KGKS calls for review of 25km claim policy in Sabah
Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KUDAT: The Sabah State Government Teachers' Union (KGKS) has appealed to the Public Service Department (JPA) and Ministry of Education (KPM) to review the strict enforcement of the 25-kilometre straight-line travel claim limit in the State. KGKS president Murkam Hussien ( pic ) said the measure does not reflect the geographical realities in Sabah, where rugged terrain and limited road access often make actual travel distances far longer. He cited SK Penimbawan in Tuaran as an example, where travel by boat takes 10–15 minutes, but the road route stretches 78km, highlighting the disconnect between policy and practical travel. Murkam said the union had received complaints from members whose salaries were docked or who were ordered to repay allowances in instalments, sometimes amounting to tens of thousands of ringgit. He said affected teachers were shocked to receive deduction notices without prior consultation, with some reportedly forced to take loans or sell their cars to settle repayment demands. The RHA claim process involves district officers verifying the 25km distance before clerks and headmasters approve claims, which Murkam said meant others should also share accountability. KGKS is urging JPA and KPM to conduct on-site engagements in Sabah to explain the policy and prevent further hardship for teachers serving in remote areas. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? State education directors, district education officers ordered to conduct spot checks on schools
Published on: Monday, August 11, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 11, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry (MOE) has ordered all state education directors and district education officers to conduct spot checks on schools to curb bullying in school. Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the officials have to also visit boarding schools at night not only to monitor but to get to know and understand how boarding school students live. Advertisement 'Maybe we need to go down without being told. We go to schools, look at the situation there, we want to see the nature of the school, how things happen. We might visit at night to see dormitories,' he told reporters after the MADANI Teachers Appreciation Event officiated by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. He added that school principals and headmasters were instructed by the ministry to lead chants of 'Kami Benci Buli' (We Hate Bullying) before and after each school session to instill a sense of abhorrence for bullying in the hearts and minds of students and pupils. He also revealed that the ministry would improve security features in schools, especially boarding schools, to curb bullying incidents such as adding the number of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and the number of dormitory wardens. He urged all parties, including teachers, Parent-Teacher Associations and local communities to play their roles in ensuring the safety of students in dormitories, especially at night. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Monday, August 11, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 11, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Pic by Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has reiterated that it will not compromise on any matter related to bullying in schools. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh ( pic ) said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. Advertisement 'The ministry will not compromise on any matter related to bullying. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. Advertisement He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. They were later sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) for a post-mortem scheduled the following morning. - Malay Mail * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sarawak to establish State Energy Council by 2026: Abang Jo
Published on: Monday, August 11, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 11, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: KUCHING: Sarawak will establish a State Energy Council by next year to coordinate and align energy sector policies across public and private stakeholders, Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg ( pic ) said today. He said the council will be formed after consultations with all relevant parties and will oversee the operations and strategies of energy sector players to ensure alignment with the state's development goals. Advertisement 'This is part of our broader effort under the Sarawak Energy Transition Policy (SET-P). We're engaging with the private sector so both public and private entities move forward together,' he told reporters after launching SET-P here. Abang Johari said Sarawak is targeting RM700 billion in investments over the next decade through the policy, which aims to drive low-carbon, sustainable economic growth anchored on renewable energy. 'We are fortunate to have the capacity to generate renewable energy and are already seeing strong global interest, especially in our hydroelectric power potential,' he said. He added that the incoming investments are expected to create high-quality jobs, and the state is preparing for this by offering free tertiary education to build a skilled workforce for the emerging green economy. Advertisement SET-P outlines a strategic roadmap to transform Sarawak's energy landscape and is anchored on seven key pillars namely, renewable energy, natural gas, energy efficiency, low-carbon mobility, clean hydrogen, carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), as well as alternative energy. The policy also aims to address the energy trilemma of ensuring security, affordability and sustainability, while promoting a resilient and inclusive energy future for Sarawak. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
