Kolkata: The Kolkata police on Saturday set up a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old student inside a law college at Kasba in south Kolkata on Wednesday late evening. A senior police official said officials have found an incriminating video clip in one of the three mobile phones seized from the accused persons.
'We have found a video clipping of approximately 1 minute 30 seconds, which corroborates the statements made by the victim in her complaint,' said an official.
A first-year student of South Calcutta Law College was allegedly gangraped on Wednesday in the security guard's room in the ground-floor of the college campus.
Report of the victim's medical examination done in a state-run hospital has also corroborated her statements, officials said without divulging further details.
On Thursday a contractual staff of the college Monojit Mishra (31) and two existing students, Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20) were arrested on Thursday on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim. On Saturday a security guard of the college Pinaki Banerjee was also arrested.
The woman in her complaint had alleged that Mishra showed her two videos which were captured while she was being stripped.
'I still fought back and then he (Mishra) showed me two videos of mine being naked when he raped me. He threatened me to show everyone these videos if I don't cooperate and I don't come whenever he calls me,' the victim had stated in her complaint.
Meanwhile police have also collected footages of CCTv which covers the area outside the union room and the security guard's room. The footages are more than seven hour long starting from 3:30 pm on June 25.
The victim had alleged that while she reached the college around 12:00 noon on Wednesday to fill up some forms for an upcoming examination, she was asked to stay back by Mishra. The crime took place between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm.
'We have arrested a security guard of the college. This is the fourth arrest in connection with the case. The probe is ongoing,' a senior officer said.
The victim had alleged that Mishra's aides, Ahmed and Mukherjee, allegedly locked the main gate of the college and forcibly took her to the guard's room. The security guard was allegedly asked to leave. In the guard's room, Mishra allegedly attempted to rape her.
'Mishra instructed Ahmed and Mukherjee to take me to the guard's room and make the guard sit outside. They did so,' she wrote in the complaint.
'The security guard did little to help the victim, nor did he raise an alarm or inform the college authorities or dial 100 to inform the police,' said an official.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) which had taken suo moto cognizance of the case and had sought an action-taken-report from Kolkata's police commissioner on Friday, wrote a fresh letter to the state chief secretary on Saturday seeking the victim's medical reports within three days and security arrangement for the victim's family.
Meanwhile the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced that it would send a four-member team to Kolkata to probe into the incident which would submit a report to JP Nadda, BJP National President. The BJP also said that it wouldn't demand a CBI probe into the incident.
'I agree that the CBI wasn't successful in its probe into the rape and murder in RG Kar Hospital. . . We don't want a CBI probe. We want the Kolkata Police to probe into this. The policemen get their salary from the tax paid by the citizens. Let the police investigate and bring out the truth,' Agnimitra Paul, BJP legislator, said in a press conference at the BJP party office in Salt Lake.
'@BJP4Bengal MLA @paulagnimitra1 declares that she and her party have NO FAITH in @BJP4India's puppet agency - the CBI. She claims that the @CBIHeadquarters FAILED to ensure justice or do their job properly in the RG Kar incident. Interestingly, she has now placed her trust in @WBPolice and @KolkataPolice for ensuring the safety and security of women. Well Madam, good to see reality finally sinking in!' the TMC wrote on X.

CM orders admin shake-up after stampede

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Sunday ordered a major administrative shake-up following the stampede near Shree Gundicha temple in Puri which claimed three lives and left around 50 people injured. With several crucial Rath Yatra events approaching, the Chief Minister has reassigned experienced IAS and IPS officers to ensure tighter coordination and public safety. In a decisive move, ADG (Police Modernisation) Saumendra Kumar Priyadarshi has been placed in overall charge of police arrangements for the Rath Yatra and related rituals in addition to his existing responsibilities. Further strengthening the top administrative structure, senior bureaucrat Saswata Mishra has been appointed as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, a post lying vacant since Nikunja Bihari Dhal proceeded on Central deputation. Mishra will also continue as Principal Secretary, Finance Department, and Chairman, IDCO. The Chief Minister has also engaged former Puri Collector Arvind Agarwal as the overall in-charge of the Rath Yatra. The administrative action came swiftly after the stampede sparked nationwide outrage. Within hours, Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain and Puri SP Vinit Agarwal were removed from their posts. Additionally, DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi have been suspended from service. DIG STF Pinak Mishra has been appointed as the new Puri SP. Despite his promotion to DIG rank, Mishra has been directed to function as SP during the Yatra, citing the critical nature of the role. Sources confirmed he assumed charge within hours of the transfer order. The Chief Minister appointed Khurda District Collector Chanchal Rana as the new Collector of Puri.

Retired teacher loses ₹64 lakh to cyber frauds

MUMBAI: Yet another retired person fell into the 'digital arrest' trap of cyber criminals and ended up losing ₹ 64 lakh, including his hard-earned retirement funds. The Achole police in Nalasopara East on Saturday registered a case against cyber frauds who cheated a retired teacher, Dinanath Mishra ,58, of Samyukta Nagar, by placing him under 'digital arrest' and producing him in a 'digital' court' - a modus operandi that cyber criminals use to digitally rob people of their savings and funds. (Shutterstock) In this case too, the victim was falsely accused of being involved in a money-laundering case and was informed by gang members masquerading as police and ED officers that he was under 'digital arrest'. The victim was even produced before a 'digital court' set, complete with a 'judge'. All this took place on video calls. The complainant received the first call from the gang on March 7, when a woman, who said she was from TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) notification cell, told him that he has been implicated in an extortion and money laundering case registered at the Tilak Nagar Police Station in Delhi. The next phase of the gang's plan involved telling the victim to pay a huge sum of money, or face jail term. Believing them, the complainant emptied out his savings, borrowed money from relatives, and even sold his wife's jewellery to gather the demanded sum, as he lives on his pension now. He paid ₹ 44 lakh to the gang in the first instalment and ₹ 20 lakh in the second. In this way, between March 7 and March 23, he was cheated out of ₹ 64 lakh, but he kept quiet as the crooks had warned him not to tell anyone about it. Last week, however, when a relative asked him about the money he had borrowed from him, Mishra revealed the entire story to him. After the relative told him that he was duped by cyber criminals, Mishra approached the Achole police. 'Based on the statement of Mishra, we have registered a case against unknown persons under sections 66 (a) and 66 (d) of the IT Act,' said an officer of Achole Police Station.

Kolkata Gang-Rape Case: CCTV Footage, Data Records Match With Victim's Statement, Says Police

Last Updated: Technical evidence supports the victim's statement in the Kolkata gang rape case. Protests erupted citywide. The investigation progresses with more personnel. Kolkata gang rape case of 24-year-old law student has taken a significant turn as technical evidence, including CCTV footage and call data records, has been analysed and found to corroborate the victim's statement. The investigation team is now gearing up to interrogate students to further verify the facts of the incident. According to the police, the vice principal of the institution has confirmed that none of the accused persons had access to the CCTV feeds, which suggests that the footage has not been tampered with. Meanwhile, on Sunday, people from diverse backgrounds united in solidarity, participating in protests against the gang rape of a law college student in Kolkata. Demonstrations took place outside South Calcutta Law College, the alleged crime scene, and Kasba Police Station, where the First Information Report (FIR) was filed. Protests spread to different parts of the city by evening, including Jadavpur, Rashbehari, and Harzra. Supporters of 'Abhaya Mancha" a group created after rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital and Medical College on August 9, 2024, participated in the protests, along with students and the elderly. The investigation into the incident has seen significant progress, with the medico-legal examination and the survivor's statement under Section 183 of BNSS being completed. To expedite the probe, the Kolkata Police has bolstered the Special Investigation Team by increasing its personnel to nine officers. The protests on Sunday brought back memories of the massive protests after the horrific crime at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital last year. 'Yesterday, till midnight, I spoke to the victim's parents. I told them I would come and meet them. They were very tense and wanted cooperation. Today in the morning, when we tried to reach them, they did not pick up the phone. When I asked the police, they said they don't know. When I asked SP Bauruipur, he said their house was under lock and key," she said. 'I visited, and they cooperated, but the pace of occurrence was sealed; they did not allow me to record. They said if we record, they will seize it. How is that possible? I'm going to Delhi and will discuss and give a report. We are disappointed," she added. The police have arrested three people, including the main accused, in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student inside the college campus on Wednesday, June 25. A five-member special team has also been constituted to probe the incident. First Published: June 30, 2025, 07:10 IST
