Farmer who sprayed manure on hundreds of squatting campers speaks out
A furious farmer who showered hundreds of campers with smelly fertiliser after they set up on his field in France has defended his actions.
Fifth-generation dairy farmer Pierre Richard says he was forced to spray liquid manure on the campers after police allegedly refused to take action to clear the illegal settlement.
Up to 250 caravans, thought to be from the traveller community heading to a religious festival, arrived on a field near the village of Le Syndicat in the Vosges region in northeastern France owned by Pierre and his family, reportedly without permission.
The farmer, 37, claimed that the people had refused to set up at an empty travellers site nearby and instead had 'broken through the barriers and set up camp, hundreds of them.'
He told the Daily Mail: 'They preferred to stay here on my land. It's a beautiful place, in the mountains, next to a river, and with fresh green grass.
'They arrived at about 8pm on a Sunday night. When I heard they were there I went down there, but it was too late.
'They had broken through the barriers and set up camp, hundreds of them.
'The following day I went to the police, but they said there was nothing they could do.'
Two days after the campers broke entry, Pierre decided to take matters into his own hands and spray the area 'to make sure no more of them would come.'
It is not known whether the man tried to speak to any of the squatters before the clash on July 8.
Dramatic footage shows the moment Pierre and his team approach the campsite, with Pierre insisting they stayed 'a minimum of 10 metres from the caravans.'
He said the campers 'chased us and attacked us in our cabs,' claiming that they broke one of his wing mirrors during the clash.
In France, communities with more than 5,000 residents must provide a traveller site, and there was a dedicated site in the area.
However, the squatters insisted that the nearby site was too small for their 250-caravan convoy, according to local reports.
Frustrated Pierre added: 'They preferred to stay here on my land. It's a beautiful place, in the mountains, next to a river, and with fresh green grass.'
He defended his actions, saying if they hadn't sprayed the field, more caravans might have turned up, putting the grass he uses to feed cattle at risk.
'Not only do they ruin the grass, they ruin the land and the river,' he said.
'Their cars and caravans flatten the earth and make it harder for the grass to grow.' More Trending
He said he now fears retaliation from the group.
Pascal Claude, the mayor of Syndicat, commented on the clash: 'They had no right to set up camp there, but they forced the barrier at the entrance of the land. The farmers and I are totally against this.
'Not only did they set up camp on a protected natural land, it is also a protected water source.'
A representative for the campers told a court when an eviction order was being discussed that the group had asked the council to provide a site for them, but their request was ignored.

Acid attacker who blinded dad brags about his crimes in rap videos from prison
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video A dad who was blinded in one eye by an acid attacker has called it a 'disgrace' that the convict is rapping about his crimes on TikTok. Paul Laskey, 43, was squirted in the face with what was believed to be battery acid after his 16-year-old son was mugged at knifepoint. Robbie Scott, 22, was jailed for the attack but has begun posting music videos from behind bars glorifying violence. The TikTok clips are posted under 'HMP hardest rapper Robdog' and are geographically tagged to 'HMP Manchester (Strangeways)'. In one soundbite, Scott raps: 'I used to roll on the streets with a kitchen knife, would not think twice about dipping guys.' In video he can be seen chanting: 'Robdog jailhouse settings, you know how we do, Geordie boys on coke, oh yes.' Scott violent attack unfolded after he used a zombie knife to steal an £1,000 gold chain from Laskey's son in Newcastle on February 5 2023. The dad went to apprehend Scott when he was squirted in the face with a corrosive acid, causing his left eye to 'melt' away. Reacting to the rap videos, Laskey told Metro: 'It's a disgrace he is able to brag about things he does and has no remorse whatsoever.' The plumber and heating engineer previously recalled how the acid burned his face and destroyed his vision in one eye. He said: 'I couldn't see and couldn't breathe. It took my breathe away with how strong it was. I felt burning on my face. 'It was horrendous. I was off work for the first six months. It was all that was on my mind. It was just awful.' Scott was sent to prison for eight years and six months in May last year after admitting GBH with intent, robbery, having a knife and a corrosive substance in public and resisting arrest. However his sentence was raised to 11 years after it was judged to be unduly lenient. Asked about what Scott's rap videos said about the criminal, Laskey said: 'It just shows the sort of person he is, and when his sentence is over he will probably do it again.' Ministry of Justice has reportedly asked TikTok to take down the videos, according to the Sun. More Trending The Prison Service said: 'Any offender caught using a phone or social media in prison will face punishment, including extra time behind bars.' Metro previously reported how Laskey's eye was saved by a donated placenta. Over the course of a year he received two cornea transplants from donated eyes, as well as 'essential' treatment from a donated placenta. Doctor's used an amnion graft, from the placenta, to help heal surface damage and cover nerve endings. Woman 'threatened with rape and dragged to basement by police' in Serbia protest
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video After almost a year of relatively peaceful demonstrations, Serbia nears a state of war. Protests by students, teachers, workers and government opposition began last December after 16 people were killed on November 1 when the canopy of the main railway station in Novi Sad collapsed on them. The tragedy was viewed as a consequence of deep-rooted corruption and institutional failure in the Balkan nation, leading to calls for early elections. Since then, the persistent dissent has escalated into the most severe crisis since the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and Aleksandar Vučić came into power. As pressure mounts, Vučić – an authoritarian leader famous in the Balkans for his ties to Vladimir Putin – unleashed his loyalists and riot police on the streets to clash with the protesters. As many as 100 people have been detained over the past week, with many sharing their experiences of abuse of power. Nikolina Sindjelic, a student activist, told AFP she was threatened with rape while in custody. She accused Marko Krichak, the commander of the Unit for the Security of Certain Persons and Facilities (JZO), of sexually and physically abusing her. Sindjelic recalled being dragged along with another student and several other protesters into a government garage in central Belgrade by officers in a special police unit on Thursday night. The 22-year-old said: 'The commander of the unit brutally beat both him and me. 'He called us offensive names, told me I was a w***e and that he would rape me there in front of everyone, that I would regret trying to overthrow the state.' Her story was confirmed by several students who were also detained at the same time. The Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs 'strongly denied' the allegations. It said the student was arrested for being part of a group that had attacked government buildings and police. A statement said: 'Throughout the entire procedure, no means of coercion, handcuffing, insults, or any form of mistreatment were applied.' Sindjelic, who was released with a misdemeanour charge, said she intends to sue over her alleged abuse. Hundreds gathered in front of the accused commander's police building in Belgrade on Tuesday in support of the woman. Protesters carried banners reading, 'Rapists with badges' and 'The system beats us, we defend ourselves'. Andrej Sevo, a 31-year-old protester, said: 'We are now entering a spiral of violence, and I do not see how it can end well if things continue in this way. 'They must decide how to act and calm the situation, rather than simply pouring fuel on the fire by sending in the police, with ever more brutal behaviour.' Aleksandra Krstic, 45, also at the rally, stressed that women are especially vulnerable to police abuse. The political science professor said: 'We have no one to protect us. 'If I go to a protest, I should be able to turn to the police… not be beaten, dragged into some basement of a government building, threatened with rape, and forced to beg them to stop.' Rallies have been held in Belgrade, Valjevo, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Prijepolje, Niš, Kragujevac, and other, smaller places across the country, with people gathering in large numbers. On Monday night, Vučić's SNS office in Valjevo had its windows smashed by a passing crowd. Within an hour, the leader stood in front of the shattered glass, flanked by pro-government media and security, to denounce the demonstrators as 'terrorists' – a familiar refrain for him. The 55-year-old warned that 'soon, the citizens will be freed from this terror and evil.' In Valjevo, thousands of people clashed with riot police, pelting them with rocks and glass bottles. More Trending Officers then unleashed multiple rounds of tear gas, striking people with their batons and hurling them to the ground. Similar clashes also took place in Belgrade and the northern city of Novi Sad. In response, Russia's Foreign Ministry has offered its support to the pro-Kremlin, right-wing president. It said in a statement that 'we cannot remain unresponsive to what is happening in brotherly Serbia'.
