Bundesliga playoff: Heidenheim and Elversberg draw 2-2 in first leg
Two overachieving clubs clashed for a place in the Bundesliga and neither could strike a decisive blow.
Top-tier Heidenheim and second-division Elversberg drew 2-2 in the first leg of their relegation/promotion playoff on Thursday, leaving the contest finely poised before the second leg in Elversberg on Monday.
'Everything open,' Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt said.
Heidenheim, which was only promoted to the top division in 2023 after an unlikely ascent through the lower leagues, finished third from bottom in the Bundesliga this season when it also had to contend with European competition after its eighth-place finish last year.
Elversberg, which was still playing at fourth-tier level three years ago, finished third in the second division to earn its shot in the playoff.
It was a duel between modest clubs with the longest-serving coaches in German professional soccer. Schmidt took over in Heidenheim on Sept. 17, 2007, while his Elversberg counterpart Horst Steffen took charge on October 29, 2018.

Steffen led the team from the fourth-tier regional league, clinching promotion to the third division in 2022, then to the second as third-division champion a year later, before earning the shot at Bundesliga promotion this year.
Heidenheim made the better start and missed good chances before Lukas Petkov struck for the visitors in the 18th minute, and Fisnik Asllani finished off a well-worked team move to make it 2-0 in the 42nd.
Omar Haktab Traoré thought he'd pulled one back for Heidenheim before the break, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR check found an offside player involved in the buildup.
Schmidt reacted with three changes at the interval.
Tim Siersleben pulled a goal back on a rebound in the 62nd, and Mathias Honsak equalized three minutes later.
The home team finished strongly as the visitors tired, but neither team could claim an advantage before the second leg in Elversberg.

Could Anton Frondell fall to Philadelphia Flyers in 2025 NHL Draft?
As the 2025 NHL Draft approaches, the Philadelphia Flyers may find themselves staring at a golden opportunity: the chance to draft Anton Frondell, the top-rated European skater in this year's class. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Anton Frondell is widely projected to go within the No. 3 to No. 7 range, which could put him squarely in Philadelphia's sights depending on how the lottery shakes out. Why scouts are high on Anton Frondell Despite modest stats this season—11 goals and 14 assists in Sweden's second-tier men's league—Anton Frondell has garnered strong comparisons to players like Aleksander Barkov for his 200-foot game and hockey IQ. 'His strength lies in his ability to combine his strong awareness, drive and hockey IQ with his 200-foot game. Overall, he possesses great composure and poise at such a young age, much like Leo Carlsson in his draft year,' according to the Hockey Writers. Breaking down DRAFT PROSPECT Anton Frondell with Alex Appleyard; Flyers hire assistant coaches Anton Frondell, who only recently turned 18 in May, was also playing through nagging injuries for most of the season — a factor that could explain a statistical dip from his 39-point performance (18G, 21A) with Djurgårdens' junior squad last year. "He has a quick, accurate shot and can create his own scoring opportunities. His puckhandling is excellent, allowing him to maintain possession and navigate through defenders. He shows creativity and has a knack for making smart plays under pressure, whether that be with slick passes or taking quality shots on net. Frondell displays a high hockey IQ, often making quick decisions that positively impact his team's play. He reads the game well, anticipating plays and positioning himself effectively. This intelligence contributes to both offensive and defensive phases of play,' added. FC Hockey's Jocke Andersson What makes Frondell especially intriguing for the Flyers is his potential as a defensively responsible, playmaking center—a glaring need for Philadelphia as they continue to retool under GM Daniel Briere. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While no one is calling him the next Barkov just yet, the similarities in style—high IQ, two-way reliability, ability to drive transition—are hard to ignore. Frondell could eventually fill a second-line center role, with upside to grow into a top-line player if his offensive ceiling hits. And just imagine him centering a line with Matvei Michkov in the years to come—a potential pairing of skill, smarts, and scoring touch that could become a staple of the Flyers' top six. Will Anton Frondell fall to the Flyers' draft slot? The big question is whether Frondell will still be on the board when the Flyers pick. Ranked by many scouting services in the top 5–7 range, he could very well be gone by the time Philadelphia makes its selection—but if a run on defensemen or North American forwards happens early, there's a real chance he slips. Also read: For a Flyers team that's looking to build a sustainable winner and already has one of the league's top prospects in Michkov, Frondell could be the perfect fit down the middle—a cerebral, steady, and skilled pivot who could anchor their lineup for years.

Gautam Gambhir pushes for Australia tour-like prep, demands secretive intra-squad match before England Tests
India will play just one practice game before the start of the five-match contest against England, much like they had prepared for the tour of Australia. And head coach Gautam Gambhir has demanded secrecy, just like they had in Perth last November. However, unlike the previous overseas tour, it won't be a mere match simulation but a full-fledged four-day intra-squad warm-up game against India A, in Beckenham, Kent, starting Friday. India did schedule a similar before the tour of Australia, but the match was shelved at the last minute as the management opted for match simulation to gear up for the series. Moreover, the officials at the WACA, where the Indian team were stationed before the start of the series in Perth, were given strict instructions by the BCCI that the practice game would be played behind closed doors, implying fans would not be able to watch it. In fact, India's entire training at the old Perth venue was under wraps in a bid to not give away any secrets to the opposition. Gambhir has pushed for the same this time. In a report in the PTI, the former India batter has called for a "closed-door" intra-squad game, "to prevent the opposition from getting any ideas on the tactical front, emulating a long-established practice among European football clubs." The 360-overs of match practice will not only give the team management a chance to allow the bowling unit to get enough overs under their belt, it will also hint towards the possible batting line-up, around which there has been considerable debate following the Test retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Focus will also be on Jasprit Bumrah, who will play a red-ball game after six months. He will also get a chance to bowl multiple spells and test his fitness, having only played IPL since his comeback from a lower back stress injury.

FIFPro Releases Report Slamming FIFA Over Congested Schedule; Demands Changes For Player Well-Being
Last Updated: FIFPro's report called for match limits, mid-season breaks, and mandatory summer holidays to protect footballers from excessive workload and calendar congestion. Enough is enough. Footballers, just like other athletes, deserve rest too. Professional football must introduce match limits, mid-season breaks, and compulsory summer holidays to protect players, a report commissioned by FIFPro stated on Thursday. FIFPro is the global players' union while European Leagues brings together more than one thousand clubs from 33 countries around Europe. Its member leagues include the English Premier League, as well as the leagues in Italy, Germany and France, but not La Liga, which joined the complaint separately. Citing recent European court rulings related to the breakaway Super League and the Lassana Diarra case, the FIFPro ealier last year had said FIFA's rules and conduct 'harm the economic interests of national leagues, and the health and safety of players in European football". 'A legal challenge before the European Commission has become a necessary course of action to safeguard the European football sector," they added. FIFA has been accused of a failure to consult over recent changes to the calendar, such as the introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup, which has drawn much criticism regarding player well-being. To substantiate their earlier grievances, FIFPro now announced that a study on 'calendar congestion and excessive workload" by 70 specialists working in professional men's football for clubs and national teams recommended safety standards, which, according to the report, international football currently lacks. The report made 12 recommendations and highlighted several in a press release. These included mandatory four-week off-season breaks, with two of those weeks being commitment-free, and compulsory mid-season breaks. It also advocated for a minimum four-week retraining period after off-season breaks before players return to competition. On top of it all, in order to manage travel fatigue, the report mentioned that governing bodies should ensure rest periods after long-haul flights. It was also noted that specific workload safeguards should be introduced for players under 21, while urging 'seasonal match limits and fixture congestion controls" across all levels of football. FIFPro has led criticism of the lucrative 32-team tournament, which has been crammed into an already overloaded schedule. The FIFA Club World Cup is set to take place from June 14.
