Red Sox trade three-time All-Star Rafael Devers to Giants in blockbuster deal
BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday in a deal that could shake up pennant races on both coasts.
Devers' agent, Nelson Montes de Oca, confirmed the deal to The Associated Press. ESPN reported that the Giants are sending Boston a package of players that includes pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison for the 28-year-old designated hitter, who had bristled at his demotion from third base this year.
The Giants were one game behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers heading into Sunday night's matchup between the NL West rivals. San Francisco shortstop Willy Adames said on the ESPN broadcast that the team found out about the trade 15-20 minutes before the game.
'Everybody's so excited,' he said in an on-field interview while playing the field in the second inning. 'Me, personally, I'm like thrilled to have him on the team. He's one of the best hitters in the game, and to have him on the team, I think is going to help us do a lot of damage in the division. Obviously we need a bat like him in this lineup.'
A three-time All-Star who signed a 10-year, $313.5 million contract with the Red Sox in 2023, Devers is batting .272 with 15 homers and 58 RBIs in 73 games, including a solo shot in Boston's 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday that completed a three-game sweep.
But his relationship with the team began to deteriorate when the team signed Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman during spring training and asked Devers to move to DH; he balked before agreeing to the switch. When first baseman Triston Casas sustained a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox approached Devers about playing the field and he declined, saying the front office ' should do their jobs ' and look for another player.
A day after Devers' comments to the media about playing first, Red Sox owner John Henry, team president Sam Kennedy and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow flew to Kansas City to meet with Devers and manager Alex Cora.
The situation became more difficult when Bregman sustained what the team called a significant right quadriceps injury on May 23.
'Everybody around the league, I think, was paying attention to that. When any team is having some kind of drama like that, with a player like Devers — he basically was the face of the franchise,' Adames said before he was interrupted by Tommy Edman's home run that gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead.
'We're thrilled to have him. Everybody's excited. So we're going to make him feel at home,' Adames said. 'I feel like it sends a message that we're going to compete. That we're going to do whatever it takes to come over here and win the division.'
The Red Sox have won five out of six against the rival Yankees over the last two weekends to improve to 37-36, but they are still fourth in the AL East, 6 1/2 games behind division-leading New York.
Devers was 20 when he made his major league debut with the Red Sox in 2017. He helped the Red Sox win the 2018 World Series and led the team in RBIs for five consecutive seasons from 2020-24. He has finished in the top 20 in voting for AL MVP five times.
Devers is not the first Red Sox All-Star to be traded away: The team sent Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2020 season in a salary dump — just a year after he won the AL MVP award and led Boston to a franchise-record 108 wins and its fourth World Series title since 2004.
But the Devers deal is perhaps most reminiscent of the 2004 midseason shakeup when Boston traded disgruntled shortstop — and fan favorite — Nomar Garciaparra to Minnesota.
The Red Sox went on to win the World Series that year, ending their 86-year championship drought.
This is the latest big move by Buster Posey, a seven-time All-Star who took over as San Francisco's president of baseball operations in September. He signed Justin Verlander to a $15 million, one-year contract in January and Adames to a $182 million, seven-year deal in December.
'It makes them better right now, for sure,' Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw said in a TV interview from the dugout at Dodger Stadium. 'Buster Posey's really doing it. Good for Buster over there. He's going for it. I'd consider Raffy one of the top 10 hitters in the game, at worst. He's definitely a game-changer. It will be interesting to see what position he plays over there.'

Amir Khan meets Anthony Joshua after accusing him of sleeping with his wife
The pair were seemingly good friends until Khan accused Joshua of sleeping with his wife - but the fighters may have rekindled their friendship after linking up together in Ghana Amir Khan and Anthony Joshua appear to be on good terms again after the former accused the British heavyweight of sleeping with his wife. Joshua has been enjoying some time outside of the ring post-elbow surgery and the 35-year-old has recently enjoyed luxury trips to Oman, Dubai and Saudi Arabia. The Brit was recently given a hero's welcome and was mobbed by fans after touching down in Ghana. The former two-time heavyweight world champion flew out to watch Khan's first ever boxing show as a promoter in the aforementioned African nation. Khan hopes the show will serve as a launchpad for future promotions worldwide. In the main event, Andrew Tabiti defeated Jacob Dickson. However, the most stunning moment from the event saw Joshua and Khan appearing rather cordial with each other after being pictured together. This comes nearly a decade on after Khan took to social media to claim Faryal Makhdoom had cheated on him with the heavyweight star. Joshua denied the claims - posting at the time: 'Bantz aside, I hope you guys can resolve your situation, or this is a hack as we have never even met! Plus, I like my women BBW (sic)." Khan was quick to reveal to his fans that the messages did NOT come from a hacker. 'Everything you saw on social media today is real,' he said. 'Nothing's been hacked. But yeah, what's done is done. Everything I posted on social media today was true,' he added. Khan and Makhdoom had an 80-minute Twitter exchange before agreeing to separate. However, they eventually rekindled their marriage. Speaking about the incident back in 2019 - ahead of his fight against Terence Crawford - he told ESPN: "It was a made-up message. A lot of people were making all these fake messages saying that 'Joshua messaged your wife and she messaged him back.' "Then I posted it on social media and said, 'This has happened and it's true. And I'm calling it over. She's no longer my wife.' I did feel bad, I did feel stupid at the time but the damage was done. I made that mistake in tweeting something and putting it out. I was just digging a deeper and deeper hole. I remember I went to see Faryal. I apologised. I said, 'Look, I don't know what went through my head.' And I totally changed my ways, changed the way I am." Three years later, Khan apologised to Joshua. 'I had the problem with Anthony Joshua, which I feel awful for, because at the end of the day. But I put him in the firing line for no reason,' he told Gary Neville on The Overlap. 'I mean, he was a friend of mine. Since then, we've never spoken. So I lost a good friend through that as well.' Now, it seems as if the pair are on relatively speaking terms again. Joshua has not fought since losing to Daniel Dubois last year. With the Brit hoping to return to action later this year, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has listed Dillian Whyte and Jared Anderson as potential opponents for a comeback fight. "For me, if I'm advising AJ, we're back this year, we have two Tyson Fury fights, what else is there to do?," he said. "Maybe fight a Daniel Dubois, but for me once AJ fights Tyson Fury, he's kind of done it all. I'd love him to have another crack at Daniel Dubois and I'd love him to have another crack at Usyk but you just keep going on and on and on. In an ideal world, we'd like to fight in November/December and then have two Tyson Fury fights in 2026. It was gonna be Dillian Whyte, probably, but looks like he's fighting Moses [Itauma]. Jared Anderson, Deontay Wilder, I don't know."

Bizarre reason Bill Simmons thinks the Premier League had a role in Boston Red Sox's wild Rafael Devers trade
The multi-team ownership model has it's positives and negatives. But rarely does a decision made for one sports team have a ripple effect on another team playing an entirely different sport an ocean away. Yet, this morning as the sun rises over Boston, many fans may be right to shake their fists in the general direction of Liverpool after a seismic baseball trade. On Sunday evening, just hours after hitting a home run to complete a sweep of the rival New York Yankees, star slugger Rafael Devers was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for starter Jordan Hicks and a package of prospects. It's similar in scope, if not equivalent in star power, to the Luka Doncic trade in that it came out of nowhere and stunned the league. While Red Sox fans were left do deal with the anguish and anger, sports media icon Bill Simmons began pointing fingers at Red Sox ownership's ties to Liverpool FC. The Red Sox were the first pro sports franchise purchased by billionaire John Henry, who went on to form Fenway Sports Group (FSG). Since that purchase, FSG went on to purchase NASCAR team Rousch Racing (now RFK Racing), the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins, and of course, Liverpool FC. Liverpool has lined up two major transfers for a reported combined fee of roughly $196million (£145.6m) from 2024 German champions Bayer Leverkusen. First, the club is set to sign Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz on a deal worth $135.8m (£100m) plus $21.7m (£16m) in potential add-ons which would make him the record-breaking British transfer. While that deal is yet to be confirmed, Liverpool have already announced the signing of Wirtz's teammate Jeremie Frimpong on a transfer fee of $40.2m (£29.6m). Liverpool's addition of the dynamic fullback and the talismanic midfielder are luxury signings on a team that just won a record-tying 20th Premier League title last season and are hoping to repeat. Meanwhile, back stateside, the Red Sox have not made the playoffs in four seasons and haven't won a World Series title in seven. This season, the Sox are just one game above .500 - putting them fourth in the AL East, but only half a game back of a Wild Card spot. But those chances can now be kissed goodbye as Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow engineered a trade to move one of the top-10 hitters in baseball in exchange for Hicks, minor-league pitchers Kyle Harrison and Jose Bello, and outfield prospect James Tibbs. Many Boston fans are drawing parallels to a similarly major blockbuster trade in February of 2020 - when Breslow's predecessor Chaim Bloom dealt MVP and World Series winner Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price to the Los Angeles Dodgers for outfielder Alex Verdugo, catcher Connor Wong, and infielder Jeter Downs. Devers had issues with the Red Sox front office after they changed his position in the lineup Verdugo played three seasons of solid baseball with the Red Sox before being traded to the Yankees, Wong is batting below the Mendoza line this season, and Downs never panned out and is currently playing in Japan. Betts went on to win two World Series titles with the Dodgers and made four All-MLB First Teams. Now, the Red Sox have moved on from a 2.3 WAR player who logged 15 home runs and has an OPS of .905 across 73 games. Devers' relationship with the front office had been deteriorating all season long. The third baseman was initially moved to being a designated hitter after Boston acquired Alex Bregman in free agency. In May, the Red Sox tried moving Devers to first base - a position he'd never played before - leading the player to go off on the decision with the media. Bregman is a better defensive player than Devers, but the loss of their best bat will sting the Red Sox and their fans for some time. However, this does clear his 10-year, $315.5m contract off the books. Moving Devers out of the DH spot will clear up some room for the log jam the team has in the outfield - which includes All-Star Jarren Duran and top prospect Roman Anthony. The Red Sox travel to San Francisco to take on the Giants this weekend in their only series of the season.

NY Giants star 'The Scottish Hammer' would love NFL game at Murrayfield
He is one of Scotland's highest-paid sportsmen after putting pen to paper on a three-year contract extension worth $9m. But Jamie Gillan, punter with the New York Giants, has never had the chance to play in his homeland. Now, with the NFL taking more and more regular season games to Europe and beyond, the 28-year-old would love nothing more than to don the famous Giants blue uniform back in Scotland. And having had a taste of international games in London in 2022 and Munich last year, he would love to see a game staged in Edinburgh, back where he was schooled and played rugby before moving his life across the Atlantic. Gillan told STV Sport: 'The first time I went over was a lot of fun. Getting to play in Tottenham's stadium was amazing. 'I actually got to go out a couple of days prior and go to a rugby club that I used to play for when I was really young. 'That whole experience – playing there, the crowd not just being Giants fans or Green Bay fans but a mixture of all kinds of fans – that was a great atmosphere and great fun. 'It would be cool to get back there. I'd love to play in Dublin or if we could somehow play in Murrayfield – that would be cool. 'Murrayfield is in the capital, in Edinburgh, so that would be a lot of fun. I would love to do that.' Gillan – nicknamed 'The Scottish Hammer' in American Football – is entering his seventh season in the NFL, having previously spent time with the Cleveland Browns and the Buffalo Bills before arriving in New York in 2022. He is now a veteran presence in the Giants locker room, and while kickers spend more time away from the core players on offense and defense to hone their specialism, Gillan senses a change in the atmosphere around the squad. The Giants have had back-to-back disappointing years, winning just three games last season and six in 2023. Key additions in this year's NFL Draft – including highly rated linebacker Abdul Carter and first round quarterback Jaxson Dart – are contributing to a return of the feelgood factor in Gillan's team. The Inverness-born player said: 'The Xs and Os are obviously extremely important but another big portion of winning, I believe, is team chemistry and 'the vibe' in the locker room. 'So far the vibe has been great. The guys are funny, we are making relationships. 'This is a good time of year to create those relationships because we have time to go play golf after [practice] or we can go get dinner together and really get to know one another. 'I do believe that is really important for winning games on Sunday because you care about one another then. It is not just about business, you have pals you are playing with. 'So far that has been really good. The rookies have been great, they've been a lot of fun and vocal. Our free agent signings have been awesome too. 'Everything is looking really good and trending in the right direction so we have just got to keep on top of that and keep doing it.' But the arrival of Dart may indirectly lead to a change for Gillan – they are currently both wearing the number six jersey, and only one of them can carry it into the season. Asked if any conversations had been had as to who will get to keep the number, Gillan laughed: 'Yeah there have been a couple, we will see how it pans out. We will see in the next week or two what happens!'
