Homelessness figures hit record of 15,915 people in emergency accommodation

THE NUMBER OF people in the State officially recognised as homeless stands at 15,915 according to the latest figures.
A total of
15,747 people were living in emergency accommodation in May,
meaning there has been an increase of 168 recorded as homeless.
Today's overall figure includes 4,958 children – an increase of 114 on last month's figures.
The statistics do not include people rough sleeping, refugees, asylum seekers, individuals in domestic violence shelters, or those experiencing 'hidden homelessness', such as sleeping in cars, on couches, or other unsuitable living conditions.
The figures are taken from the week of 23-29 in June.
Of the adults accessing emergency accommodation, 7,755 were in Co Dublin.
Some 660 adults were in Cork, 510 were in Limerick, and 238 were in Galway.
Meanwhile, there were 3,666 children living in emergency accommodation in Dublin.
Nationwide, 2,320 families are in emergency accommodation.
'Shameful milestone'
Social Democrats housing spokesperson Rory Hearne described today's figures as a 'shameful milestone' and he said it shows how the 'government continues to deprioritise homelessness'.

'This is what happens when you do not protect vulnerable renters, or prevent them from becoming homeless,' said Hearne.
'These numbers are real families and real children experiencing serious trauma day in and day out – their plight cannot be ignored any longer.'
Meanwhile, Sinn Féin's housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin remarked that the 'government failure is normalising homelessness'.
'There has been no emergency response to the ever-deepening homelessness crisis. Instead, there is just empty words and cruel inaction,' he added.
Ó Broin called for an 'emergency ban on evictions' and an 'emergency supply of social homes to get people out of homeless accommodation'.
Elsewhere, the Simon Communities Of Ireland noted a 'concerning trends is the sharp rise in homelessness among older people'.
Some 249 adults over the age of 65 are in emergency accommodation – this is a 104% increase when compared to 2020, when 122 people in the age cohort were homeless.
Ber Grogan, Executive Director of the Simon Communities of Ireland, said 'more older people are now left without an affordable, appropriate, secure place to call home'.
He also noted the increase in 'children being forced to experience the trauma of homelessness over the last number of years'.
'These are two of the most vulnerable groups in society,' said Grogan.
'The Government must show they care,' he added. 'This crisis demands an age-appropriate, compassionate response.'

Government Needs to Invest in Irish Wool Industry Td
The government has been urged to invest in the Irish wool industry, particularly scouring and processing. Sinn Féin spokesperson on agriculture, Martin Kenny has said that sheep farmers are busy at present shearing, which needs to be done for the welfare of the sheep. Despite wool being a natural product that has many uses such as clothing, insulation and fertiliser, the price farmers are currently receiving is at "rock bottom", he said. "It costs more for the farmer to shear the ewe than they get for the fleece. There are many farmers with sheds full of wool for three and four years that they are unable to get sold," the deputy said. "I am told that some are having to pay to get rid of it." He said the development of a wool industry in Ireland needs to be state-led, "as we cannot wait for private industry to establish it". "The government needs to invest in the establishment of a large-scale wool scouring and processing plant," the deputy said. 'There is an industry for wool products in the country and there is a market for Irish wool products. "However, there are many wool garments sold in Ireland that are made from imported wool such as Merino wool.'Some Irish wool may not be suitable for clothing, but it still has a use in textiles such as carpets and rugs and for insulation." There is an opportunity for an Irish wool industry that would provide another source of income to farmers and create more jobs in wool processing, the deputy added, and government "needs to step up to the plate here and invest". The programme for government committed to examining the feasibility of a wool scouring plant in Ireland. According to Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, two research projects are currently underway to assess sustainable approaches to wool scouring in Ireland. "In 2024, my department announced funding of €574,683 for the Spring Wool research project," the minister said in response to a recent parliamentary question. "Among other things, this project is examining the feasibility of a mobile wool scouring unit that is compliant with wastewater regulations. "The treatment of wastewater from the scouring process is a major obstacle to the growth of the wool sector. The work is being coordinated by the Munster Technological University." The second research project, Regenerative Value Systems for Irish Grown Wool in Ireland, is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency. "This project is examining the economics of wool production within a circular bioeconomy," the minister explained. "Key objectives are to investigate various business models for scalable scouring and to assess the potential for local scouring across the island of Ireland." He said his department will examine the outcome of both research projects, "which will help inform government of the feasibility of establishing a scouring plant in Ireland".

Labour Party confirms support for Catherine Connolly's presidential campaign
A meeting of Labour's parliamentary party and executive board was held on Thursday evening where it was agreed it would support the Galway West TD's Áras campaign. The party joins the Social Democrats, People Before Profit and a number of Independents in supporting Ms Connolly's run. The meeting was told of a consultation process held with party members and a clear majority were in favour of supporting her. Ms Connolly is a former member of the Labour Party but has been an Independent since 2006. Labour TD for Dublin South West, Ciarán Ahern, has been chosen as the party coordinator with Ms Connolly's campaign. Mr Ahern said the decision to support Deputy Connolly (68) is 'in the spirit of supporting the development and growth of the Left across the country and demonstrating that an alternative politics is possible here, a cause which our party leader Ivana Bacik has led and promoted over recent years'. 'While there are issues where we have differed with Deputy Connolly, we are determined that the social democratic values of equality, justice and tolerance should shape the Presidency over the next seven years and follow the legacy of Michael D Higgins,' Mr Ahern said in a statement. 'We believe that Catherine Connolly shares those values, and has put them into practice during her political career. 'Catherine will make an excellent President, campaigning and advocating for the common good.' Ms Connolly has drawn support as a Left unity candidate since launching her campaign this month. She worked as a barrister and clinical psychologist before being elected to Galway City Council 17 years ago. Former MEP, Mairéad McGuinness, has been chosen as Fine Gael's candidate for the presidential election, while Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin have yet to throw their support behind a candidate. Last week, a court heard Riverdance star Micheal Flatley is planning to move back to Ireland to seek a nomination to run for the presidency. MMA fighter Conor McGregor has expressed an interest in running for the office, however he is seen as unlikely to secure the necessary support from 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities to get on the ballot.

Catherine Connolly 'ready' for the presidency 'as part of a movement'
Catherine Connolly says that she is 'ready' to be President of Ireland as 'part of a movement'. The Independent Galway West TD announced in mid-July that she would enter the race with the backing of the Social Democrats and People Before Profit. At an online campaign launch rally on Thursday, Ms Connolly said: 'The movement that we're building stands for decency, for democracy, for courage and compassion, but it also stands for indignation, outrage, and anger. 'They're the right feelings to have when we're normalising something that's absolutely abnormal — man-made famine in Gaza, in the Sudan, which is barely spoken about, and an ongoing war after the illegal invasion by Russia of Ukraine. 'We need to use our voices, all our voices, and I look on myself as reflecting your values, that we need to stand up and use our voice for peace in the world to make what is in the Constitution a reality, looking for peaceful solutions to war.' Ms Connolly said that she believed the role of the president could 'reflect the values that we hold dear and to celebrate this beautiful country in all its diversity' and thanked Irish people for advocating on behalf of Gaza. She said that she had been a clinical psychologist, barrister, city councillor, TD, and leas ceann comhairle as well as a mother 'With all of that experience and with your help and with your solidarity, I am ready for the role of president of this country,' she said. Ms Connolly said that she was 'proud to be part of a movement with you for a better country, a country that puts the common good before it'. Bernadette Devlin McAliskey's endorsement Endorsing Ms Connolly, longtime campaigner Bernadette Devlin McAliskey said that Ms Connolly was 'not seduced' by power and would lead 'with integrity, but with a gentleness'. 'Catherine Connolly epitomises all that we wish to be,' said Ms Devlin McAliskey. Writer Fintan Drury told the 700-strong online audience that Ms Connolly 'represents an Ireland that remains generous' and 'is a leader who can help time come good'. Ms Connolly worked as a barrister and a clinical psychologist before becoming a councillor for 17 years and spending a term as Galway mayor until 2005. She resigned from the Labour Party in 2006 after being turned down to be a running mate of then incumbent TD Michael D Higgins. She was first elected to the Dáil as an Independent candidate for Galway West in 2016.
