Women's Startup Expo brings local talents and flavours to Panampilly Nagar
The two-day event which commenced on Friday is organised by Panampilly Nagar Welfare Association. It showcases 28 women-led ventures from across the state, offering them a platform for networking, learning and growth.
"We started with just home-based businesses, but now we have women from different districts bringing in everything from artisanal crafts to gourmet foods," said organiser Beena Benjamin.
Among the participants is 65-year-old Lovely Vincent, a retired bank employee turned entrepreneur.
Selling crunchy Kerala-style banana chips under her brand Tentappee, she said the expo gave her more than just sales. "I was part of the last edition of expo which offered a one-of-a-kind experience," she shared.
For Ragitha V M, the expo is about bringing back authentic flavours. Unable to find the original taste of her favourite sweet, boli, she started Swasthia Foods to make Thiruvananthapuram-style boli without adulterants.
"At fairs like this, we see the consumers' reactions instantly. That is far more satisfying than selling to shops," she said.
The event is also a fundraiser for local community projects, including upkeep of parks and medians. "Corporation does not have adequate funds for renovation work in the area, so the association is stepping in. Proceeds from the expo will go into improving local infrastructure," Benjamin explained.

Now, 100-metre FOB Connects Mumbai Metro 3 with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2
Mumbai: Catching a flight from Terminal 2 just got easier. A newly constructed 100-metre Foot Over Bridge (FOB) now links the CSMIA–T2 Metro Station on Line 3 directly to the airport terminal, allowing passengers to skip road traffic and walk straight from the Metro to the check-in counters. Built 23 metres above ground with strong structural steel, the bridge connects Lift Entry/Exit A1 of the Metro station at ground level directly into the terminal building. The 4.3-metre-wide and 3-metre-high structure sits above the ongoing Metro Line 7A station works, ensuring faster, safer, and seamless transfer for air travellers. "100-metre-long FOB to CSMIAirport T2 from underground Metro 3 station is opened. This facilitates much-needed last-mile connectivity to Mumbai Airport from the Metro station. Thank you MMRDA for providing the FOB on our request," said Ashwini Bhide, Managing Director, MMRCL. Passengers no longer need to negotiate busy road crossings, and those carrying luggage will find the connection much easier. The spokesperson added that the construction posed significant challenges as the bridge had to be built high above the ongoing underground Metro works. On July 28, senior officials from the BMC, MMRCL, MMRDA, and Indian Railways met at the civic headquarters to discuss ways of improving last-mile connectivity. The discussions centred on integrating pedestrian infrastructure with the city's expanding underground transit system. One of the first integration projects in the pipeline is a 1-km pedestrian subway linking Acharya Atre Chowk Metro station to the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road's parking facility at Haji Ali. A 160-metre arm is also planned to connect to nearby open spaces. BMC and MMRCL have already been working on the alignment since June. A senior official added that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared in the next four months, with the vision of connecting high-density commercial hubs within a 500-m to 1-km radius. Equipped with escalators and elevators, these will be accessible for all commuters. Metro Line 3, also called the Aqua Line, is Mumbai's first fully underground Metro corridor. Retired employees of Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society seek pension
Photo by S Parthiban SALEM: Retired employees of Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society have requested the state govt to grant them pension, like that provided to those who retire from the District Milk Producers' Cooperative Union and the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited. The dairy sector has three levels in the state: the Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society, the District Milk Producers Cooperative Union and the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited. Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society employees play vital roles, including sourcing high-quality milk and supplying it to the district unions. However, they do not receive any retirement benefits. They have requested the govt to provide them pension at least on compassionate grounds. They have sought inclusion in the medical insurance scheme. They have also sought provision of 500 ml of free milk every day and sweets and ghee during festive times. At present, around 2,000 retired employees are waiting for their pension. "The central government's EPF (employees' provident fund) scheme was initiated in September 1995 to offer pensions to retired employees of these three organizations who have served in the same capacity," Tamil Nadu Primary Milk Cooperative Society Retired Employees' Association president P Ramakrishnan told TOI. He noted that less than 50% of the primary milk producers cooperative societies in the state have enrolled in this scheme. Furthermore, those who have registered under this initiative receive pensions that range from Rs1,000 to Rs 2,374 monthly. Ramakrishnan urged chief minister M K Stalin to establish a fund to assist the retired employees of the Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society. A Annadurai, the managing director of the Tamil Nadu Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited, has indicated that there is currently no dedicated fund for providing pensions to retired employees of the Primary Milk Producers Cooperative Society. He mentioned that the special bylaws of the association do not include any provisions for pensions. "Nonetheless, it has been communicated that in the future, as employees of the association express their willingness to contribute to a pension fund, the feasibility of offering pensions based on the accumulated funds and interest will be evaluated," he said. Will intensify fight against power sector privatisation: AIPEF
Patiala: The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) plans to intensify its efforts to resist the privatisation of the power sector amid mounting pressure from both central and state governments. Established in 1973 by eminent power engineers including Harbans Singh, R S Verma, Bhopal Singh, Shrikant Mane, Chidambaram, R S S Chauhan, J C Marathe, Padamjit Singh, and Shailendra Dubey, the AIPEF, in a press release, said its mission is to improve the power supply situation in the country and safeguard the interests of the power engineers' fraternity. In Uttar Pradesh, it said, the state govt is attempting to privatisise two discoms, while Maharashtra is pushing for privatisation through parallel licensing. These privatisation initiatives include tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB), monetisation of transmission assets, and the formation of joint ventures, it said. AIPEF criticised these moves, asserting that both central and state govts are determined to privatisise the power sector regardless of the profitability of state discoms. The federation contends, the release said, that the government views electricity as a business rather than a service to consumers, and argues that privatisation has not improved the sector's efficiency or affordability. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Best SIP Plans for NRIs in Belarus – Get ₹2L Monthly Pension | Invest ₹18K PB Learn More Undo The federation attributed the current crisis to a non-professional bureaucratic approach by central and state govts towards the power sector. Over the years, the Centre has progressively encroached upon state authority, frequently amending the Electricity Law through Electricity (Amendment) Rules, it said, addign that AIPEF remains committed to overcoming the present crisis in the power sector.
