Telangana's unified Dial-112 helpline handled 45 critical cases in first six months

The Hindu01-06-2025
In the first six months of operation, Telangana's unified Dial-112 helpline handled 45 critical cases. These included 31 suicide attempts, five missing children, three instances of child marriage, two cases of child abduction, and individual incidents of attempted murder, rape, forcible marriage, and a road accident, according to data released by the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre (TGiCCC).
Introduced on December 5, 2024, the Telangana Emergency Response Support System (TGERSS), operating through the Dial-112 platform, has replaced a host of legacy emergency numbers including 100 (police), 101 (fire), 108 (medical), women safety (181), child safety (1098) and disaster management (1077). The system, established at the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) in Banjara Hills, uses computer-based dispatch technology for quick and coordinated response across departments.
The system ensured real-time communication with field personnel, ensuring quick intervention and continuous monitoring by emergency control roof staff.
The emergency support framework is designed to be accessible through multiple channels, including voice calls, SMS, email, SOS panic button, and ERSS web portal.

‘Maha Kumbh showed state's capacity to manage mega events'

Lucknow: Former Uttar Pradesh director general of police Prashant Kumar said that the successful conduct of Maha Kumbh-2025 was "a testament to faith, force, and foresight" — proving that the state can manage events of "civilizational proportions" through strong leadership, meticulous planning, and advanced technology. Speaking at TOI Dialogues, Kumar said: "At Maha Kumbh, infrastructure met intent, technology met tradition, and governance met faith. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath 's personal oversight, resource support, and emphasis on law and order helped in the smooth execution of the 55-day congregation." Over 25,000 police personnel were deployed under a unified command system. "Every ghat was risk-assessed, every route studied, and every possible scenario — from stampedes to cyber threats — simulated and planned for," he said. Technology formed the "new trishul" of policing, with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) deploying AI-based facial recognition, drone surveillance, heat maps, real-time dashboards, GPS-enabled patrols, and body-worn cameras. Social media served as a real-time communication and grievance redressal platform, while cyber teams countered disinformation and digital fraud. Kumar highlighted the role of women police, anti-Romeo squads, traffic units, and intelligence officers, alongside humanitarian measures like 'Khoya-Paya' booths for lost children, medical aid stations, and disaster preparedness drills. Calling the event a "civilizational achievement," Kumar said it showcased New Uttar Pradesh's ability to merge security with compassion. Pune city jurisdiction to get five new police stations

Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Friday that five new police stations would be added to the existing 39 under the Pune police jurisdiction. The CM was speaking during a function at the Shivajinagar police headquarters to launch various projects. "Pune police had submitted proposals for new police stations and I announce that the govt has sanctioned the same," said Fadnavis, who also holds the home department portfolio. The new police stations will be in Narhe (carved out of Sinhagad Road and rural Pune's Haveli police station areas), Yeolewadi (carved out of Kondhwa), Manjari (Hadapsar), Laxminagar (Yerawada) and Lohegaon (Vimantal). Similarly, Laxminagar is another area that needs critical attention." The CM also launched Pune police's new AI-driven integrated command and control centre (ICCC) and the integrated traffic management system (ITMS), besides commissioning five modern surveillance vans and surveillance drones. He virtually inaugurated the new building of the Chandannagar police station and performed the groundbreaking ceremony of upcoming buildings of Loni Kalbhor, Nanded City, Kharadi and Kondhwa police stations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Most Beautiful Female Athletes Right Now Undo He inaugurated the CCTV camera and lighting systems in Bopdev Ghat area. Fadnavis singled out Pune's traffic as the biggest concern. He said, "The ITMS aims to increase the traffic speed and will operate at 503 major chowks. It will be a comprehensive technological intervention where traffic simulation will be conducted through satellite to synchronise signals and divert vehicles from congested roads to alternative routes. The police will get information through the system's legacy data about the timings when traffic at a particular chowk increases and get a solution/advice for the same," he said. The CM raised concern about the drug menace in Maharashtra and acknowledged Pune police's actions and seizure of huge quantities of drugs in the recent past. "The fight against drugs is continuing," he added. Police have identified 21 secluded spots, including Bopdev Ghat, where people go for outings, he said, adding, "CCTV cameras and lighting arrangements will be installed at these spots for people's safety." Meanwhile, deputy CM Ajit Pawar raised concern about rising incidents of vehicle vandalism involving minors in Pune and stressed the need to change the law to tackle the problem. He also directed additional chief secretary (home) Iqbal Singh Chahal to clear the process of shifting Bund Garden police station and two police establishments near Rajiv Gandhi bridge in Aundh without delay. The latter will be demolished for road widening. Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar said, "We have launched a special drive to map CCTV cameras at private establishments and integrate them with the ICCC." 50% of Smart City cameras non-functional: Police report

Thiruvananthapuram: Around 50% of surveillance cameras installed under Smart City project across the state capital are reportedly not functioning, says a report by city police. According to the report, nearly all cameras are currently offline, severely limiting the city's real-time monitoring capabilities. Sources close to the police indicate that only a handful of the integrated cameras, meant to oversee traffic flow, public spaces and environmental violations are operational. Civic activists and citizens have expressed concerns about the lack of monitoring, particularly regarding traffic rule violations, illegal dumping of garbage and unauthorised parking. The police commissioner has also written to Smart City CEO detailing the issue. A senior police officer has confirmed the issue. "At present, more than 50% of the cameras under Smart City infrastructure are out of service. This hampers our ability to respond quickly to violations and emergencies across the city. These AI-powered systems were designed to detect offences such as red-light jumping, illegal parking and roadside waste dumping, many of which go unchecked due to the non-functional cameras," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Meanwhile, a senior Smart City official told TOI that the police report was incorrect and the majority of the cameras were functional. "The city police certified in 2024 that all the cameras were functional. Now, the police team has changed and the new team is levelling allegations. We will counter it with the details we have," the official said. The official added that the city police commissioner sent a letter to Smart City CEO in Sept 2024 stating that after a technical inspection, all cameras were found working. "Now, when they checked four cameras, two were found defunct and they concluded that 50% of the cameras in the city are damaged. It is completely wrong," the official said. The company responsible for the maintenance, which has a five-year annual maintenance contract, said that they were rectifying the issues based on the defects reported by the police. "It is not true that most of the cameras were damaged. In total there are over 1,000 cameras in the city and 98% of them are functional. If any defects are reported, we will rectify them as soon as possible," a company official said. Under the city's smart surveillance initiative, high-definition cameras feed back to the integrated command and control centre (ICCC) and traffic and safety command centre (TSCCC), where real-time AI analysis triggers alerts and sends automatic penalty notices. However, with many cameras offline, the automation is largely suspended. "Now we are physically monitoring major junctions and hotspots. But on-ground enforcement cannot substitute for automated coverage, especially when human resources are limited," a senior officer said.
