Six Kanwariyas killed, 24 injured in bus-truck collision in Jharkhand
The accident occurred around 5.30 am near the Jamuniya forest under the Mohanpur Police Station limits when the bus collided with the commercial vehicle, they said.
'Six devotees were killed and 24 others injured in the accident at Jamuniya Chowk in Deoghar. Eight of the 24 injured have been shifted to AIIMS, Deoghar, while the remaining are undergoing treatment at Sadar Hospital," Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Naman Priyesh Lakra said.
Earlier, Inspector General (Dumka Zone) Shailendra Kumar Sinha told PTI that the accident occurred after the bus with Kanwariyas on board collided head-on with the truck transporting gas cylinders.
Following the collision, the driver fell from the bus and the passenger vehicle, without anyone behind the steering wheel, continued moving for some time and stopped after hitting a stack of bricks, the IG said.
The bus was severely damaged, he added.
However, MP Nishikant Dubey, in a post on X, claimed that 18 Kanwariyas lost their lives in the accident.
'Eighteen devotees have died in a bus-truck accident during the Kanwar Yatra in the month of Shravan in Deoghar in my Lok Sabha constituency. May Baba Baidyanath Ji give strength to their families to bear the loss," he posted on X.
However, the police confirmed that only six people lost their lives, while the condition of two others is serious.
Kanwariyas are devotees of Lord Shiva.
At least 24 Kanwariyas were injured in the accident and taken to various hospitals and nearby primary health centres, including the Saraiyahat PHC in Dumka, another officer said.
Casualties may increase as the condition of several injured is serious, he added.
The district administration has been alerted after the accident, he said.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren condoled the death of the Kanwariyas and said a rescue operation was being conducted by the district administration there.
'Very sad news has been received about the deaths of devotees travelling in a bus in an accident near Jamuniya chowk in Mohanpur block of Deoghar." 'The district administration is providing medical assistance to the injured with relief and rescue operations. May Baba Baidyanath grant peace to the souls of the devotees who died in the accident and give strength to the bereaved families to bear this moment of grief," Soren posted on X.
Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar also expressed grief over the accident.
'The news of the death of many devotees in the bus accident while Kanwariyas were going to Basukinath from Deoghar is extremely sad and painful. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and pray to Baba Bholenath for speedy recovery of the injured devotees," Gangwar posted on X.
Deoghar Sub Divisional Officer Ravi Kumar said the Kanwariyas were on their way to the Basukinath temple.
As per the Civil Surgeon, Deoghar, those who died included bus driver Subhash Turi, and others – Suman Kumari from Gaya, Piyush, Vaishali, Durgawati Devi and Janki Devi from Bettiah. PTI NAM CORR MNB BDC BDC

Mob violence erupts in Yavat over social media post; 1 detained

(PTI) According to Pune rural police, soon after the post was widely shared, heated arguments ensued between members of the two communities, following which an irate mob indulged in stone pelting, set motorcycles ablaze and vandalised a bakery, houses and religious structures. Police used tear gas and resorted to a mild lathi-charge to disperse the mob. Multiple teams were mobilised to restore order in the town. The youth who posted the content has been detained, and the process to register an FIR against him at the Yavat police station was on till late Friday evening, said police. More FIRs will be registered against persons involved in vandalism and riots under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The properties and vehicles that were vandalised are in Sahakar Nagar, Station Road and Indira Nagar areas. The mob also set the house of the accused on fire. Authorities have imposed Section 144 in the affected areas to prevent further gatherings or unrest. Three platoons of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) have been deployed in the town in order to maintain law and order. Senior officials, Sunil Phulari, IG Kolhapur range; and Sandip Singh Gill, superintendent of Pune rural police, visited the spots and appealed for calm. 'We have detained a person, and the situation in the town is under control,' said Gill, warning that 'strict action will be taken against those responsible for spreading inflammatory content and engaging in violence'. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, who was in Pune on Friday, said, 'An individual posted an objectionable social media post, leading to unrest between communities. Police had to resort to mild force to disperse the crowd, but the situation is now under control.' Fadnavis condemned those deliberately trying to incite conflict. 'Some people are intentionally posting such content to create communal friction. Police will take strict action against them. No one has the right to insult any religion and its followers,' he asserted. The chief minister added that the meeting held on Thursday by the Hindu Jan Akrosh Morcha, which was attended by many BJP and NCP leaders, among others, to condemn the desecration of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Yavat on July 26, was in no way connected to Friday's incident. On July 27, citizens of all communities had protested against the incident. Ajit Pawar, deputy chief minister and guardian minister of the Pune district, visited Yavat after the violence. Pawar said, 'Police force, SRPF teams have been deployed and the situation is now under control.' Weekly markets which are set up on Friday in Yavat and adjoining villages were called off due to the tense atmosphere. By the end of the day, Phulari said, 'The situation in Yavat is now under control and peaceful. Almost all daily activities have returned to normal. We have made sufficient security arrangements with support from Pune rural police and the SRPF.'

Allegations of impotency made by wife in divorce proceedings not defamatory: HC
Pune: The Bombay high court has declared that a wife's allegations of impotency against her husband during divorce proceedings do not constitute defamation and that such claims, when made to protect a woman's interests, are a necessary part of the legal process. Dismissing a man's defamation complaint against his estranged wife and her family, Justice S M Modak in his July 17 order, made public on Friday, noted that under the Hindu Marriage Act, allegations of impotency are 'very much relevant' and can be a legitimate ground for divorce. Justice Modak stated that a wife is 'justified in making those allegations to support her interest' and to prove that she suffered cruelty in the marriage. The man had argued that his wife's claims, made in her divorce and maintenance pleas and in a separate FIR, had become part of the public record and therefore damaged his reputation. The allegations of impotency being a ground for divorce are necessary, it said. 'This court feels that when litigation between spouses arises in a matrimonial relationship, then the wife is justified in making those allegations to support her interest,' the court said, adding the same cannot be held as defamatory. The man had stated that his estranged wife had, in her pleas seeking divorce and maintenance and also in her FIR against him and his parents, claimed that he was impotent. These documents were part of the public record and hence defamatory. The woman, her father and brother had moved the high court seeking to quash a sessions court order, directing a magistrate's court to conduct an inquiry into the man's defamation complaint. The woman, in her plea to the high court, said that her husband's impotence was one of the grounds for dissolving the marriage. (PTI)
