KGKS calls for review of 25km claim policy in Sabah
Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 Text Size: KUDAT: The Sabah State Government Teachers' Union (KGKS) has appealed to the Public Service Department (JPA) and Ministry of Education (KPM) to review the strict enforcement of the 25-kilometre straight-line travel claim limit in the State. KGKS president Murkam Hussien ( pic ) said the measure does not reflect the geographical realities in Sabah, where rugged terrain and limited road access often make actual travel distances far longer. He cited SK Penimbawan in Tuaran as an example, where travel by boat takes 10–15 minutes, but the road route stretches 78km, highlighting the disconnect between policy and practical travel. Murkam said the union had received complaints from members whose salaries were docked or who were ordered to repay allowances in instalments, sometimes amounting to tens of thousands of ringgit. He said affected teachers were shocked to receive deduction notices without prior consultation, with some reportedly forced to take loans or sell their cars to settle repayment demands. The RHA claim process involves district officers verifying the 25km distance before clerks and headmasters approve claims, which Murkam said meant others should also share accountability. KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry (MOE) has ordered all state education directors and district education officers to conduct spot checks on schools to curb bullying in school. Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad said the officials have to also visit boarding schools at night not only to monitor but to get to know and understand how boarding school students live. We might visit at night to see dormitories,' he told reporters after the MADANI Teachers Appreciation Event officiated by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. He added that school principals and headmasters were instructed by the ministry to lead chants of 'Kami Benci Buli' (We Hate Bullying) before and after each school session to instill a sense of abhorrence for bullying in the hearts and minds of students and pupils. He also revealed that the ministry would improve security features in schools, especially boarding schools, to curb bullying incidents such as adding the number of closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras and the number of dormitory wardens. Education Ministry denies shielding anyone in bullying cases

Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh ( pic ) said the ministry has never sought to shield any party involved in such incidents, contrary to certain allegations. Secondly, MOE will not and has never attempted to protect anyone involved, as alleged,' he told the Dewan Rakyat today. He was responding to a supplementary question from Semporna MP Tan Sri Shafie Apdal, who referred to the ongoing bullying case involving Zara Qairina and asked what measures were being taken to protect students and ensure justice. Shafie also stressed that law enforcement must not protect any party involved, regardless of their identity. Wong said the ministry has always been ready to cooperate fully with police in assisting investigations at all levels. Advertisement He added that the ministry has established guidelines and circulars (SPI) to address disciplinary issues and bullying in schools, which are enforced and updated periodically to strengthen preventive measures. Zara, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up. The exhumation of her remains at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, was completed at 7.15pm on Saturday. Sarawak to establish State Energy Council by 2026: Abang Jo

He said the council will be formed after consultations with all relevant parties and will oversee the operations and strategies of energy sector players to ensure alignment with the state's development goals.
