David de Gea in transfer tug-of-war ahead of the summer

Yahoo27-05-2025

Former Spain international David de Gea is at the heart of something of a tug-of-war between two prominent clubs ahead of the summer.
That's according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, who points towards Fiorentina and AS Monaco as the sides in question.

Goalkeeper De Gea, for his part, is fresh off something of a comeback season in Italy in 2024/25.
After a year away from the game following his departure from Premier League giants Manchester United, the 34-year-old was afforded the chance to prove himself by the aforementioned Fiorentina.
And to say that De Gea went on to manage as much would be something of an understatement.
Across the campaign in Florence, the talented shot-stopper racked up 42 appearances, showcasing flashes of his very best to light up Italian football.
And such exploits, it would appear, have not gone at all unnoticed across the continent.

As per a report from the aforementioned Fabrizio Romano:
'AS Monaco have David De Gea on their shortlist as new goalkeeper, one of their desired targets.'
It is also noted, though, that 'Fiorentina are in talks to keep De Gea and extend his contract until June 2028 as a priority.'

More changes at Man United as Dave Brailsford scales back role with the troubled club

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United's soccer operations are undergoing yet more change with one of its key figures Dave Brailsford scaling back his role with the troubled club, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information has not been made public. Brailsford, who was credited for his role in British cycling's spectacular Olympic success in recent years, was a key component of billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's United overhaul following his minority investment in the club last year. But things haven't gone to plan, with the 20-time English champion suffering its lowest finish in the Premier League era last season — 15th — and recording its lowest points total and highest number of losses. Brailsford, who is also sporting director for Ratcliffe's petrochemicals firm INEOS, will remain in that role and also as a United director. However his day-to-day involvement will be reduced, the person said. It is the latest in a slew of changes at United over the past year since Ratcliffe paid $1.3 billion for an initial 25% stake in United, assumed control of its soccer operations from majority owners the Glazer family and vowed to bring the good times back. In that time there have been high-profile hirings and firings, as well new lows on the field and job cuts. Former manager Erik ten Hag went in October — just three months after being handed a one-year contract extension. Director of football Dan Ashworth left the club less than six months into the job and following lengthy negotiations to pry him away from Newcastle. Omar Berrada was lured from Manchester City to become CEO and Jason Wilcox, formerly director of City's academy, became technical director. They remain in position as two key members of the leadership team above coach Ruben Amorim. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Manchester United make first bid worth up to £55m for Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo

Manchester United have submitted an opening offer to sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford. The proposal values Mbeumo at £45million plus £10m in add-ons, which is some way below the kind of fee it would take for Brentford to consider selling their Cameroon international forward. But talks are ongoing as United work to reach an agreement for a player targeted by head coach Ruben Amorim to strengthen his attacking unit. Advertisement Mbeumo, 25, has a year left on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium — plus an option to extend by 12 months — but is keen on moving to Old Trafford if the clubs can strike a compromise. The Athletic previously reported that the 25-year-old wanted to join United and that the Old Trafford club were set to open talks with Brentford as they pursue an agreement to sign the forward this summer. He enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2024-25, scoring 20 goals and adding eight assists as Brentford finished 10th. Thomas Frank has been open that the club would be open to selling Mbeumo, but only if their valuation is met. 'If the right price — and that's going to be expensive — is coming, then I'm sure the club will be open to it,' Frank told Sky Sports last month. A versatile attacking player, Mbeumo is comfortable playing both out wide or through the middle. He has made 242 appearances for Brentford since joining from French side Troyes in 2019. He has scored 70 goals and provided 51 assists in that time. He also has been capped 18 times by Cameroon and he has scored four goals. Manchester United are in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer after registering just 44 league goals last term, second-worst outside of teams who were relegated. Matheus Cunha will arrive from Wolverhampton Wanderers while they held a strong interest in Ipswich Town's Liam Delap, before he ultimately opted to join Chelsea. ()

Liverpool star's partner pens EMOTIONAL letter to fans after Fabrizio Romano confirms he can leave

Liverpool are planning attacking upgrades in the summer transfer window. Negotiations are underway for Florian Wirtz with the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker likely to command a British record transfer fee. We could see big changes up top - with Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez earmarked for the exit. And on the wings, Luis Diaz, Federico Chiesa and Ben Doak could all leave the club. Advertisement Diaz, 28, filled in at No9 for Arne Slot last season, scoring 13 goals and helping to clinch the Premier League title. Despite his best Liverpool campaign to date however the Colombia international is by no means assured of his future at the club. Al-Nassr are going to make a strong effort to sign the former Porto star, whose contract expires in 2027 and with no hint of a renewal on the horizon. Is Luis Diaz off? If Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot don't come to an agreement with Diaz soon then they could sacrifice the left winger instead of losing him for next to nothing in 2026. Advertisement Barcelona are also thought to be among the runners and riders for Diaz, although the Catalans will have trouble meeting Liverpool's reported €80m asking price and wages which could reach €150k per week. Whatever happens, there has been a big hint dropped in recent days that Diaz's Liverpool career has reached an end. His partner Gera Ponce posted an emotional letter to Liverpool supporters on social media - which could suggest that Diaz is off. 'Thank you for so much love' 'To the incredible Liverpool fans,' she wrote on Instagram. 'From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club. We knew the slogan was 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support us every moment and show such unconditional love... confirmed to us that here you never walk alone. This fan doesn't just support, it feels. Advertisement 'And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls. Thank you for so much love, for so much dedication and for making us feel at home. 'Being part of this fan is a privilege. There's no doubt: they're the best in the world. This is a real bond, deep and strong, that reaffirms that we'll never walk alone.' © IMAGO Romano: 'Diaz can leave' Fabrizio Romano confirmed Al-Nassr's interest earlier this week, stating that the Saudi giants 'love' the wide man. "Luis Diaz is a top target for Al-Nassr," Romano said on YouTube. "He's a player they love, a player they want, and they feel he can leave Liverpool. Advertisement "So Al-Nassr will be there for Luis Diaz. They really want the player." The writing would appear to be on the wall for Diaz, who joined the club for £37.5m back in January 2022.
