‘Don't speak in Hindi here': Bengaluru auto ride argument over high fare turns into Kannada vs Hindi spat. Video
Another viral video from Bengaluru has rekindled the simmering debate over language use in the city's public spaces. This time, the flashpoint was an altercation between a woman and an auto-rickshaw driver, which began over a disputed fare and quickly spiralled into a language-related confrontation.

In the now widely circulated video, the woman—believed to be a commuter—confronts an auto driver for allegedly demanding more money than what a ride-hailing app had quoted. 'Why are you asking more than what Rapido is showing?' she asks, visibly agitated. 'Don't scream at me. I'll only pay what the app says. I'm scared,' she adds, trying to defuse the tension.
She then attempts to call another auto passing by to help explain the situation. 'Rapido is showing ₹290, but he's demanding ₹390. He's yelling at me and insisting that I speak in Kannada,' she tells the other driver.
The original auto driver, meanwhile, can be heard furiously telling her in Kannada: 'Speak in Kannada. How can you use Hindi in Bengaluru? Speak the local language first.'
Trying to maintain composure, the woman responds, 'I understand what you're saying. We're contributing to Bengaluru's economy. You can't say that. I'm trying to learn Kannada.'
The video's spread online has triggered a barrage of comments reflecting sharply divided public opinion.

One user wrote, 'It's natural for him to insist on Kannada when you begin the conversation in Hindi or English. He can explain himself best in his mother tongue. If you don't even use Google Translate to bridge the gap, don't preach about economic contribution.'
Another offered a more balanced critique, saying, 'Both seem to be in the wrong here. The woman sounds entitled and dismissive, while the auto driver is visibly aggressive.'
Others condemned the turn the argument took. 'Promoting Kannada is important and justified. Karnataka has a rich cultural heritage. But insisting on language at the cost of civility crosses a line. Bullying someone for not knowing Kannada is not pride, it's intimidation. Let's not conflate culture with coercion,' another user wrote.

Rapido Auto Fare Dispute Escalates Into Hindi-Kannada Clash
An auto driver has come under fire after a woman accused him of overcharging her and allegedly attempting to manipulate the situation by weaponizing language. What seemed to have begun as an argument over the fare of the ride had escalated and turned into a language dispute. The driver brought up the Kannada language during the argument, seemingly to divert attention and intimidate the passenger. In the viral video, it can be seen that the woman, who booked the ride on Rapido, is speaking in Hindi, and the driver is speaking in Kannada. As heard in the video, the woman had booked an auto ride on Rapido that was originally priced at Rs. 296. However, the driver allegedly demanded Rs. 390, leading to a heated argument between the two. The woman recorded a video, called out to the passing by auto rickshaw and said, "Bhaiya, come here, I am getting scared of him (the Rapido auto driver)." Meanwhile, the auto driver in the video is heard speaking in Kannada and pointing a finger at the woman. She then turns to English and tries to explain that while she understands Kannada, she cannot speak the language. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Anya S (@anyadamnson) The woman had immediately contacted Rapido's helpline to report the issue and later filed an official complaint with the police. The video of the confrontation between the woman and the auto driver has gone viral on social media. The comments under the video that was shared by multiple users show the different opinions. While some have supported the woman, others have also marched behind the auto driver and defended his demand to speak Kannada.

Tourist guide shares new detail in Meghalaya honeymoon murder case: ‘Four men were walking ahead while…'
A tourist guide in Meghalaya has told the police that the missing honeymoon couple from Indore, Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam, were accompanied by three men on May 23, the day they disappeared from the Sohra area. Raja's body was found days later in a deep gorge, while the search for Sonam is still ongoing. According to a police official, the guide's statement has been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation. Local guide Albert Pde said he saw the couple with three other men on the morning of May 23 as they climbed more than 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat. 'The four men were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men were conversing in Hindi, but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English,' Pde told PTI. Pde added that he had met the couple a day earlier, on 22 May, and offered to take them down to Nongriat, but they had hired another guide named Bha Wansai instead. When Pde reached Mawlakhiat that day, the couple's rented scooter was no longer in the parking area. The scooter was later found abandoned at Sohrarim, several kilometres away, with the keys still attached. Sonam's brother, Govind, who is in Shillong to help with the search, has criticised the state government's efforts. 'We strongly believe Sonam is alive. They are searching for her like she is dead,' he told PTI, urging authorities to involve the CBI or other agencies. Also read | Audio, CCTV clips, raincoat: What is known about Indore couple's Meghalaya honeymoon mystery Meanwhile, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said the government is doing everything possible. "No stone is being left unturned," he said. Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem of East Khasi Hills district told PTI that rescue teams continue the search despite tough conditions. 'We are trying our best... ur boys are doing what they can without rest, using gadgets and trained dogs. The search will continue,' he said. A special investigation team led by an SP and assisted by four DSPs is probing the case. Search teams, including the NDRF, SDRF, sniffer dogs, drones, and trained climbers, are involved in the ongoing search for Sonam. Raja's decomposed body was discovered on June 2 near the Weisawdong waterfalls. Police said his gold ring and chain were missing, raising suspicions of foul play. The next day, a bloodstained machete was found near the area, followed by a raincoat similar to Sonam's, discovered in Mawkma village, located between Sohrarim and the gorge. The Mawlakhiat parking lot lacks CCTV cameras and does not keep a record of parked vehicles. A village elder told PTI that the area's infrastructure is poor, and electricity is unreliable. Locals have now decided to start keeping track of vehicle numbers and visitors' phone details. (With PTI inputs)
