China announced on Tuesday that it will stage a major military parade on September 3 to mark 80 years since victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
President Xi Jinping will attend the event at Tiananmen Square in Beijing and deliver a speech, a senior military official said at a news conference.
"The Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Central Military Commission have decided to hold a grand military parade at Tiananmen in the capital on September 3 this year," Wu Zeke from China's military commission said.
"Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, President of the State and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, will inspect the troops."
Xinhua news agency said the parade would feature "marching formations, armoured columns and aerial echelons".
Russian President Vladimir Putin will also attend the anniversary commemorations, the Kremlin said last week. (Xinhua/AFP)

21 Hong Kong residents in Israel and Iran seek help, all but 1 depart safely, leader John Lee says
A total of 21 Hong Kong residents in Israel and Iran sought help from the government, with all but one having 'departed safely,' the city's leader has said. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Chief Executive John Lee said 21 Hong Kong residents had contacted the Immigration Department as of Monday. 'Twenty of them have already departed safely,' Lee said, adding that the Immigration Department 'will continue to maintain close contact' with the one remaining resident and 'provide assistance.' The Hong Kong government raised its travel advisory for Israel and Iran to black – signifying a 'severe threat,' the highest of the warnings – on Thursday, nearly a week after Israel launched surprise attacks on Iran in the early morning hours of June 13. China's official state news agency Xinhua reported last week that two Hongkongers were among a group of 119 Chinese nationals who were evacuated from Israel on Thursday. Other countries have evacuated their nationals from Israel and Iran, while some airlines have suspended operations in the Middle East. Lee added that he hoped the 'situation in the Middle East returns to peace and stability as soon as possible.' A reporter asked the chief executive whether the Hong Kong government would maintain its 'cooperation' with Middle Eastern countries amid the conflict. Lee replied in Cantonese, 'No matter how the world changes, trade development must go on. Even more so now, I see the importance and need for cooperation.' Hong Kong has strengthened its ties with the region over the past year, with the city's officials making visits to Middle Eastern countries and signing trade and financial agreements. The US, which struck three nuclear sites in Iran to support its ally Israel, said on Monday night that Tehran and Tel Aviv had reached a ceasefire agreement.

China to mark 80th WWII anniversary with military parade in Beijing in September
China will stage a military parade to commemorate the end of World War II – the second time it has held the event – as conflicts rage around the world, including the latest in Iran. Advertisement It will be held in Beijing's Tiananmen Square on September 3, a decade after it first staged a Victory Day parade. It will follow a ceremony marking 80 years since China defeated Japan and the global victory against fascism, Hu Heping, deputy head of the Communist Party's publicity department, told reporters on Tuesday. The parade, first reported by the Post in February, will be watched closely for possible debuts of advanced new Chinese weapons. The Kremlin confirmed on Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit China from August 31 to September 3 to attend the events, as well as hold talks with Xi on September 2. Advertisement Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is also expected to attend.
