Mustafizur Rahman out of Pakistan vs Bangladesh T20I series with injury
Listen to article
Bangladesh's T20I series against Pakistan has been dealt a major blow with the news that fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman will miss the upcoming matches after sustaining a thumb injury during his last appearance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
The injury occurred on May 24, while Mustafizur was playing for Delhi Capitals against Punjab Kings.
The left-arm pacer was struck on his left thumb while attempting a return catch off Josh Inglis, which forced him to leave the field. Subsequent medical scans revealed a clip fracture, ruling him out for at least three weeks.
Bangladesh team physiotherapist Delowar Hossain confirmed the setback, stating, "Mustafizur sustained a clip fracture on his left thumb during his last IPL match.
He needs time for rest and recovery. A follow-up assessment will be carried out after two weeks to evaluate his progress."
With Mustafizur sidelined, Bangladesh have added fast bowler Khaled Ahmed to the squad.
Ahmed, who has been in strong form in domestic competitions, took 77 wickets at an average of 21.74 in the 2024–25 season.
His performances in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), where he claimed 20 wickets at 21.55, have earned him a spot in the national side.
This injury marks the third withdrawal from Bangladesh's original squad for the Pakistan series.
Earlier, Nahid Rana withdrew for personal reasons, and Soumya Sarkar was ruled out due to a back injury, with all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz stepping in to replace him.
The T20I series against Pakistan is scheduled to begin on May 28 at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, followed by matches on May 30 and June 1.
Bangladesh will be hoping to recover from a recent 2-1 loss to the UAE in Sharjah.

Australia's Starc comfortable with IPL pullout regardless of repercussion
MELBOURNE: Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc is comfortable with his decision to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) following the India-Pakistan clashes last month regardless of any repercussions, the 35-year-old said. The IPL was suspended on May 9 in the wake of hostilities between the two. It resumed on May 17 after the nuclear-armed neighbours agreed to a ceasefire. While most IPL foreign recruits returned to complete their franchise commitment, the Delhi Capitals duo of Starc and fellow Australian Jake Fraser-McGurk took no further part in the 10-team league. 'I'm comfortable with my decision and how I felt about the whole situation and how it was handled,' Starc told the Sydney Morning Herald on Friday. 'Time will tell with repercussions or how it looks with guys that didn't return. But I've had my questions and concerns leading into that game, and obviously we saw what happened, which played a part in my decision.' Starc was in Dharamsala, near the Pakistan border, for Delhi's May 9 match against the Punjab Kings. The contest was abandoned midway through, although league organisers blamed it on a floodlights failure. 'Jake and I chose not to (return). So it was a very individual decision, and I'm happy to live with whatever comes of that,' Starc said. He opted out of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan earlier this year citing personal reasons and has skipped the IPL more than once to preserve himself for international cricket. Marsh back to skipper Australia in Windies T20s, Cummins and Starc rested The left-arm quick said he withdrew from the remainder of the IPL because of the extraordinary circumstances. 'I'm still heavily committed to the Delhi group, and I'm not someone that's gone into tournaments and pulled out after being picked up in an auction or whatever that looks like,' Starc said. 'These are different circumstances … I had a discussion back home then came to a decision, and whatever comes from that I'm comfortable with that and we move forward.'

Indian police arrest four people for cricket fans stampede
Police in India's tech capital of Bengaluru have arrested four people, including an official of a top cricket franchise, in connection with a stampede during a trophy celebration that killed 11 people and injured 47, media reported. Four people, three from an event management company and one official from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricket team, whose victory in the Indian Premier League this week led to fan frenzy, were arrested early on Friday morning, media said. Spokespersons for the team did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. On Wednesday, Bengaluru were celebrating their win the previous day over Punjab Kings in the final of the IPL's 18th edition, the world's richest T20 cricket league. The team had given away free passes for the celebration at a stadium in the city but said that numbers would be limited. Thousands of people gathered outside the stadium, and fans without passes tried push through the gates, leading to a stampede. At least 11 die in crowd chaos outside Indian cricket stadium The franchise said later the incident was 'unfortunate' and pledged one million Indian rupees to each family of the 11 fans who died on Wednesday. Stampedes occur frequently in India, mainly at religious events, but it was the first time in 45 years that fans had died in a crush at a sporting event, media said. India's head cricket coach Gautam Gambhir said on Thursday he did not support such roadshows and celebrations. 'Celebration is important. But more important than that is the life of any person. So, if we are not prepared or if we can't handle the crowd in that way, then we might as well not have these roadshows,' Gambhir told reporters.

India Test captain Gill ready to lead in his own way
India's new Test captain Shubman Gill knows he has big shoes to fill after the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he wants to develop his own style of leadership, he said on Thursday. Rohit and Kohli, former skippers and batting mainstays of the team, both quit Test cricket weeks before the start of India's five-Test series in England. Gill, 25, impressed as captain of Indian Premier League (IPL) side Gujarat Titans, leading them to the playoffs. 'The pressure comes with every tour. The two big players have served us for so long, it is not easy to fill that space,' Gill told a news conference in Mumbai. 'My style of captaincy will be my own, it will develop with experience. I like to communicate with the players. I would try to get them comfortable with their strengths and weaknesses. The players should feel secure, only then will they perform well.' Gill was picked as captain ahead of fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, who led India in two recent Tests in Australia. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar cited workload management concerns over the 31-year-old Bumrah who will not play all five Tests in England. India name Shubman Gill as new Test captain before England series 'We haven't taken the call over which three games (Bumrah is) going to play,' India head coach Gautam Gambhir said. 'We are going to have a discussion with him and a lot will depend on the results of the series as well, where the series is heading.' At least 11 people died and 47 were injured on Wednesday in a crowd surge outside IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru's home stadium during celebrations of their maiden title. 'My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives,' Gambhir said. 'We are all equally responsible for this. Every life matters. If we are not ready to hold a road show, we should not do that.'
