is chasing another global title — host of the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG). On Wednesday, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), at its Special General Meeting, placed the city among the top contenders — a move widely seen as a dress rehearsal for the bigger prize: the 2036 Olympics. Ahmedabad's bid is anchored by the Rs 6,000-crore Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave — a 236-acre, Olympic-grade complex being developed through a state–AUDA public-private partnership. Scheduled for completion in 2029, it will feature the Narendra Modi Stadium (the world's largest cricket venue), a 50,000-seat football stadium, an 18,000-seat indoor arena, a 12,000-seat aquatics centre, an athletes' village, plus hotels and commercial hubs. Supporting facilities include the Naranpura Sports Complex and a network of mini-sports centres across city zones, with Rs 125 crore earmarked for grassroots infrastructure in Naroda, Ghuma, and beyond. A senior sports department official said Gujarat had conveyed its CWG intent to Chris Jenkins OBE, then president of Commonwealth Sport, during his Jan 2025 visit — a proposal later backed by the union ministry of youth affairs and sports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like If you have a mouse, play this game for 1 minute Navy Quest Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad | Gold Rates Today in Ahmedabad | Silver Rates Today in Ahmedabad Infrastructure upgrades are keeping pace with the bid. The Rs 3,130-crore integrated terminal at Sardar Vallabhbhai International (SVPI) Airport — set to double passenger capacity before 2030 — aligns with CWG and Olympic timelines. Metro extensions, BRTS upgrades, and a multi-modal transport hub are also planned. The hospitality sector is expanding rapidly. The Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Ltd (SRFDCL) has cleared a 17-storey hotel and a Rs 792.5 crore Convention, Cultural and Business Centre near Paldi, while global hotel brands are increasing their presence along Sindhu Bhavan Road and in GIFT City. The city's confidence draws on its record of hosting marquee events — from the ICC World Cup final to Vibrant Gujarat Summits and the sold-out Coldplay concert in Jan 2025. Gujarat is also eyeing the 2027 Women's Volleyball World Championship and the World Military Games to further burnish its credentials. Officials said the plan is to stage a "full-fledged Games" featuring medal-rich sports like shooting, wrestling, and badminton, alongside indigenous disciplines such as kabaddi and kho kho. Ahmedabad's CWG blueprint takes cues from Birmingham 2022's cost-effective delivery and Euro 70-million local reinvestment, including a jobs and skills academy that trained over 20,000 people. The city's version will be guided by an Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) impact study to ensure transparency and sustainability. Commissioned by the Gujarat Sports Infrastructure Development Company (GSIDC Ltd), and to be conducted over the next six months, the studies aim to evaluate the potential impacts on Ahmedabad and Gujarat, ensuring alignment with global sustainability standards. The studies will focus on identifying and standardizing relevant environmental metrics, design of a stakeholder engagement framework for environmental assessment, and assessment of carbon emissions associated with the Games. Kitne Aadmi Thhe: Music stores remember the record that changed the industry for ever

Kolkata: In 1975, the release of 'Sholay' marked a pivotal moment in Bollywood, not just for its groundbreaking action sequences but for its revolutionary approach to film soundtracks. The film's music and dialogues became a cultural phenomenon, especially in Kolkata, where fans eagerly played the LPs and EPs until they wore out. This was the first time Bollywood embraced stereo sound, offering an immersive auditory experience that captivated audiences. Shiladitya Chaudhury, a music enthusiast and composer, recalls how the soundtrack was already a sensation before the film hit theaters. Radio Ceylon teased audiences with songs like 'Koi Haseena Jab Mil Jaaye', but it was the inclusion of Gabbar Singh's iconic dialogues and RD Burman 's evocative background score on vinyl that truly set it apart. This was more than just music; it was a sonic experience that fans relished on their home record players. Polydor Records, a newcomer in the Indian market, took a bold step by purchasing the music rights from the Sippys for Rs 5 lakh, outbidding industry giant HMV. This gamble paid off spectacularly, as Polydor sold five times the number of records needed to break even, cementing its place in the industry. Prem Gupta, from the Symphony shop in New Market, noted that 'Sholay' was instrumental in establishing Polydor's reputation. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata | Gold Rates Today in Kolkata | Silver Rates Today in Kolkata The soundtrack's success was due in large part to RD Burman's innovative use of music. His compositions were ahead of their time, incorporating French horns, eerie cello wails, and even beer-bottle percussion. The six-track stereo recording was a rarity in India, requiring meticulous coordination and international collaboration for mixing. This technical achievement transformed the Indian film music scene, setting a new standard for future productions. The release of LPs featuring the film's dialogues was another groundbreaking move. Fans were not only captivated by the music but also by the memorable lines delivered by characters like Jai, Veeru, Basanti, and Gabbar Singh. These dialogues became an integral part of the film's appeal. While 'Sholay' wasn't technically the first 70mm or six-track stereo film, it was the first to combine these elements with a blockbuster narrative. The result was a sensory feast, with every sound meticulously crafted to enhance the viewing experience. Amit Sarkar, a sound engineer, highlighted how even the fight effects were reworked in London to deliver the satisfying 'dishum dishum' that audiences loved. The film's music also broke new ground with the use of a synthesizer in 'Yeh Dosti', signaling the playful rivalry and friendship between Jai and Veeru. Nearly five decades later, the sounds of 'Sholay' continue to resonate in popular culture. From Gabbar's gravelly 'Kitne aadmi the?' to Burman's galloping themes, the film's soundtrack remains a testament to the transformative power of music in cinema. In 1975, 'Sholay' wasn't just a film release; it was a revolution on vinyl. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
