When 'Thug Life' star Kamal Haasan compared ‘Indian 3' to Payasam—and said he liked it more than ‘Indian 2'

Time of Indiaa day ago

It was one of those rare, candid moments that only a legend like
Kamal Haasan
could deliver with such warmth and wisdom. During a media interaction ahead of the release of 'Indian 2', Kamal Haasan, alongside director
S. Shankar
and actor Siddharth, reflected on the film's long journey.
But what lingered in everyone's minds wasn't just the epic scale of the project—it was Kamal's now-iconic comparison between 'Indian 2' and 'Indian 3' that had fans and social media buzzing.
With his signature wit, Haasan casually remarked, 'I like 'Indian 3' more than 'Indian 2'.' The internet, quick to pick up on every nuance, speculated whether this was a veiled critique. But the Ulaganayagan, never one to leave meaning to misinterpretation, explained it the Haasan way—with a delicious analogy: 'People misunderstood.
I didn't say I didn't like 'Indian 2'. I just said I liked 'Indian 3' more. It's like when you eat a meal—you enjoy the sambar and rasam, but you look forward to the payasam.
'
That simple yet poignant metaphor captured everything—expectation, evolution, and emotional payoff. It also revealed how deeply connected Kamal is to the storytelling journey, not just as an actor but as a creator who savors each narrative layer.
Haasan went on to open up about the hardships behind 'Indian 2', calling it 'the most difficult film I've acted in.' A six-year odyssey, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, an on-set tragedy, and personal losses, tested every fiber of the team's resilience. The aged 'Indian Thatha' avatar, recreated through complex prosthetics, was physically demanding. 'It was itchy,' Kamal confessed, 'but then, I had to learn to live in that skin.
'
He also shared moments of admiration for
Shankar
's perfectionism, noting how the director fussed over even the smallest props—'right down to the pen'—carried by the vigilante character. 'As an actor, the biggest high is still hearing the director say, 'That was good.' That never gets old,' Haasan said.
Interestingly, as this throwback continues to circulate, fans have even more reason to celebrate Kamal Haasan's creative legacy—'Thug Life', another ambitious collaboration with director
Mani Ratnam
, released in cinemas today, June 5.
The film has already stirred excitement for its bold themes, striking visuals, and powerhouse performances, marking yet another milestone in Kamal's ever-evolving cinematic journey.
This look back not only reminds us of Haasan's unshakable commitment to his craft but also of his enduring ability to blend intellect, emotion, and charm—proving, time and again, why he remains an unmatched titan of Indian cinema. Much like payasam after a grand meal—some things are worth waiting for.

Samar Khan says Kay Kay Menon's viral clip from 'Shaurya' was taken out of context: ‘It's like calling Gabbar Singh from Sholay a hero'

Filmmaker Samar Khan is all set to return to the spotlight with 'Chhal Kapat – The Deception', a murder mystery premiering on OTT on June 6. His 2008 release 'Shaurya' continues to remain in the spotlight after a courtroom scene featuring Kay Kay Menon went viral online. However, the video was taken out of context—something Samar has never liked to address. Nonetheless, he has now opened up about the intention behind the scene and how it went viral with a completely different interpretation. Kay Kay Menon's scene from Shaurya 00:59 Any Director Can Make Mistakes, I Choose Roles Based On Scripts: Kay Kay Menon On Picking Shekhar Home Shaurya is a courtroom drama starring Rahul Bose, Kay Kay Menon, Minissha Lamba, Deepak Dobriyal, and Jaaved Jaaferi. The film made waves for its powerful themes and explosive climax. At the centre of the storm was a searing monologue delivered by Kay Kay Menon's character, Brigadier Rudra Pratap Singh. In an interview with Hindustan Times, Khan expressed his discomfort over how the essence of the film has been misrepresented online. He admitted that he had outgrown Shaurya many years ago but still feels proud of the film. 'But what people make of it is out of my control. People ask me about it on Twitter and other platforms, but I never respond. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Device Made My Power Bill Drop Overnight elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Pre-Order Undo Anything I say would be taken out of context,' he shared. Samar about clickbait culture The clip featuring Rudra's monologue is often portrayed as a moment of righteous heroism. But for Khan, this popular interpretation completely misses the point. 'Unfortunately, many of those who share that scene haven't watched the scenes before or after. It's like isolating Gabbar Singh from Sholay and calling him a hero. Villains often come off as more attractive. Even with someone like Shah Rukh Khan , who has done countless romantic roles, people still remember him for Darr or Baazigar. As creators, we have to detach ourselves from how our work is received or reinterpreted,' he explained. He didn't hold back while discussing the role social media plays in reshaping narratives. He called it a clickbait culture driven by short attention spans. About Samar's recent production venture Chhal Kapat 'Chhal Kapat – The Deception' is directed by Ajay Bhuyan and features Shriya Pilgaonkar, Kamya Ahlawat, Ragini Dwivedi, Tuhina Das, Yahhve Sharma, Pranay Pachauri, Smaran Sahu, and Anuj Sachdeva in key roles. Despite the success of the 'Oye Oye' song, Naseeruddin Shah turned down dance offers, confessing, 'I'm a terrible dancer'

The 1989 movie 'Tridev' was loved for multiple reasons. There are several elements that made it garner appreciation and fame, one of which was the popular song 'Oye Oye.' Back then, this track became a national hit in no time, and along with it, Naseeruddin found himself in the middle of mainstream adulation. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Did you know that after 'Oye Oye,' Naseeruddin was offered a lot of dance numbers, but the actor was adamant and he refused them all. I In an old interview with Lehren Retro, Nasseruddin Shah candidly spoke about why he declined the offers, and his reasons were both endearing and bluntly honest at the same time. 'After the song Oye Oye, I was flooded with only offers like that. People wanted me to do the same thing. But I didn't fall into that trap because I know I'm a terrible dancer. Oye Oye worked because they didn't expect that I would be even able to do one step right. And that's why they were shocked and it worked,' said the star. 'Now it has stopped happening, but there was a time when it used to happen a lot. I was asked to sing, and that was equivalent to a hundred deaths. I'm really bad at singing, among the worst singers of songs in Hindi. Perhaps because I never thought that I would have to play hero in films, or sing songs, or worse, romance actresses younger than my daughter's age,' he continued. The actor further confessed that he never saw himself as a main character in the commercial cinema. He wanted to bring characters to life, more substance to the screen. 'I had thought I would end up becoming a character actor. Will play the role of a lawyer, doctor, cop, or an elder brother. And that's why I'm terrible at commercial acting, because I never trained for it.' Over the years, established himself as one of the finest and versatile stars of Bollywood.
