KOTA BARU: The Kelantan Customs Department seized over 14kg of ganja flowers, estimated to be worth RM1.43mil, at Gate 1 of the Duty Free Zone in Rantau Panjang on May 27.
State Customs director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said the seizure was made after the Rantau Panjang East Zone Narcotics Unit inspected a bag left in the said area and found 10 transparent plastic packets of ganja flowers.
He said his department also conducted a check on a Thai man at the same location and found in his bag 15 transparent plastic packets of suspected ganja buds, the potent flowering tops of the cannabis plant.
"The total seizure involved two bags containing 25 transparent plastic packets with an estimated weight of over 14kg of suspected ganja buds, worth RM1.43mil.
"The cannabis flowers were suspected of being smuggled through an illegal base in Sungai Golok. The man was brought back to the Enforcement Division office in Rantau Panjang for further investigation," he said in a statement Monday (June 16).
Wan Jamal Abdul Salam said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and if convicted, the offender could be sentenced to death or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, the offender could be sentenced to whipping of not less than 12 strokes. - Bernama

Royal Thai Army says Cambodia must halt provocations instead of claiming victimhood

BANGKOK: Royal Thai Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree (pic) said Cambodia should stop portraying itself as a victim in the ongoing border conflict and instead cease all provocations that violate the ceasefire agreement. Winthai was responding to a Thursday (Aug 21) press conference by Cambodian Defence Ministry spokeswoman Maly Socheata, who alleged that Thailand continued to breach the ceasefire agreed during the General Border Committee meeting in Malaysia. Maly said Cambodia had strictly adhered to the truce by refraining from disseminating fake or distorted information, and she urged Thailand to do the same to create an atmosphere conducive to peace negotiations and the restoration of bilateral ties. She also called on Thailand to release 18 Cambodian soldiers detained on Thai soil. Thailand accuses Cambodia of breaching ceasefire terms Winthai countered that Cambodia, not Thailand, had repeatedly violated the ceasefire through actions including the deployment of PMN-2 landmines against Thai troops and the use of drones to spy on Thai territory. He cited an incident on Aug 19 when a Cambodian soldier disrupted an inspection by the Asean Interim Observer Team at Chong An Ma in Ubon Ratchathani, calling it further proof of Cambodian provocations. Call for Cambodia to end provocations Winthai stressed that if Cambodia truly wanted peace, it must: - Halt the use of PMN-2 landmines for clandestine attacks against Thai soldiers - Stop spreading disinformation through both state and private channels - Cease provoking Thai troops and inciting Cambodian citizens to protest - End the mobilisation of troops along the border - Stop violating Thai airspace with drones Treatment of detained Cambodian soldiers Winthai also rejected Cambodia's attempt to frame itself as a victim over the 18 detained soldiers, saying Thailand has treated them in line with the Geneva Conventions and international humanitarian law. He added that Thailand had even allowed representatives from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to monitor the conditions of the detained troops to ensure transparency and humane treatment. - The Nation/ANN

Kelantan Customs seizes RM2.25 million in contraband cigarettes in Tumpat

KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Customs Department seized 2.8 million sticks of white cigarettes worth RM2.25 million, including unpaid tax, in a raid in Tumpat on Aug 5. Its director, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long, said the Kota Bharu Enforcement Branch operations team raided an unoccupied house in Kampung Bendang Kerian at 11.30 am following public information and two weeks of surveillance. He said that when the raid was carried out, the house was locked and the operations team had to break down the door before recovering 288 boxes of cigarettes believed to be contraband. 'The value of the seized cigarettes is estimated at RM316,800 while the amount of tax owing is RM1.93 million, bringing the total value of the seizure to RM2.25 million. 'Initial investigations found that the syndicate used the rented house as a storage facility for smuggled cigarettes. The case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967,' he told a press conference here today. Wan Jamal said the new brand of cigarettes were believed to be smuggled from Thailand through illegal bases before being distributed to customers for markets outside Kelantan. – Bernama
