
The rise of the multi-million-euro luxury Irish wedding
The celebrity wedding planner Marcy Blum organised the May wedding of the New York couple Ally Rice and Sean Fernando Adare Manor in Co Limerick, which went viral after photos and videos were widely shared on TikTok and Instagram, in collaboration with the London production team Bespoke Events. Some suggest that the couple's three-day affair came in at a seven-figure sum.
Rory McIlroy's wedding to Erica Stoll at Ashford Castle in Co Mayo, in April 2017, is estimated to have cost about €1 million — a chunky price tag but a mere fraction of the €40 million to €50 million that Jeff Bezos, the billionaire Amazon founder, is estimated to have dropped when tying the knot with the former journalist Lauren Sánchez in a lavish, star-studded three-day event in Venice last week. And even that figure is a drop in the ocean compared with the most expensive wedding in the world, which took place last July in Mumbai. An estimated €500 million was spent on the marathon nuptials of Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani, the youngest son of Asia's richest man, Mukesh Ambani. The three-day prewedding celebrations alone cost €135 million.
The Limerick-based international luxury wedding planner Olivia Buckley regularly designs, plans and oversees destination weddings in Ireland and Europe. 'Multiday events with extensive production, bespoke structures and immersive experiences often reach into the multimillion-euro range,' she says.
She adds that from her own experience of planning super weddings of this magnitude, a budget of €3 million to €5 million would be necessary to create a truly bespoke experience. She recommends couples allow 'at least 18 months for the planning of their wedding, or up to 24 months for logistically complex experiences'. That's longer than it takes to make some movies.

One of the most elaborate aspects of the Adare wedding was the bespoke glass marquee. Buckley has facilitated similar requests over the years. 'We were once asked to create a Midsummer Night's Dream-inspired celebration, complete with Celtic symbolism, fairy folklore and set within a bespoke glass marquee.
'Costs can vary significantly, but a glass or orangery-style marquee represents a significant investment because, beyond the aesthetic elements like lighting, staging and furniture, there are essential infrastructural requirements: satellite kitchens, power, plumbing, bathroom facilities and sometimes scaffolding, depending on the site.
'Prices typically start at €250,000 and increase based on scale, guest numbers and overall design ambition.'
The glass marquee may have created a fairytale atmosphere, but €250,000 is a frightening amount of money to pay for one single element of a multiday celebration. Flowers also added hugely to the romantic vibe and fantastical feel of this wedding and Buckley estimates that the floral budget for a luxury event such as this would start at €75,000.

'Flowers can be one of the most impactful design elements when transforming a space, especially across a weekend celebration. When floral design is woven through multiple events, from welcome dinners to ceremonies and receptions, the cost naturally increases,' she explains.
Ellen Rose Bird from Dublin is a wedding content creator. In 2022 she established her company, Your Story by Elle, and since then she has witnessed weddings get bigger, bolder and more elaborate. Media teams (a content creator, photographer and videographer) are part and parcel of weddings these days, and when really large numbers of guests are involved this team can double in size, Bird explains.
Couples want their weddings to be highly personalised and experiential, she says. Add-ons such as painters making portraits of guests, custom-built walls decorated with handwritten notes for attendees, falconry shows, tennis courts, afternoon teas, picnics, rehearsal dinners and bridal brunches are all possible.
'Weddings are much more experiential these days — couples want their guests to be really well taken care of. Nobody wants to wait until ten o'clock for the party to start, so all-day entertainment is usual and bespoke cocktails and open bars are common. No guest will have to queue at the bar, though. Waiters are always on hand to serve guests.'
Buckley concurs. 'Couples are looking to offer their guests an unforgettable experience, a true escape from the everyday. We've worked with internationally renowned headliners and A-list performers, who can command fees in the range of €1 million to €2 million.'
Bird covered 50 weddings last year and she will create content for 70 couples by the end of 2025. She's noticed that brides no longer simply invest in a wedding dress but curate wedding wardrobes for their multiday celebrations.
'Embroidered robes are often worn by brides as they get ready for the ceremony. One particular bride had sourced a vintage Dior slip. I see a huge number of bespoke bridal gowns and dramatic veils, and second dresses are the norm now,' Bird says.
The wedding and event planner Sarah Riney, founder of the New York-based Clover & Ivy Events, has even seen brides have their hair cut and completely restyled between outfit changes.

Riney has regularly planned destination weddings to Ireland since she launched her business in 2018 and she reveals it's not uncommon for a client to have a bridal stylist travel with her. She reiterates that modern weddings are all about bespoke details and unique experiences.
'One of our brides wanted her wedding themed around the Disney movie Brave, another requested an enchanted forest ceremony, while another decided to marry on the Cliffs of Moher.'
Bird is currently planning her own wedding, making her especially price aware. She says that a large number of the weddings she has worked on have hit or exceeded the €1 million mark. The majority of those couples are Irish, she says, while only three were not and they were from the US.
Social media has raised awareness of what's possible, Buckley says, inspiring clients to push the boundaries and design something truly personal. 'The rise in spending is about creating an experience that feels meaningful, immersive and entirely one-of-a-kind.'

The Inverness-born former Doctor Who star told the Comedy Bang Bang podcast: 'I got married in a castle and, let me tell you, it was a sh**show. But it was amazing. 'The days leading to the wedding were sh**shows.' Entrepreneur Denice Purdie and her husband Keith Punler paid £1.2 million for Castle Toward in 2015 with plans to turn it into a five-star wedding and events venue. However, Ms Gillan's comments suggest there were still snagging issues by the time of her wedding. The event, which was attended by around 75 A-list guests, took place at Castle Toward with Gillan later sharing an image of her taken inside the venue wearing her wedding dress She said: 'No, the wedding itself was great, but just everything went wrong in the lead-up that could possibly go wrong. 'This lovely couple were showing us around the castle a year prior. They were like, 'We're going to do it up. It's going to be lovely'. It was a construction site. 'Then four days before the wedding, it was still a construction site. 'My wedding planner went in and she just saw one man with a hammer called Keith. He was like, 'I'm sorry, Gina. I should have sorted this out'. I was just like, 'what's going to happen?'' Ms Gillan, who gave birth to her first child, Clementine, in January, revealed she had initially planned for some of her nearest and dearest to stay in Castle Toward in the run-up to the ceremony, but that became impossible. 'There was no hot water. There was nowhere to cook,' she said. 'People were meant to live in the castle for a few days. There were like wires coming out of the walls and also this beautiful couple that had hosted us – and we were like, 'We would just want to end up like you' – have gone through a bitter divorce since.' However, Ms Gillan has fond memories of the day itself, saying: 'It was genuinely the most incredible time. Everyone said it was their favourite wedding that they've ever been to. But it was like Fawlty Towers, like door handles were coming off and things were going wrong, but it added to it. 'I think it just makes you go like, abandon all these expectations that you had and just sort of roll with it.' Responding to Ms Gillan's comments, Mr Punler said the castle's restoration was set back by the pandemic with 'construction costs ballooning' and a 'shortage of labour'. However, he insisted he and his staff put in a mammoth effort to get the venue ready for the event 'right up till the last minute'. He said: 'Yes it's true, there were a few snagging matters that we had to address in the lead-up. 'These are inevitable in any large-scale construction project, and for sure it would have been easier to celebrate the completion of the restoration with a smaller, low-key 'soft' event than to play host to 75 A-list guests for four nights.' Mr Punler added that, despite the 'odd hiccup', the wedding day was faultless and he has since invited the couple and their daughter back to the castle.

What the makers of the greatest true crime podcast did next
Few podcast series have been as deservedly successful as West Cork. A critical smash and word-of-mouth phenomenon seven years ago, like Serial it dealt with a historic murder, one that still haunts a community. In December 1996 the body of the French film-maker Sophie Toscan du Plantier was discovered outside her Irish holiday home. She had been bludgeoned to death. More than two decades later, nobody had been convicted of her murder. Yet for locals and the Irish garda there had always been one prime suspect, another 'blow-in', an Englishman still living amid neighbours who reviled him. What marked out West Cork was the thoughtfulness of the reporting of its husband-and-wife narrators, Sam Bungey and Jennifer Forde. This was true, twisty crime with journalistic integrity, a painterly sense of place and sensitivity to a community. Louis Theroux said it was 'possibly the best ever true crime podcast'. Patrick Radden Keefe hailed it 'a masterpiece'. It reportedly remains Audible's most successful podcast. If you haven't listened, do. So what have Bungey and Forde got up to since? In May 2021 there was a follow-up episode relating to court proceedings. But that was more than four years ago. It turns out the pair were recruited by the BBC to explore one of the deepest rabbit holes of our times: Havana syndrome. • The best podcasts and radio shows of the week If the term 'Havana syndrome' is a mystery to you, then Forde and Bungey offer a clear explainer in the ten-part Havana Helmet Club (four episodes on BBC Sounds and now airing on Radio 4). But for me the puzzle is why this promising podcasting pair chose to tackle a subject that is as well trodden as it is highly disputed. Still, it is a doozy of a story. To recap: in December 2016 American diplomatic personnel in Cuba began to report a wave of weird ailments. All said that symptoms had begun with stabbing head pressure. Most also experienced a sonic assault: a head-splittingly intense grating noise that often led to nosebleeds and nausea. When sufferers started comparing notes, they referred to the noise as 'the Thing'. In the weeks afterwards many began to experience vertigo, brain fog, migraine with aura and debilitating exhaustion. Quietly the embassy began to fly sufferers to the United States to undergo medical investigation, where scans showed signs consistent with brain trauma when there had been no injury. Meanwhile, the CIA sent a medic to investigate — who also became ill. Rumours grew about some kind of hostile action, possibly using microwave technology. But who would be the perpetrator? The US and Cuba had only just restored full diplomatic relations after decades of hostility. The Obamas' visit in spring 2016 was meant to have ushered in a more neighbourly, also potentially capitalist era. The Cubans denied any wrongdoing, but the US repatriated all but essential staff. Two rival podcasts, fronted by respected investigative journalists, went head-to-head in 2023. Havana Syndrome, from Vice, was presented by Jon Lee Anderson and Adam Entous, whose reporting for The New Yorker first brought this story to a wider audience. Their podcast investigated subsequent claimed incidents around the world and reported on CIA efforts to shut the story down — deemed gaslighting by those still struggling with long-term health needs. • Read more radio and podcast reviews The Sound, presented by Nicky Woolf (Finding Q: My Journey into QAnon; Fur and Loathing) opened in bravura style using spiritual music to invoke the Bible story of the Israelites' trumpets' blast tumbling Jericho's walls. 'Sound … as a weapon,' Woolf surmised. There was also an endearing gonzo episode in which he roped in a physicist pal to help him build a microwave device. So what does the well-narrated Havana Helmet Club have that these do not? Well, the advantage of following up. Also, for UK audiences, potentially arriving fresh at this story, an informative grounding in US-Cuban relations. This compelling podcast is well executed, but halfway through I am questioning whether there will be a smoking gun — most of their talking heads, including the wired-sounding Anglo-American they identify as 'Adam' and 'Patient Zero', have featured in others' reporting. While it is great to have Forde and Bungey back, this is not a podcast series that feels as original, or uniquely their own, as West Cork. What podcasts have you enjoyed recently? The source indicated that events preceding the split — like the plane altercation — and the subsequent rancorous court battle 'turned the kids against him as well,' though they noted that the Tree Of Life star 'doesn't blame [Jolie] for everything.' Although Pitt reportedly hopes to save his relationship with his children, a source previously revealed to why he sees his relationship with his children as 'unfixable.' Us Weekly's source said his 'biggest regret is he can't repair [his relationship with his kids],' adding, 'The case is over but there are no winners.'
