Trauma Care Takes a Leap Forward at Samaritan Medical Center

Yahoo17-02-2025

WATERTOWN, N.Y. (WWTI) – Samaritan Medical Center has announced that it received Provisional Level III Adult Trauma Center designation by the New York State Department of Health in 2024.
Samaritan Medical Center's Annual Physician Recognition Dinner
Samaritan says the designation reflects their efforts to show preparedness and capability to offer critical advanced care for patients in their Emergency Department with traumatic injuries. In 2024, Samaritan's Emergency Department served over 30,000 patients, with more than 600 patients receiving treatment for traumatic injuries. Samaritan says this highlights the need for them to become a designated trauma center.
Level III Trauma Centers provide definitive care for patients with mild to moderate injuries, providing critical treatment closer to home. In addition to offering essential care, these centers are equipped with systems to promptly evaluate, manage, and transfer patients to Level I and II facilities when necessary. According to the NYS Department of Health, Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse is the Central New York region's only Level I Trauma Center for adults and pediatrics.
'We are honored to receive the Provisional Level III Trauma Center designation from the New York State Department of Health,' said Thomas H. Carman, President and CEO at Samaritan Medical Center. 'This designation is an important step in highlighting our trauma care capabilities, and we are eager to complete the verification process with the American College of Surgeons (ACS) to solidify our position as a comprehensive trauma care provider.'
Samaritan Medical Center is the largest hospital and only trauma center in Jefferson and Lewis Counties.
December 2024 OWL award recipients
Daniel Bryden, DO is the Trauma Medical Director for Samaritan Medical Center. 'The provisional designation is an essential first step in our long-term goal of becoming an ACS Verified Level III Trauma Center,' said Dr. Bryden. 'In the meantime, the hospital will continue to build upon its trauma care services, ensuring that patients receive the best care in their time of need.'
Samaritan Medical Center says that when the American College of Surgeons (ACS) rigorous two-year verification process is successfully completed, Samaritan will be recognized as an ACS Verified Level III Adult Trauma Center.

ESPN's Jay Harris diagnosed with prostate cancer

ESPN host Jay Harris explained that his father had prostate cancer, and as a Black man, he knows the disease carries a higher risk. Photo courtesy of ESPN June 6 (UPI) -- Longtime ESPN Sports Center anchor Jay Harris has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is scheduled to have surgery Tuesday. Harris, 60, wrote about his experience in an essay posted Thursday on ESPN's Front Row website. He said he got the news "over a month ago," NBC News reported. "It's jarring news for sure, yet unfortunately, it's not unexpected, given my family history and demographic," he wrote. Harris explained that his father had prostate cancer, and as a Black man, he knows the disease carries a higher risk. "I'm 60. It's something I've always been cognizant of, and my doctor and I talk about it every annual visit," he continued. "And I'm sharing it all with my 26-year-old son. Maybe I'm oversharing at times -- lol -- but he needs to know." The good news, Harris added, is that his PET scan showed no signs that the cancer has spread. Depending on what doctors find during the procedure, he hopes to return to work "in a month or so." "My goal in sharing this is to join the many others who also want to normalize this conversation and hopefully provide a bit of guidance and preparation, just as it has been offered to me," he wrote. About 1 in 8 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the American Cancer Society. It's the second-leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. Most cases are diagnosed in men age 65 and older, and Black men are more likely to get it and die from it, the ACS notes. If caught early, many forms of prostate cancer have a five-year survival rate above 99%, according to the ACS. Harris said one of the most meaningful parts of the experience so far has been the support and stories that others have shared, NBC News reported. "Whenever I've mentioned my diagnosis, invariably I've gotten, 'Oh, my cousin did the radiation,' or 'My father had the surgery,' or 'My uncle went through that years ago. Do you want me to ask him to call you?' " Harris wrote. More information The American Cancer Society explains which men need to be screened for prostate cancer. Copyright © 2025 HealthDay. NYPD is trying to get arrest warrant for cruel city-funded babysitter caught on video beating tots with belt: sources

The NYPD is trying to get an arrest warrant for the cruel city-funded babysitter caught on video beating two helpless Bronx boys with a belt – nearly a month after the family reported the heinous child abuse, law enforcement sources said Tuesday. Cops have been staking out the area surrounding the home of 24-year-old La'keysha Jackson, who was allegedly caught on video beating the crying children, 4 and 6, nearly 60 times inside the family's Morrisania building on May 6, according to the sources. The NYPD was there as recently as Tuesday morning – but Jackson was nowhere to be found and could not be apprehended, the law enforcement sources said. 5 The NYPD is trying to get an arrest warrant for La'keysha Jackson, 24, caught on video beating two young boys with a belt. Courtesy Daniel Szalkiewicz If an arrest warrant is issued when a grand jury convenes on Wednesday, then cops can forcibly enter Jackson's apartment and take her into custody, according to the sources. The footage obtained by The Post of the heartbreaking scene shows the callous caretaker whipping the underwear-clad children's behinds and restraining their tiny arms as they try in vain to deflect the blows. 'Guess what's about to happen?' she can be heard saying, apparently upset that the two older kids, aged 4 and 6, did not clean up their room. 5 Police have tried but so far failed to track down Jackson (pictured), the sources said. Facebook / Lakeysha Jackson 'Belt?' one of the young boys answers as Jackson, wearing a T-shirt with the words 'Heaven Sent,' pulls a thick brown belt out of a cross-body bag. 'You're right — I warned y'all,' she replies cheerily, chillingly adding: 'Drop 'em.' Another clip shows the babysitter bizarrely wore a grotesque Halloween mask from gory slasher flick 'Terrifier II' and a Santa Claus outfit to apparently frighten the children, footage shows. The youngest boy, 2, was also a victim of Jackson's abuse, according to the family. 5 Jackson allegedly beat the older boys, 4 and 6, with a belt because they did not clean their room, sources said. Courtesy Daniel Szalkiewicz 'Hitting the kids with the [clothes] hangers, hitting them with belts, throwing the baby,' recounted their mother, Geraldine Jaramillo, who also claimed that the babysitter doled out emotional and verbal abuse to the children. Jackson was employed by home aid provider Selfhelp, contracted by the troubled ACS, through its homemaking program that provides struggling city families with a babysitter to help with caretaking, according to Jaramillo and documentation shared with The Post. 5 Jackson also apparently dressed in a grotesque Halloween mask and a Santa Claus outfit to scare the poor kids, video shows. Courtesy Daniel Szalkiewicz An ACS spokesperson said that Jackson no longer works for Selfhelp and that ACS was working with the NYPD in its investigation. 'We are taking these despicable actions very seriously, and we have commenced a review of the contracted provider's procedures,' the rep said. A Selfhelp spokesperson confirmed that Jackson had been terminated and that the company is fully cooperating with the NYPD, claiming that it performs drug testing and background checks on all their workers. 5 The children's mother, Geraldine Jaramillo, said her boys are now traumatized and more aggressive with each other. Stephen Yang The traumatized kids have since become intensely aggressive with each other, according to their mom. 'I really want to get to the bottom of this,' Jaramillo said. 'Just seeing them — it's like they are completely different kids. They are going through a lot. They may not verbalize it, but they are.'

Police search for nanny accused of violently assaulting 3 children in the Bronx

BRONX, N.Y. (PIX11) — The NYPD's Bronx Child Abuse squad is actively searching for a nanny accused of violently assaulting three children in her care. According to the family, NYC's Administration of Children Services (ACS) and Selfhelp assigned La'Keysha Jackson to care for the children aged 6, 4 and 2. More Local News On May 7, the children's grandparents, using a Nest security camera, allegedly witnessed Jackson physically abusing the two eldest children by striking them with a belt 58 times. PIX11 News has also reviewed the same video, which shows a woman hitting the children with a leather strap on the body. A short clip of that video, which goes on for about four more minutes, is shown in the video player above. The children's mother, Geraldine Jaramillo, a domestic violence survivor, was referred to ACS by the district attorney's office for supportive services while she was pregnant with her third child. ACS enrolled her in the Family Home Care program and assigned homemakers from Selfhelp Community Services, Inc., a provider certified and paid for by ACS, according to the family's attorney. Problems began when their first assigned homemaker was observed smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol while supervising the children. More: Latest News from Around the Tri-State In May 2024, ACS and Selfhelp assigned Jackson as the new nanny, according to the family. Further review of additional camera footage revealed more incidents of abuse against all three children, including the 2-year-old being slammed into a bed, and other physical and verbal abuse. Upon reviewing the video, NYPD detectives were assigned to the case. A spokesperson for the Bronx District Attorney's Office told PIX11 News that a warrant had been issued for Jackson's arrest on Monday, only after PIX11 got involved on Friday. According to the family, the children experienced significant physical injuries, such as bruised buttocks, and emotional trauma, including fear, aggression, regression, bedwetting, and discomfort with undressing. They are filing a Notice of Claim with the city and ACS on Monday. An ACS spokesperson told PIX11News, 'The safety and well-being of New York City's children is our top priority, and we hold our contracted providers to the highest professional standards. We are taking these despicable actions very seriously, and we have commenced a review of the contracted provider's procedures. The provider terminated the employee and, with the NYPD, we are investigating this incident.' Selfhelp did not immediately respond to PIX11 News' request for comment.
